FROM THE
EDITOR- LANA LOHE
I asked all the
2003 e-board members to write a short profile and their e-board position for
our November log. Hope you enjoy them.
I would first like to welcome all the new members and returning
members. I am Lana Lohe, the
Corresponding Secretary again this year for our monthly newsletter. I gather
all the e-board monthly log entries and prepare a monthly newsletter for all
CLSC members. I also send out reminder
emails for the e-board for items such as dock/clubhouse repair work days,
racing and potluck theme reminders. I
really enjoy doing the newsletter for the CLSC and hope you enjoy reading
it.
My husband, Robert and I have been in the sail club for 7
years. We both are originally from
Kansas City, Mo. and moved here so Robert could go to college in Boulder and
Denver. We have one daughter Stephanie,
who was already a young teenager when we discovered our passion for
sailing. She thinks sailing is either
way too slow or way too fast and heels over to far. So she stays on land.
I came from a power boat/fishing family
who camped and fished every weekend of my growing up years. So when we moved here and went looking for
lakes close by to go camping and boating,
man did we get a shock. Coming
from the Midwest where the lakes ARE REALLY LAKES, it was difficult to adjust
to a three- mile long lake. One day we
drove up to Carter and saw some sailboats out racing (well at the time we
didn't know what they were doing). So
we decided we'd give it a try. We found
an AMF puffer in the paper and drove up to Granby Lake and bought it. Brought it home and didn't have a clue how
to rig and sail a boat. After many
unsuccessful attempts and dumping the boat over, we finally figured it out and
enjoyed it.
We moved up to a Catalina 22 after the
first year so I could keep my food, clothes and refreshments dry. Then 3 years ago we decided we needed more
room and bought a Catalina 27, Rebel Force.
We love sailing and racing her.
I love to have a good time at potlucks
and just sitting on my boat. You will
most generally hear me laughing from just about anywhere on the lake and in the
slips. J
I would like to ask your help with something. I want to jazz up our newsletter by creating
a fun and catchy name for our monthly newsletter. So you're saying, "What's in it for me?" Well, I'll bring home a bottle of good Rum
from the BVI for the best, catchy, jazzy and creative name I get from you by
November 22. So put on your thinking
caps and either email or call me your thoughts and may the best sailor win!
As I know everyone is looking forward
to the 2003 sailing season, just don't forget about the
boat show in January and our Winter Welcome Membership meeting in February.
Read lot's of sailing books and watch
all the sailing movies you can. Tape
all the Louis Vuitton & American's Cup races so you can get you through
this winter and we'll see you all at the boat show.

13.5pt;font-family:"Times New Roman"'>FROM THE COMMODORE- CARRIE PFISTER
Well, here it is November. Both the boats and slips are out and all of
sudden we have free time again. Seems
strange, doesn't it... to have spare time?
We had an incredible turn out for the
fall banquet on Nov 2nd. A big thanks
to Raegan Morgan, Shirley Connally and Nina Simmers for their work and time in
planning it.
Carter Lake Sailing Club is very fortunate. We have great amenities; a clubhouse, single
slips, sunfish, sailing camps, etc. But
it is the members and our camaraderie that make the club what it is. Part of my focus as
Commodore this year will be to provide opportunities for members to
become better acquainted and learn more about the other members in our
club. We are going to start this with
the November log by introducing you to the Executive Board and Committee
Chairman. Each one will tell you a bit
about themselves, and a bit about their job with the club. The energy level with this board is great. I am very excited to work with them, and I
think as you read the profiles you will be as well.
A bit about myself. My mom first took me sailing when I was in
the 3rd grade. I loved
it. Something about the sound of the
wind and water ...
I joined Carter Lake Sailing Club 5
years ago after racing on Lake McConaughy with a club member. Having sailed
dinghies until that point, it was great not to be wet all of the time. I then took basic keel lessons, bought a
Merit 25 and named her SPLASH. I have been
on the E-Board for the last 3 years: 2
years as Membership Chairman, and 1 year as Vice Commodore.
I am very excited to hold this position
and continue to watch the club grow in membership as well as the further
development of our programs and events.

