"Sailing is a good sport.  You don't have to beat up the other guy like you do in boxing or football; you just try to outsmart him, and outsail him, and then you go and have a beer with him."

-John Kolius

FROM THE COMMODORE- DUANE CHALOUPKA

As you all know we are experiencing a very severe drought, but the lake water level will be adequate to finish this season with about 25 feet of water above the end of the boat ramp.  There is very little water available to pump into the lake over the winter though, so we will start next season with the lake at least 30 feet below full.  It is projected that next year the lake level will drop below the end of the boat ramp in late July or early August, so we will have a shortened sailing season.  The Water Conservancy District also plans to construct a new outlet at Dam 1 over the winter of 2003-2004, so the lake may not be full for the start of the 2004 season even if the drought has ended.  The club is facing some tough decisions regarding how to deal with membership and slip fees so that we can still enjoy at least some sailing the next couple of years, and remain financially viable.  The two major expenses regarding slips are: servicing the bond debt, and maintaining the contract with Carter Lake Marina.  Both of these expenses are fixed costs, so our options are limited.  We will discuss the situation at the Fall Banquet, so be sure to attend.

A workday has been scheduled for Saturday, September 28.  There is a small section that did not get finished when we re-chained the breakwater a couple years ago.  We need to finish the job, and also remove the old chain that was left in place.  The extra weight of the old chain is contributing to the sinking problem.  Also, the courtesy dock will be reconfigured into a more rectangular shape, to make docking easier, and more weight will be added to anchor it more securely.  After the two jobs are complete, the breakwater will be wrapped around and tied to the courtesy dock, and anchored for the winter.  That will be one less job to deal with on pullout day.  And speaking of pullout day, it is scheduled for Saturday, October 19, with the following weekend as a backup in case of bad weather.  We will need at least 15 people for the Sept 28 workday so please make plans to attend, and be prepared to get wet and muddy.

It’s time to be thinking about officers and committees for next season.  The officer positions are Commodore, Vice-Commodore, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, and Corresponding Secretary.  If you are interested in running for one of the officer positions, you need to collect 10 signatures and submit them to the nominating committee.  The nominating committee consists of Jon and Kathy Bockelman, and Mark Stieber.  There are four committee chair positions open.  They are Membership, Clubhouse and Grounds, Docks/Breakwater/Slips, and Boats.  If you are willing to take one of the committee chair positions, or are willing to help with these, or any, committee, please let me know.

VICE COMMODORE- CARRIE PFISTER

Hard to believe the season is almost over.   Reviewing the schedule, it sure looks like a busy end to the season.  Please make sure to read through the entire log to ensure you don't miss any races, potlucks, slip work days, slip removal days or banquets....

With the fall winds at Carter, please make if your boat is in a slip, that your dock lines are on correctly and will work with winds from all directions, and that the masts are staggered a bit.  If nothing else, call it a courtesy to the boat next to you.  Also remember to fill out your hours on the work log located on a shelf under the kitchen table in the club house.

We have a lot of XL t-shirts and a few larges from this year's Regatta....now available at a discounted price of $10.  Interested?  They are located in the e-board room..... Make checks out to CLSC.    We also have CLSC burgees available.  See Marge Marcy for details.

JUNIOR SAILING REPORT- DAVID & MARILYN HUGHES

Sail Camp has come and gone but Jr. Sailing is still going strong. Lots of Jr. Sailors have attended the follow up Open Sail Days held in late July and Aug.  Just seeing them out on the lake it is clear that the kids are continuing to gain in proficiency and confidence and there

is so much enthusiasm that several more families have bought sunfish. On Aug. 25th,  four of our Jr. Sailors, Mackenzie Jacobs, Megan Johnson, Mike Ruwitch and Gavin Jacobs, attended the Wes Prisbey Memorial Regatta held by the Denver Sailing Association at Cherry Creek Reservoir.  Mike took a 1st place in the Junior Category and Gavin Jacobs took a 2nd place. Please give these kids a pat on the back for their participation, willingness and success.

Jr. Sailors: please return your comment sheets. We would like to get your views on how to make the jr. sailing program even better.

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped with the Open Sailing days and special thanks to Jim Jacobs, Ivan Andrade and Tom Ruwitch for their efforts to encourage Jr. Racing. We are hoping to host a Jr. Regatta next year where participants from other youth programs can attend.

First, second and third place winners in the A fleet of this year’s Jr. Regatta please attend the fall banquet so you can receive your trophy formally. It has been a great year for Jr. Sailing and we are looking forward to seeing the program continue to grow.

SLIP COMMITTEE REPORT - MIKE MORGAN

Well, it's time to plan for "Pullout". We have set the date for pulling the slips as October 19th. This will give us a fall back weekend if the weather were to turn bad. Please make sure to have your boats out well before this weekend so we can do prep work for the Pullout.

We also have scheduled a work day for September 28th. We need to add more weights to the Courtesy Dock as well as reconfigure it. In addition we need to re-chain some of the Breakwater. At the same time we will remove some of  the old chain that was left on a few years ago. This old chain is probably some of the cause of the problems we have had keeping the Breakwater floating over the winter. If we can we may also try to add more floatation to the tires by putting foam into them.

After this work is completed we will haul the plastic sections of the Courtesy Dock out into the lake and wrap the Breakwater around it for the season.

In order to complete the work we will need to have all of the SunFish removed from the Courtesy Docks before the workday. If you have a boat on the racks please be sure to have it off before we go to work on the Courtesy Dock. We can't reconfigure the sections with the boats on there.

Good Fall Sailing, Mike Morgan

CLUBHOUSE  COMMITTEE REPORT-MIKE & JACKIE GURLEY

One item needs repair in the clubhouse.  The hot water heater needs the pressure valve replaced.  I tried to remove the old one but could not get it to budge.  If anyone wants to work on this please do so, the new valve is on the shelf. Otherwise we will have to buy a new heater.

We have conquered the ants!  For those of you who don't know we had a large ant infestation.  They decided to nest in the first aid kit and the upper cupboard.  The club is in the woods with lots of bugs and animals running around.  Food left in the cupboards might be a nice thing for the home but at the sail club is is a disaster waiting to happen and it did.

PLEASE toss out or take home leftover food.  PLEASE don't leave half used cartons of food.  We had ants in the spices, open sugar bowl, salt and pepper shakers and everywhere else.  Your help is appreciated.

Now for a nostalgic moment--

Ten years ago,  August 1992, we had 75 members in the club.  Today we have 80 members.    How many members were members in 1992 and are still members?  (not including corresponding members).  E-mail your answer to us.  The winner wins a bottle or Rum. We will also let you know who they are in the next log.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! We are attempting to organize the records for Carter Lake Sail Club.  If you have any old logs or information, we would love to take a look.  We are especially missing the years from early seventies back to the fifties.  We also would like to put together a complete list of past commodores.  If you remember a commodore in the past will you please let us know the name and year they were commodore?  We needs the names prior to 1990.

Mike & Jackie Gurley
