Carter Lake Sailing Club LOG
OCTOBER , 2002
Editor- Lana Lohe
- Carter Lake Sailing Club’s 44th Year
Carter Lake
Sailing Club, 3511 S. County Rd. 31, Loveland, CO 80537
Twenty years from now, you will be more
disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore.
Dream. Discover. !!!

FROM THE COMMODORE- DUANE CHALOUPKA
We’ve
come to the bitter end of another sailing season. (Isn’t it interesting how many words in common use came from
sailing, and most people have no idea what they really mean.) The races and potlucks are done, and about
all that is left is to stow equipment for the winter. It was encouraging to see the increased participation in
activities this year, especially all the new racers in the Rookie Series, and
the improvements in the Youth Program.
Thank you, to everyone who worked to make all the events successful.
We
had a good workday Sept. 28th, after a slow start due to problems
with the workboat. More
weight was added to the courtesy dock to get it ready for the winter and next
season, and weight was removed from the breakwater by cutting of much of the
old chain. There is still more work
needed on the breakwater. Please read
Mike Morgan’s report for more details, and remember that slip pullout day is
Oct 19.
The
final event of the season is the Fall Banquet, Saturday Nov. 2, in Fort
Collins. Don’t’ forget to send your
reservations to Raegan Morgan, and I hope to see you there.
Duane

VICE
COMMODORE- CARRIE PFISTER
Well. The season is quickly drawing to a
close. It doesn't seem that long ago
that boats were colliding all over the place at the CLSC Open Regatta....
I thought I would provide you with a few suggestions to get that sailing fix over the next few months:
1. I just finished watching a segment of the Louis Vuitton Cup with another sailor and found both of us yelling "get the spinnaker down" as it tore in halves. This race selects the challenger to race against Team New Zealand for the America's Cup. You can find it on the Oudoor Life Channel, and can find schedules through ESPN's website. Amazing match racing on $30M boats.
2. Attend the CSLC Fall Banquet on November
2nd in Fort Collins. New members always
find this a bit entertaining. Seeing
everyone dressed up in something other than swimsuits and shorts...hard to even
recognize a few. LOL.
3. Attend the Denver Boat Show held at the Convention Center January 9-12, 2003. The CLSC has an informational booth there (great for off-season work hours), and we will be offering discounted tickets in advance this year if you wish to attend. More details willfollow.
4. Attend the S.A.I.L. (Sailing Assoc. of Intermountain Lakes) seminars. Carter Lake had a nice turn out at these last year. They are informational meetings on tactics, rigging, tuning and racing. They will once again be held at Brooklyn's by Invesco Field the 3rd Wed of each month from 7-9pm Jan through April. You can have dinner and drinks throughout the meeting. A great place to meet sailors and learn in the off season. And
5. Charter a trip. (Is there ever a BAD time for one of these???)
See
everyone at slip take out day!!!
Carrie

TREASURER
- DENISE MORIARTY
Hey
everybody!
Time
to wrap things up! Please get any receipts that you have to me as soon as possible (with the
necessary approvals, ofcourse). I would also appreciate any
"heads-up" on upcoming expenses, such as trophies, etc. If you won't be able to get a receiptto
me by October, please e-mail me with an estimate of the amount, and what it's
for.
Also, this is the last
chance for bondholders to get me any changes in address, etc., before I mail out
the bond payment for this year. In addition, if you're information changes
before the end of the year, let me know that also, as I will be mailing the taxstatements
in January.
Thanks!
Denise

We have just wrapped up a great race season and would like to thank everyone who helped make this year a success.
THANKS
–
To
all of the participants in the Rookie Series, thanks for your enthusiasm and
eagerness to make this new program successful!
To
all of the women, skippers and crew, who sailed in the Lady Victory Cup. This was the largest turnout in several
years and showed the strength of the women sailors at Carter Lake.
And last but not lease, thanks to all of the “regulars” who manned the committee boat , showed up to support and train the new racers in the Rookie Series and for being their “Rock Stars” and for making this once again great competitive season!
Next year we are planning to continue the Rookie Series, making the Lady Victory a 2 day regatta and adding a dingy fleet to our regular series races.
Have a great winter!
SOCIAL COMMITTEE REPORT-
RAEGAN MORGAN, STAN AND SHIRLEY CONNALLY
Information about the Fall Banquet is on the last
page of the log. Please print off, fill
out and return to Raegan Morgan.
Deadline is October 16, 2002.
SLIP COMMITTEE REPORT- MIKE MORGAN
Well,
regretfully it's time to rap up the season. Pull out is planned for October
19th and 20th unless the weather doesn't cooperate. We will start at 9:00 each
morning. Lunch will be provided by the club but bring your own beverages.
We
will also need some help in the afternoon of the 18th in order to do prep work
for the pullout. Please let me know if you can help that Friday afternoon.
Please
be sure to have your boats off of the slips before the 18th as we will be
moving the slips closer to the ramp.
I
want to thank everyone that helped on the last work day. Because of the
problems with the Whaler and the weather we weren't able to finish all of the
work. We will need to install the new floats to the breakwater before winter. I
need a small crew to help attach the floats either of the next couple of
Saturday's. If you can help there let me know.
We
also need for the members to begin saving up 2 litre pop bottles. We are going
to insert these into some of the tires. It will take 100's of these bottles so
I would appreciate it if everyone could start saving these.
Thanks,
Mike Morgan

CLUBHOUSE COMMITTEE REPORT-
MIKE & JACKIE GURLEY
The
Year is winding down there is a lot to do at the clubhouse but we will
not be able to finish all we had planned this
year. Next year we will
leave
the clubhouse in the good hands of another club memeber. For the
final
work day which is Saturday October 19, 2002 we are planning a cleanup
day,
painting of the tables, repair of the water heater, and general work
around
the clubhouse. The water will be turned
off at the end of the day
for
the remainder of the year.
Nostalgic
answer:
We
look around every year and wonder who the "new" people are. Who are
they? They are the members of the future and
members who are here now and
gone
tomorrow. The club changes every year
and we forget who has come and
gone
and come back. In 1992 the club had 75
members. These members were
regular
members and corresponding members. They
are: Andrews, Bates,
Bender,
Bochelman, Goedert, Green, Gurley, Jacobes, Jaeger, Kaptain, Keiser,
Kresge,
Linton, Makepeace, Miller B., Muchow,
Owens, Padget, Pfeifer,
Ransdell,
Rogers, Shepherd, Timmons, Waldburger, Wilson and Winans. For a
total
of 26. The information was taken from
the "Log" dated July 22, 1992
and
compared to the members list as appeared this year. We hope we did not
miss
anyone. The Commodore was Paul Kresge
in 1992. A boat named "Alberta
May"
was for sale by Don and Pat May who live in Mexico now. And the last
pot
luck was the Rusty Nail on October 3.
And
the winner of a bottle of Mount Gay Rum is The Bockelman's. They had
the
most right and were the only answer.
This months question.
This
is for you old timers and I mean really old timers. Carter Lake Sailing Club was at one time the Denver Sailing
Club. The Regatta was known as the
Carter Lake Inventional Regatta.
What
year did the name change to Carter Lake Sailing Club from Denver Sailing
Club? Another bottle of rum is on the
line.
We
need help. We are trying to put a list
of all past commodores. We can go back
into the late 1980's but are having problems early than that. If you were a, or know of past commodores
will you call, write or e-mail us at recess12@attbi.com 303-460-0340 and give
us a name and date. Even if you are
unsure of the date we need the names.
Thanks Mike and Jackie.
