Carter Lake Sailing Club LOG

August 2002

"To sail is the thing," wrote Arthur Ransome in his children's classic Swallows and Amazons.  And just what is that thing?  Every sailor knows.  It's what the poets say and the pictures show, and everything else, too; it's the joy of casting off and the delight of returning home, and it's all the winds and waves in between.  It's the beauty of a boat and a power of the currents, the sound of ratcheting winches and the strain of the wheel; it's the fair breezes and  sunsets, the storms and luffing sails.  It's the beer in the bar when the race is done, and the moment when you feel you'll never get there.  It's what sailors mean when, safe and dry, standing on solid ground, they look at you and say "I'd rather be sailing."

FROM THE COMMODORE- DUANE CHALOUPKA

Commodore’s Comments:

The sailing season is more than half gone, but some of the best sailing is still ahead.  Now that most of the big events are over, we can relax and enjoy our time at the lake for the pleasure of sailing, instead of spending it on the business of sailing.  Hopefully, many of you who have been taking part in the Rookie series will join the Fall Series and the McGann Cup.  Late season sailing is usually the best of the season, with cooler temperatures and steadier winds.

The silent auction was held Sunday, July 28, and was a great success.  About $1500 was raised to help with expenses for Junior Sailing.  Thanks to all who contributed items, and to all who bid so generously.  I think we must have set a record price for a bottle of rum.

The water level is still good for this time of year, but it is dropping, and we should end the season with a little more water than last year.  The big concern is that there isn’t enough water available to refill the lake over the winter.  The e-board will be meeting soon to discuss options for dealing with future low water years.

VICE COMMODORE- CARRIE PFISTER

We all have seen the level of participation building at CLSC this summer.  It is incredible.  (If you missed the "flotilla" between the docks after the Lady Victory Race, you need to ask someone for details.)

We also have a lot of new things.... (the extension on the courtesy dock, new grills, active crewing members) and new events (the auction, women's sailing days, supervised junior sailing days).   In addition the club has had quite a presence (both crew and boats) at regattas outside of Carter Lake.  We have have been at the WY and NE Govenor's Cup, the Leukemia Cup and in AZ's Lake Pleasant starting this past January.  Dillon will be this weekend. Members of this club have placed well, and some have won at all of these events.  That has to say something for our racing program.

I spent last weekend at Chatfield for the Leukemia Cup, and last night at their Wednesday night series (one race every Wed night starting at 6:30).   I can say that I am done bobbing around in chop (and sailing backwards for that matter), and postponements /shortened courses for no wind for some time.  I have been told this is unusual but am looking forward to returning my boat to her slip at Carter, and actually sailing.  : )    Ready for the fall winds?  (Didn't we just get rested from the spring ones?)

Lots of exciting events (with a few new ones) coming up, so please read through all of the Committee Sections so you don't miss anything.  Thanks to everyone for their support for the Leukemia Cup.  SPLASH was once again the top fund raising boat with almost $1000 coming from CLSC members.

JUNIOR SAILING REPORT- DAVID & MARILYN HUGHES

The 2002 Sail Camp was a fun learning experience for everyone involved; jr. sailors, instructors , volunteers and camp counselors! The camp numbers were extended for the first time to allow for 20 Jr. Sailors nine of whom were new to sailing.  There were 12 girls and 8 boys ranging from ages 10-14.  Mike Ruwitch age 15 volunteered as a Jr. Instructor for the camp as well. The four day camp concentrated on basic sailing skills, dry land activities and more advanced techniques for the returning sailors. For the first time the kids had a chance to use bigger boats. Dale Quakenbush,, Steve Johnson, Ivan Andrade and Jeff Gruver donated the use of their boats so that the Jr. Sailors could practice with a jib and a main sail.  In addition, there were 11 sunfish loaned by club members and friends of club members as well as the two club boats. It was great fun seeing the Jr. Sailors progress  and  have a good time while they were sailing.  Special thanks to Ivan Andrade and Jim Jacobs for volunteering their instruction for the Jr. Sailing program.

Thanks to Floyd Harrison’s digital photography and help from Walter LaMendola and Tracy Ireland there will be a Jr. Sailing Web site. Check it out and see the new pictures posted from this year. A picture sailing is worth a thousand words!

The day after the camp the ANNUAL JUNIOR REGATTA was held. Tom Ruwitch and Ken Owens were the race committee with a host of volunteers. Another first for the Regatta was that every Jr. Sailor showed up to try their hand at racing. There was an A fleet of returning sailors and a B fleet of new sailors. There was even a new Jr. Instructor class initiated. The Regatta made the front page of the Loveland Herald for Monday July 15th. (Jeff Gruver has extra copies if anyone wants to see it.)

