PFISTER
Welcome to the start of the 2003 log for the
Carter Lake Sailing Club.
Living in a state that is experiencing a drought,
you would never know it by visiting Carter Lake. I was up there over this past weekend, and the lake is full. I am not sure about everyone else, but with
the nice weather that we have had, I am getting a bit anxious about launching
"Splash", talking with my dock mates and the potlucks.
Please remember that all boats are required to
have current registration stickers (and correct CL numbers) as well as valid
park passes. Annual registration for
both boats and cars for Larimer County lakes can be done on line at: http://www.co.larimer.co.us/Parks/permits.htm Please note there is a discount for Larimer
County residents and another discount for a second vehicle. I used this site last year, and had my
passes within 3 days. Registering your
boat with Colorado for the 2003 season can be done at: www.parks.state.co.us All boats including dinghies must have the
state stickers.
Just a reminder to those who have left dinghies at
the lake over the winter.... The area is not regularly supervised and does not
have the traffic that the sailing season does, so there is always a risk of
something happening.
We had a very successful turnout at the Convention
Center in January for the Colorado Boat Show.
Although overall attendance was down 15%, I will say that while I was
there, the booth was busy. There was a big interest by potential new members in
our racing program, sail camp and crewing memberships. A big thanks to Shirley Connally for the new
display boards and great brochures!
February will bring another SAIL (Sailing
Association on Intermountain Lakes) training seminar, to be held on the 19th at
Brooklyns in Denver. Details can be found on the SAIL website, which you can
find under "Other Links" on the CLSC home page.
The Winter Membership Meeting will be held on the
22nd of February (details under Social Committee). We will have potential and new members there, so if you see any
new faces, please introduce yourself and make them feel welcome. Remember how
you felt when you were new and didn't know anyone? If anyone (other than the
E-Board members) has any items they wish to put on the agenda, please let me
know by the 15th.
Thanks and see you in February,
Carrie

VICE
COMMODORE- RAEGAN MORGAN
Mark your calendars!!
The date for the 44th annual Carter Open Regatta
has been set. It will take place on
the weekend of May 31/June 1. If you've never been
to one of our regattas, you are missing
out! Even if you don't race, there's plenty of fun to be had -- from watching the
races from the slips to great food, drinks and commarade at the clubhouse. But
a successful Regatta relies on a lot of dedicated people to help with every
aspect. At our winter meeting in February, I will have a list of tasks for club
members to sign up for. Please consider helping wherever you can. I will also have the regatta shirts
available at the winter meeting. This year, there will be 3 designs to choose
from: T-shirts ($15), long-sleeve T's ($18), and polos ($22). Lastly, I am
looking for Regatta sponsors and door prize donors. Please let me know if you
or your company would like to help.
See you at the winter meeting ready to sign up for
helping out at this years Carter Open.

JUNIOR SAILING REPORT- DAVID
& MARILYN HUGHES
Planning is getting underway for the 2003 Jr.
Sailing program. Sail camp will run the week of July 13-19. It will be split in
two sessions this year: One session will be beginning/intermediate training and
another session will include more advanced training and Jr. Instructor
certification. Details and registration forms will be available at the Feb.
22nd winter meeting and will be available on the web site in March. In addition
we will be scheduling several pre camp sail days in late June to help previous
Jr. Sailors review their skills before the start of camp. Carter Lake will also host an Open Jr.
Regatta for the first time. We are looking forward to an exciting season of Jr.
Sailing.

and their home phone is (970) 407-8788.
John & Lynda McGinley
of Nederland have a 25’ Evelyn named Toad Hall. Toad Hall is a racer and the McGinleys are interested in racing,
crewing and our social events. Their
email address is mcginley@fsl.noaa.gov
and their home phone is (303) 258-7757.

In
an effort to make sure that all new members feel welcome and learn their way
around as soon as possible, we are arranging a mentor for each new member. The mentor would contact the new member to
specifically welcome them, make arrangements to meet them at the club and show
them around if need be, specifically invite them to a potluck and introduce
them around, maybe make arrangements to co-host a potluck with them, introduce
them to others with the same type of boat they have or that have the same
interests they have, that kind of thing.
So if you think being a mentor would be a fun and worthwhile thing to
do, please contact us at connsj@concentric.net.
****************
Don’
t forget that we must have your membership application and all fees paid by March 15 in order for you to retain your slip or
your spot on the wait lists. If you are
not already on a wait list and want to be placed on one, you are added to the
wait list based on the date upon which your fully paid membership application
is received. So sooner is better if you
need to be added to any of the wait lists--slip, sunfish, campsite.
Be
sure to send the app and fees to us at the address on the bottom of the
membership application. Membership
applications were sent via email to each current member on January 10, so check
your emails of that date if you missed it.
Otherwise you can contact me to send another one to you by email or
snail mail. Those without email were
sent the application form by snail mail on January 15.