VICE COMMODORE- RAEGAN MORGAN
The 2002 sailing season went out with
a bang at the Fall Banquet Nov. 2. Despite the snow, we had a record 84 members
attend. I'd like to thank Nina Simmers, for without her we couldn't have access
to the University Club/Cherokee Room. Nina and Todd were great to help with
planning and executing this year-end event. The Marcy's did an excellent job
with the trophies. And kudos also goes to Stan and Shirley Connally, my
Social-committee co-chairs for all their help with the banquet and this year's
other social functions. We had an awesome year!
I would like to solicit feedback from
club members regarding the past years-social events. I'd love to hear what you
liked/didn't like; what you would like to see done differently; any ideas that
you may have, etc. Please e-mail me at REMorgan@aol.com with your comments, and
I'll forward them on to next year's social committee, Nina Simmers and Todd
Rogers.
Next year you'll find me sitting on
Snallygaster, or 26' MacGregor, trying to figure out what it means to be Vice
Commodore!
My main focus as Vice Commodore. is
running the Carter Lake Open, an annual regatta hosted by our club each
June. Racers from Colorado and
neighboring states compete in this 2-day race. It's one of the highlights of
the sailing season and is a great time for racers and non-racers alike. There
will be ample opportunities to get involved and help pull off a fun and
well-organized race. Stay tuned!
Raegan Morgan

TREASURER
- DENISE MORIARTY
Hey Everyone!
I'm Denise Moriarty.
I've been a member of the Carter Lake Sailing Club since 1996, and have
been Treasurer since 1997. The job of
Treasurer entails keeping all of the financial books and records of the
Club. I take part in the budget process
in January, in order to develop a reasonable budget for that next year, and
present that budget to the membership at the Winter Membership Meeting in February. Throughout the sailing season, (and before
and after) I collect any money due to the Club and pay out the
expenses. I provide
financial information to the E-Board as necessary throughout the year, and at
the Fall Banquet I present the income statement for that year. Sometime between January and March 15th, I
finalize the financial statements of the Club, and prepare Form 990, which is
the informational tax return required by the IRS. These statements, and the 990, can be made available to anyone in
the Club on request.
As for me, I joined the Club because of my interest in learning
to sail. I am still working on that
goal, and currently, I don't own a boat.
My daughter, Erin, is almost five and literally has grown up in the
Club. She attended her first Winter
Membership Meeting at the age of 1 month.
I have sincerely enjoyed the friendships I've made at Carter Lake, and
look forward to staying active, improving my sailing skills, and continuing to
expose
Erin to the joys of sailing and being on the water, as well as
the friendships that is available here.
I thank all of you for the support and encouragement you have shown to
this novice sailor.
Denise Moriarty

JUNIOR
SAILING REPORT- DAVID & MARILYN HUGHES
We got the bug to start sailing from several crewing experiences
with two
friends who did a 2-year cruise from North Carolina to Venezuela
and back.
After being on their boat we decided that we really had to get into
sailing
in Colorado. We both took a
number of ASA classes with Terry Killion
including his bare boat class in Florida and rented his Santana 22
at Carter
Lake for a season before joining the club.
We joined the club 3 years ago and bought our 18 foot Catalina
"Dulcinea" at
the boat show that year. That spring Marilyn took a week long class
with a
women captain in Nanaimo, British Columbia and David did a cruise
through
the Canadian Gulf Islands.
Since that time we have
volunteered to chair the Jr. Sailing Program at
Carter Lake. When Paul Corzatt gave his program to us, we decided
to add to
it by attending the Red Cross small boat class and the instructor
course
through Community Sailing which qualified us as Red Cross small
boat
instructors. We have also become more and more interested in
racing. David
enjoys crewing for other racers and we have participated in several
rookie
races and the rookie series on our own boat.

