Your Help Is Needed

  • All members need to help with tasks to keep the club property in good condition and keep the club running well. Below are some tasks that committee chairs have identified that they currently need help with. You can also contact any of the committee heads to find out about additional needs.

Boats Committee

Working-status summary:
- The Chick Magnet is on the South dock, fueled and fully operable.  Users must provide a horn/whistle; check for PFDs in the bow compartment.
- The Boston Whaler is on the South dock, fueled and fully operable.  Users must provide a horn/whistle; check for PFDs in the bow and console compartments.
- The RC boat is in slip #9, fueled and fully operable.
- Except during Jr. Sailing weekends, CLSC1, CLSC2, and CLSC3 are available for general use.  Users must provide a horn/whistle and PFD(s).
- The SeaDoo is fueled and operable (this is the Jr. Sailing Instructor's boat, and is not for general club or membership use - though the maintenance crew gets to ride it during tests (hint, hint)).
- The Sea Snark broke apart in high winds; its remains will be trashed.
- No boats can be launched without an official Mussel inspection - 1000 dollar fine otherwise (absent a county inspector, the marina has inspectors (for work boats only - personal boats must see a county inspector)).

Tasks (please coordinate with Brent at bbclsc@gmail.com):

  • Sunfish: Replace CLSC3's halyard.
  • Sunfish: Restore the CL numbers on CLSC2.
  • Sunfish: CLSC2 is significantly overweight due to water-logged foam.  Open/add ventilation and cover the deck with black plastic (we can use BW's temporary tarp from last winter) to cook it out.
  • Sunfish: Since the Sunfish don't drain but instead collect and hold water when stored top-side up in their slings on the CD, devise a way to store them either sideways or bottom-side up.
  • Sunfish: CLSC1 has a loose halyard cleat.
  • Sunfish: CLSC3's hull, mast, centerboard, rudder, and sail need to be marked 'CLSC3'.
  • Sunfish: One of the mainsheets is fraying; trim and burn.  One of the mainsheets lacks a snaphook on the traveler end.
  • Chick Magnet: Inspect the bilge pump float switch for proper operation and clean or replace if necessary.
  • Chick Magnet: Build a PVC rib-cage (like is now on the Boston Whaler) to hold up a tarp (so that it can remain in service year round, the snow and ice must be kept out).
  • SeaDoo: Remove, clean, and inspect the inflatable tubes (find any leaks while washing).  This is the first step in refurbishing the tubes; once clean the next steps are to seal any pin-holes, and, replace the existing exterior patches.
  • SeaDoo: Remove all traces of the old blue poly tarp and wash the deck.
  • SeaDoo: Some sort of protector is needed to keep the canvas tarp from tearing where it tugs against the handle bars - a wad of towels or rags would do for now, but a custom wood and carpet contraption (for example) would be easier to use long-term.
  • SeaDoo: If an OEM sticker can't be obtained, (professionally) label the controls and switches.
  • SeaDoo: Determine just what the oil injector is actually doing - intermitent? balanced between cyclinders? low or high volume?  Is it in any way non-functional?
  • SeaDoo: Using a tach, fine adjust the low-speed mixture, then set the idle to spec.
  • SeaDoo: Review the shop and owner's manuals' maintenance schedules, and prioritize a working list (e.g., water pump oil).
  • SeaDoo: Grease PTO flywheel and seal carrier (overdue).
  • Boston Whaler: See if any of the console gauges can be made to work.
  • Boston Whaler: Exactly what would the BW need to serve as the RC boat in a pinch?
  • RC: Replace air-horn and air tubing (UV resistant, if possible).  Replace microphone hanger.
  • RC: Clean and store the winter cover.
  • RC: Add a filter to the 12V supply for the VHF radio so that it doesn't reset to channel 16 when the engine is started.
  • RC: Un-stick and lubricate the cabin windows.
  • RC: Devise and implement a way to tie-up and cast-off from the 'Start' marker that doesn't require anyone to risk breaking their neck.
  • RC: Install functional hardware to keep the cabin door open, and then remove the big rock that is doing the job now.
  • RC: Clean the interior of the boat (windows, carpets, surfaces, &c.).
  • RC: The race horn's wiring routinely comes loose at the compressor - fix this.
  • RC: Survey the OEM horn to see if it can be made functional; it's probably just a compressor issue.
  • RC: Repair the crack in the fiberglass that coats the starboard engine support.
  • RC: Fix the fuel gauge and/or sender so that the gauge reads correctly.
  • RC: The bilge pump isn't automatically operating.  If the wiring is correct, then replace it.
  • RC: Polish the blue gelcoat.
  • Other: Survey the outboard engine that is in the storage room.
  • Other: Construct a usage/rigging check-list customized for each boat; in addition to placing a laminated copy on each of the power boats (and near the Sunfish storage racks), this info will be added to the website FAQ.
 Items sought (donations or dirt-cheap):
  • Paddles for all small boats
  • Anything Sunfish
  • Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) for working on the SeaDoo's inflatable tubes
  • VHF radios (wired-12V or handheld), VHF antennas; for all power boats
  • Tarp for Chick Magnet
  • 12V spot/search lights for all power boats
  • Serviceable dock lines, fenders, and snubbers; lines to make slings for the Sunfish
  • Clocks for the RC boat - ideally large digits, including seconds, and radio-set (e.g., 'atomic') so that they won't wind up out of synch with each other
  • Settable combination locks - four-digit
  • Wind-speed measuring instruments
  • Trailer chocks
  • Spare tires/wheels for CM, RC, and SeaDoo trailers
  • 750W or larger AC inverter for the RC boat, also 6 to 8 gauge cable to install it
  • Marine fire extinquishers
  • Hand-held air horns
  • Class IV floatation cushions, functional life jackets (small adult and larger).
  • First-aid kits (and/or fresh supplies) for all boats, a few large towels and wool blankets, and, since it doesn't hurt to ask: a home defibrillator.
  • Man-overboard bagged throwing lines
  • Boat hooks and mounitng hardware
