FROM
THE COMMODORE- DUANE CHALOUPKA
It’s almost half way through the sailing
season and a lot is happening at the club.
In the driest season in memory, the lake is full. I don’t understand Colorado water policy,
but it is making this one of the best seasons I have seen at Carter Lake.
The Rookie racing series is becoming very
popular, with as many as eight boats taking part. That is a huge increase over past years. Junior Sailing Camp registration is
completely full, and among the many preparations, the courtesy dock has been
expanded. The increased level of
participation in these events is not an accident. It is the result of the imagination and hard work of the
committee people, and their willingness to try new ideas.
Even though we have not been having the
normal late afternoon thunderstorms, there have been several days of high winds
resulting in some serious damage to several boats. At a future e-board meeting, we need to discuss possible changes
to reduce the amount of damage we are seeing.
In the mean time, be sure your boat is tied securely, and your insurance
is up to date.
You have probably noticed that the
combinations to the locks on the slip gates have not been changed. The locks require a master key to change the
combination, so if anyone knows where the key is let me know. The padlocks to the courtesy dock and
clubhouse have been changed to the new combination printed on your membership
card.
Good sailing, and good luck to those going to
McConaughy for the Nebraska Governor’s Cup.

VICE COMMODORE- CARRIE PFISTER
July already? Wow~
The Rookie Series and participation of the
crewing members has really taken off, as well as the potlucks. The Women's Day at the lake was a
blast. A big thanks to all of our Committee
Chairs, they have really been working this year.
The lake has been pretty choppy the last few
weeks, due to the increase in power boats and jet skis....please make sure you
sail within your means. It can get ugly
when you are being circled in wakes.
A nice thing? We were racing this past Sunday, and there was a ski boat parked
just off of mark 7 (by the clubhouse, I think they were having lunch). A few sailboats had to go outside of tack
lines to avoid the boat. The Rangers approached the boat and asked them to
move, as it "was interfering with the race course for the
sailboats". It was great to hear
that....
On a personal note, as most of you
know.... Every year at the end of July
I race in the Leukemia Cup Regatta, which raises money for Leukemia (research
and patient services). The Patient Honoree
for this year is David Strathman who lives in Fort Collins. He is 16 years old and was diagnosed when he
was 11. He just finished the 10th grade, which was his first full year of
school since the 5th grade. David was
introduced to sailing when he was 6 months old, and will be sailing on my boat
for the Regatta. His family has a
dinghy and has been up at Carter Lake sailing. I have invited the Strathman family up to the Clubhouse for the
next few potlucks. Please feel free to
introduce yourself. David is an
incredible person, and brings the importance of this Regatta home to Carter
Lake as well as the entire sailing community.
If there is anything you would like to help with for the Regatta
(donations, sponsorships, silent auction items), please contact me at
CPfister99@aol.com, or call 303.457.3839. Your support is always appreciated.

Sail
camp is literally right around the corner! July 10-13th with the Jr. Regatta on
July 14. Jr. Sailors, if you did not
attend the pre camp social last Sunday please note the equipment list and camp
overview at the end of this report. It is full of all the information you need
to arrive at camp on time and with the Jr correct gear. Remember no walkmen,
disc men, gambols or hairdryers!!
Jim,
Ivan, David and Marilyn are all excited about this year's camp. We have 20
students and 14 club and loaner sun fish. Our beginner students will have plenty
of boats and our most advanced students can look forward to a chance to sail a
Mutineer, (thanks to Steve Johnson) a Hunter 170 (thanks to Ivan and the
Anchorage) and a laser (thanks to Jeff Gruver.) Keep working on those skills so
you can move up! We have lots of volunteers and we really
appreciate all the help with time and materials and especially boats. You all
make sail camp a success. Volunteers please email or call Dave or Marilyn if
you have a conflict with the time you volunteered or a question.
There
are only a few needs at this late date but we could use:
1.
a few large coolers to keep water and soft drinks in by the dock
2.
a pump that we could use to pump water for the sail camp showers
Let us know if you can lend any of these items. Call Dave or Marilyn at 303-772-4812 or email us at hugh109@concentric.net
Another plug for the upcoming Jr. Sailing fundraiser/ Silent