MEMBERSHIP
REPORT- SHIRLEY CONNALLY
As Chair of the Membership Committee I
am in charge of acquiring and welcoming new members, re-registering current
members, campground, and Sunfish spaces.
Our first big event of the year is the 2003 Denver Boat Show, January
9-12, at the Colorado Convention Center.
Carter Lake Sail Club will once again have a booth where we will have a
picture display and information about our club, as well as membership
applications. This is where our club gets a lot of our new members.
For current members, this is a good
time to start fulfilling work hours, because we need people to man the
booth. And we’ve already started
filling in time slots, so be sure to contact me soon if you want a particular
time slot—they are in 2 hour increments.
The times are 2-10pm on Thursday the 9th, noon to 10pm on
Friday the 10th, 10 to 10 on Saturday the 11th, and 10 to 5 on Sunday the 12th.
My goal as Membership Chair is to make
sure all new and current members feel welcome at the club and its
activities—potlucks, races, ladies’ sail days, what have you. I plan to set up a mentor program so that
each new member family is paired with one or two other specific families to
help them get established. These mentor
families would contact the new member by phone, answer questions, maybe even
make arrangements to meet them at the lake, specifically inviting them to and
meeting them at potlucks, and maybe even acting as co-hosts with the new family
at a potluck--things like that. Let me
know if you are interested in being a mentor family/person.
I also plan on taking pictures of all
of the club members I can to make a poster to be hung at the clubhouse with
member names and their boat names on it.
This should be helpful not only to new members but to current members
too. We’re finding that a lot of
members don’t know other members either, even ones that have been around for
awhile. This picture taking will begin
at the February membership meeting, so be prepared!
My husband Stan and I have been members
of CLSC for 2 years. This last year we
served as co-chairs of the Social Committee with Raegan Morgan. We have a Catalina 22, Cay Cat, and have
just purchased a Capri 25, Escape Velocity.
We’ve been sailing for only about 4 years, and often trailer our 22 to
other areas around the US for week-long sailing trips. We really enjoy the potlucks at the club
because that is where we’ve really been able to meet a lot of the other
members. And the themes for them are
lots of fun. We hosted a new theme this
last year—Hillbilly Hoedown—and look forward to new ones next year as well as
the tried and true themes.
This last year we tried racing a few
times, but having problems even getting across the START line (!) and timing
out have plagued us unmercifully. Now
that we have the Capri, I guess we are committed to trying to be racers this
next year (A Fleet nonetheless, what a hoot!), since it is the Capri that we
will put in our slip. Our son, Jake,
and his wife, Corri, are sailors too and will be crewing for us—if they don’t
mutiny or jump ship on us because of our ineptitude. Our 21-year-old daughter, Jenni, occasionally sails with us, but
the lack of 21-year-old males in the club means she isn’t around as much as she
might otherwise be. Oh, well.
Shirley Connally
I am Ivan Andrade. I have been appointed
as Race Committee chairperson but also help with docks/breakwater and help with
Junior Sailing as an instructor. Primary responsibilities as Race Committee are
to schedule the 30 plus days of racing on Carter Lake without too many
conflicts with other clubs major regattas. Seems fairly simple on the surface
but the sailing season is short in Colorado and a lot of sailing gets packed
in. Along with event scheduling I will be organizing volunteers to actually run
the races.
I have a Capri 22, Tempus
Fugit, that my wife, Tonya Dunn, and I race. Between daysailing, Junior
instruction, keel boat instruction, local and regional race events I usually
sail 80+ days a year with the majority geared towards performance boat
handling. I like to race and sincerely enjoy
watching others improve their boat handling skills under the
pressure of a race. As evidenced by my title and responsibilities, I am a
strong booster of racing. It's a great way to meet people, improve as a
skipper, learn as a crewmember and enjoy the outdoors.
My daughter, Avana,
14 at this time, owns a Sunfish and takes part in the Junior Sailing Camp at
Carter Lake every year. She has made great friends that also enjoy the sport of
sailing with aspirations to race more this year and collect some hardware. The
more she races the better her chances. The desire to travel and sail is a major
factor for her to get a drivers license and car. My wife, Tonya, had great
success in her first year of sailing, taking 2nd in the Rookie Series at Carter
Lake against a wicked little Santana 20 that thankfully won't be raced on
Carter any more.
My wife, daughter
and sailing friends are the engine that drives my desire to promote racing. To
that end I propose to build on the great race committee work of the Keith and
Marge Marcy from 2002. They have done so much to get it pulled together and
create a great momentum that in some ways they have made my job easy. These are
my objectives for the upcoming year:
-A bigger, better
more over the top Rusty Nail!!!
-Continued Rookie
Series with extra help from the best racers as boat coaches before, during and
after the races.
-At least 10 boats
in the Lady Victory women's only race. (Thank you, Mike Wilson)
-Host a Junior Regatta
for the region of Sunfish and Snipes at Carter Lake (Thank you, Jim Jacobs)
-Get more dinghies
(Juniors and adults) involved in Carter Lake events.
As a kid growing up in Wisconsin
between Lake Michigan and numerous small lakes, I was always spellbound by
sailboats. My sailing started at a YMCA camp and continued off and on for 27
years with amazing experiences on the coasts and inland. Many people who have
not sailed ask me why in a landlocked state such as Colorado would anyone get
so involved in sailing. My answer is both profound and simple: Nothing sets me
free of time and worries like a day spent sailing. As my Dad used to say,
"Tempus Fugit", (time flies), so get out and sail more before time
escapes. Set your timers to 5 minutes and see you at start line!!!