REGATTA RESULTS:

A Fleet  1st place Mackenzie Jacobs

   2nd place Gavin Jacobs

   3rd place Haley Heer

   4th place Jenny Gruver

   7th Jonah Miller

5th place Anson Kirkpatrick/Matt Kniss (crew)

6th place Caitlin Owens/Jenna Poulsen (crew)

Jr. Instructor class

    1st place Michael Ruwitch

To help the Jr. Sailors keep improving their skills there will be a number of supervised OPEN SAILING DAYS throughout Aug. Please watch for the Jr. Sailors practicing on the next 3 or 4 Saturdays. Jr. Sailors: call Ivan Andrade if you are going to attend an Open Sail Day.

 SILENT AUCTION:

Two weeks after the Regatta Jr. Sailing hosted a Silent Auction fundraiser to help pay for the cost of courtesy dock expansion and sunfish racks on the dock. The new dock and racks greatly enhanced the sail camp this year and thanks to eboard approval and long hard work by Ivan Andrade, Jim Jacobs and Tom Ruwitch it was all finished by the start of camp.

The auction was held on Caribbean Night after the Rusty Nail and was a great success. Extra credit goes to Tonya Andrade and Molly Scherrer who called club members personally about the auction and Ivan Andrade who sent out explanation/donation cards to each member. The proceeds from the auction totaled $1613.04! Great things were donated from many club members and members were incredibly generous in their bidding. Thanks to all the folks who donated items and services:

MEMBERSHIP REPORT- NANCY VAN DE MARK

No new members this month.

RACE COMMITTEE REPORT- KEITH MARCY

July was another busy month for the Carter Lake racers. We have wrapped up the summer series with congratulations to Paul Scherrer for taking first in the “A” Fleet and Bob Miller for taking first in the “B” Fleet. The complete series results are posted on the website.

Also congratulations to all the women who competed in the Lady Victory Cup, especially to Carrie Pfister who was our winner. This race had a huge comeback from prior years with 4 boats entered and a total of 17 women participating in all. Not to mention a great party afterwards. Plans are already in the works for a larger event next year making it a 2-day event.

Our Fall Series kicks off on August 10th & 11th with our race committee being Bob Miller and Russ Stamets. The rest of the series is wide open for race committee so we will be looking for volunteers that first weekend. Thanks to Bob and Russ for signing up in advance.

The Rookie Series will be wrapping up in August on the 17th. The standings are close right now, so good luck to everyone in the last race. If you still need to sign up for race committee, the fall series is your last chance. Please contact us as soon as possible.

Other notes of Congratulation go to Todd Rogers and Nina Simmers for taking first in the Night Race and also to Paul Scherrer for bringing home the Nebraska Governors Cup from the race at Lake McConaughy on July 5th.  Let’s hope he can make it 3 for 3 with the Colorado Governors Cup in September.

Remember … Fall Series starts August 10th.  Skippers meeting will be at 11:30 at the committee boat!

GIRLS NIGHT OUT!

The participants in the Lady Victory Cup have scheduled Friday, August 23rd for a “Girls Night Out”.  Plans are still formulating, but we have planned on doing some sailing, swimming, a cookout and generally having a good time. There was also talk of some girls staying overnight on their boats.   Please hold that date open if you are interested and more details will be our in the next week or so.  Since a lot of women work, we will probably be gathering around 5:30 – 6:00. If you have any question or suggestions, please give me a call at 303-215-0136.

 SLIP COMMITTEE REPORT- MIKE MORGAN

Is this year flying bye or what? There are no big announcements as far as the slips are concerned. There are a few small projects that need completed if anyone needs work hours. The gate section of the new slips needs spray painted with gray paint and the screws of the decking need tightened. These would be good projects for anyone that needs work hours during the week.

When it cools down we need to look at putting foam into the Breakwater tires.  Hopefully this will help keep the tires floating over the winter. What we  want to try is mixing liquid foam in bags and placing them in the tires. As the foam cures it expands and molds into the tires. This is one solution that a number of clubs and marina's have used to solve the problem of a sinking Breakwater over the winter.

If anyone else has any ideas for the Breakwater please let me know. This is definitely something that needs to be taken care of as launching the breakwater has become harder and more time consuming every year.

Later, Mike Morgan

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND ADS

If you missed the Caribbean Night potluck well that's a shame.  There was a recipe that Tonya Dunn(host of Caribbean night) made and it was a huge success.  Tonya forwarded the recipe to share with the club.  Enjoy!!!

Here's the family recipe all the way from Trinidad:

Mango Chutney

1 whole garlic bulb (or to taste) minced

1 lb. onion, minced

2 large green (underripe) mangoes with skin, diced

1 pint white vinegar

1 t. salt

1 T. pickling spice with pimento in cheese cloth

1 scotch bonnet pepper less seeds, minced (this is very hot, use your descretion. I only used 1/2 pepper)

Boil the above ingredients until mango is tender.

Add: 2 lbs. brown sugar and boil until thick and bubbly. Pour into sterilized jars.