HOW:
Donate something for the silent auction ( An item or a service) EX: one of our

All
potlucks have a "cocktail" hour starting at 5:30 p.m., with dinner
served at 6 p.m. Unless specified, they are BYOB. If there is no host, bring a
main dish (or meat to grill) and either a side or dessert to share.
We
are encouraging all members to wear name tags at the potlucks. We have new members and they tell us it
really helps them when we have name tags on. Put your boat name/type too if you
want.

SLIP
COMMITTEE REPORT- MIKE MORGAN
I
can't believe that it is already July. Man is this season flying by. The slips
appear to be in pretty good order although there are a few projects for anyone
needing work hours. The gates could use
a few coats of grey paint and some of the screws on the new slips could stand
being tightened down. These are projects that could be done during the week for
those members having a hard time getting work hours completed during the
weekend.
One
thing that has been brought to my attention is that there have been a number of
members that have been sailing into their slips. This practice is against the
bylaws of the club for safety reasons. Please motor into your slip at all
times. Also there have been a number of boats tying up to the Courtesy Dock.
The weights on this dock are not heavy enough to handle these boats. If a big
blow happens while you are tied up to the Courtesy Dock it will drag the
weights and you could have major damage done to your boat.
Great
Sailing, Mike Morgan

CLUBHOUSE COMMITTEE REPORT-
MIKE & JACKIE GURLEY
Thanks
to Steve Johnson, a relatively new member, for the newer refrigerator--and to
Dave Hughes for taking away the old one!
The drain has been unclogged, and we again ask people not to put any
food or
grease down the drain. Also,
please use water conservatively.
We
continue to have problems with the electricity on the hill, so if any club
member is an electrician, knows electricity, or just has an electrifying
personality and can help us, please call!
Thanks
to all potluck hosts and hostesses who have recently done a great job not only
arranging great potlucks, but also in cleaning the clubhouse and securing the
building. Please let us know if we run
out of any supplies.
Nostalgia
question: We got only one reply to our
last question, so it was either incredibly difficult or no one cares. The only response was from Ann Gurley, who
correctly identified sail #289 on the 1996 and 1998 regatta t-shirts. These were the t-shirts from when we were vice-commodores,
and #289 is the sail number on "recess". Ann wins an all-expense paid vacation to the San Juan Islands
with her parents, but not the bottle of rum.
We
just couldn't concentrate in 103 degree heat today to determine a new question,
so we'll hold the bottle of rum until the August log.
Jackie
and Mike Gurley

ANNOUNCEMENTS

LADIES
SAILING DATES:
June 28th was our 1st ladies sailing day
this year. What an awesome
turnout. 13 women came to have fun
sailing and comrade. Congrats to Sharon McCloskey who brought 4 women sailors
to join us. We all jumped on 3 boats
and went out sailing. Thanks to everyone who shared their boats and knowledge
to help make this event possible. What
a good time it was. And who made those drinks? WOW!!! We hope to make this a monthly event and that more women can
attend. I have had requests that we
have a sunfish sailing day (maybe a race) in July. Maybe we could choose an early evening or a Sunday afternoon to
fit some more women's schedules.
Please email Lana Lohe at lohe@earthlink.net if any of these dates in July will work with
your schedules.
Sunday, July 21st anytime
Monday, July 22nd late afternoon or evening
Tuesday, July 29th late afternoon or evening
Wednesday, July 30th late afternoon or evening
Thursday, July 31st late afternoon or evening
Please feel free to bring
a guest (you just might win a prize like Sharon McCloskey did) for bringing
someone.
If you have any suggestions or would like to have a sailing date
on Friday July 26th then please do so as I won't be in town. That would be great to have someone else
head one up. Just let me know and I'll
send out an email.
Thanks again women sailors,
Lana Lohe