TODD ROGERS AND NINA SIMMERS
Nina and I are the new Social
committee co-chairs. For those of you
who don't know Nina, she's definitely "social". So this will be a
great position for her. We'll do our best
to have another great social program at the club. We've already had a couple of volunteers to help us with the
activities which we certainly appreciate. Thanks Gay and Shannon!
While Nina has
been an "official" member for a year, I have been a member of CLSC since 1983. I am a past commodore (1998) and was chair
of the boats committee in 1994 and 1995 and co-chair of the slips committee for
numerous years previous to that.
We are both happy to be serving as
committee chairs and doing our part to keep CLSC the great club that it has
always been.
We ask that
members start thinking about what potluck you would like to host this coming
season. A sign up board will be
available at the Winter Membership Meeting in February. Some themes will be suggested, but we
welcome any new ideas too. Finally we
would like feedback on the Fall Banquet; food, venue, etc."

SLIP COMMITTEE REPORT- MIKE MORGAN
In this months log they want us to give
a description of ourselves and our committee so I will try to give everyone
short synopsis of myself and the committee. The slip committee is in charge of
maintaining/installation of the slips, breakwater, courtesy docks and assigning
slips. Helping me with slips are Jeff
Gruver and Ivan Andrade.
My wife Jan and I started sailing in
1997 and joined the club in 1998. We have three children Shanna who is a senior
in college, Kendra who is in her second year of college and Garrett who is 8th
grade. Of our children Garrett is the most active in the club and has
participated in the last 3 Jr. sailing Camps. Our boat is "Liquid
Assets" a S-2 8.0 meter sloop.
We are cruising sailors and started
sailing to gain experience for Bare Boat Chartering. Since joining the club we
have chartered 6 times. The club has helped give us the experience to charter
in the Great Lakes, Galveston, Annapolis, and three times in the Virgin
Islands.
A warning to everyone, look out when
you see us head out on the lake as bad weather follows us around. When you see
our boat heading out you know it is about ready to start a blow. During our
charters we have experienced 70+ knot winds, water spouts, tornado's and been
over ran by a white squall. On Carter we have been in 50+ knot winds more times
than I wish to remember, including the infamous 1998 80+ knot storm. I thought
sailing was supposed to be relaxing.
I am looking forward to the 2003
season. Our main goal next year is to work on the Break Water so that it
doesn't sink every winter. over the winter we will be adding floatation
whenever we get a break in the weather. Over the last few years we have
improved the slips and the courtesy docks know its time to concentrate on the
monster that is the Break Water.
See everyone at the Boat Show.
Later, Mike Morgan

CLUBHOUSE COMMITTEE REPORT- DALE QUAKENBUSH
I believe my job is to see that the club house and surrounding area
are maintained and kept up. It seems to be in great shape.( thanks to Mike and
Jackie Gurley and all who did a great amount of work last year)
This my second year with the CLSC . I am very excited about next
year and am looking forward to being more involved next year. I have over 25
years in construction and repair so this e-board spot fits well.
I am single parent with a 17 year old daughter Amanda at home and 3
grown and gone, Brian, Jason & Kristen.
I have sailed a Holder 14 (no name yet) for 4 years .I joined CLSC last
to crew and learn to sail better. It worked. I crewed on at least 20 race days
on 9 or more boats. I had an absolutely
great summer. I hope for a fast winter (with lots of snow) and an early spring.