Stan and Shirley Connally
The 2003 race season will have a few minor
additions to the schedule to respond to the requests from club members. We are adding Cruiser friendly races
including the Dinghy Dash and the Blender Boat race that will highlight the
more civilized aspects of sailing. Eating, drinking and ice in the blender can
be just as important as demanding starboard rights or room at the mark. The
emphasis is on “FUN”. The Rookie Series is expanded with coaching planned
throughout the series for ALL participants. The Lady Victory series is expanded
to a two day event. Carter Lake will
also be hosting a Junior Open Regatta, part of a three race series at Cherry
Creek and Dillon, exclusively for Junior Sailors. These minor changes are in
response to input and requests of club members but interestingly the success of
these events is dependant upon many of the same members as volunteers. It’s a
win win situation though, volunteers for the race committee can log plenty of
membership hours and be entertained by those crazy port tackers. As a race
committee volunteer you get the opportunity to truly learn from someone else’s
mistake, often repeated two or three times in one day! Imagine the power; put a
flag up make ‘um wait, take it down make ‘um go. Sign up early and often at the Winter membership meeting to get
the best seat. At these prices, seats
won’t last forever!!

SLIP COMMITTEE REPORT- MIKE MORGAN
Well, it's time to start planning for the next
sailing season. The water level is planned to be within 10 feet of full so it
should be a good season. As most of you have probably heard the Hydro project
has been postponed so we should have a full season. With the current snow pack
the way it is though we should plan on the possibility of low water by late in
the season.
Slip Put-In in scheduled for the weekend of March
29th & 30th. We will also are planning a work day on March 15th with the 22nd
as an alternate. We need to repair the slips, add additional axles to the ramps
and install more jugs into the breakwater.
We still need more jugs for the tires. We need a
variety of sizes, from 2 liter Pop Bottles to 1 gallon Milk Jugs. Bring
your empty bottles to the Winter Membership Meeting and we will collect them.
See Every One At The Winter Meeting,
Later, Mike Morgan

CLUBHOUSE COMMITTEE REPORT- DALE QUAKENBUSH
Lana sent word it is time for the Feb.
report, so Amanda and I packed a lunch on Sunday and went to the clubhouse and
ate on the deck. It was a beautiful day with nice breezes from the
southeast. The water level is about
15'-20' from full. Looks like lots of water to start this year. We sat for a
good hour just soaking up the sun. Would have been nice to sail but it is the
last Sunday in Jan. even if it felt like March. The clubhouse looks great from
all the work everyone did last year.
And a special thanks to Mike and Jackie Gurley for all their hard work
on keeping the clubhouse standing without ANTS. We are working on getting some more gravel put on the road up
past the clubhouse up to the boat parking and camping area this late
winter-early spring and will get a work day around the slip put in time to
clean up the grounds and camping areas. Looks like some fine grading and
erosion control might be needed to keep the ground from eroding away and
causing mud to go down in the camping areas when it snows and rains again.
(hopefully).
Very important: Please put your
trailer license plate number on the application forms so we can identify the
owners if needed.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the winter meeting in Feb.
Dale Quakenbush

ANNOUNCEMENT:
January
25, 2003
Hello
from the Helm.
For
those of us who race sailboats, we are used to reading the sailing
instructions
that we all receive at skippers' meetings prior to the start of
the
race. The first instruction is almost
always: "The decision to race or
not
race rests solely with the skipper of the yacht".
Well,
it is with great sadness that I let you know that Rocky Mountain
Boatworks
has decided to "not race".
Over the past 10 years, we have helped
many
of you prepare for racing, taught racing, and even prepared your boat
to
win races. I am proud to have helped
and am thankful for the business
that
you have given us over the years. It's
great to see all the commotion
at
area lakes each Wednesday evening, and all the excitement at Dillon each
weekend.
Now,
I would like to introduce you to Mr. Dan Mundy. Dan is the President
of
Sundance Marine. Dan and his operation
will be moving into the Rocky
Mountain
Boatworks facility immediately. Dan
sells Sea Ray, and runs a
first-class
dealership. Sundance Marine will be
open full time beginning
March
1, 2003.
In
the short term, we need to sell what is left in the showroom. Everything
is
now on sale. February 7 is the last day
for huge savings. Come on in
and
stock up on what you might need.
For
those of you who store your boat with us, Sundance Marine will be your
new
landlord beginning February 1, 2003.
All storage charges will be billed
by
them. Contact Sundance Marine for
further storage arrangements. Both
Rocky
Mountain Boatworks and Sundance Marine will be operating in the
building
for a short while, so feel free to come in and say hi.
Once
again, thank you for giving us the opportunity to make sailing in
Colorado
the reality that it is.
Best
Wishes,
James
H. Keesling
President
