A big thanks to Todd and Nina for
hosting a great Winter Membership meeting.
As close as we could figure, the attendance was just over 100
people!! An additional thanks to Lana
Lohe for providing a venue that fits us all comfortably as well as to Shirley
Connally for all of her "new member" work since January.
There are lots of things going on, so
please make sure to read the entire log, and mark your calendars. Big days to remember: March 15... Work day and final day for dues
and slip payments. March 29-30....slip
launching day.
Just a reminder that bylaws require
all slip holders to be present for slip launching and retrieval. If you can not make it, please let Mike
Morgan or myself know. If you have
never been to one, please try to make it, even you don't have a slip. It takes a lot of work, and is a great way
to meet other members. I was in awe the
first time I saw the boom truck in action, and full docks with fingers being
floated from the boat launch to their home for the season. It still amazes me.
Boats can not be placed in the slips until all of the slip work
and break water work is completed (another reason to show up and get this done
quickly) and all stickers (county and registration) for 2003 are on the boats.
Larimer County passes for both cars and boats can be done over the internet at:
https://www.co.larimer.co.us/parks/permits/index.cfm. Colorado registration can be done on line at:
www.parks.state.co.us Our license for operating as a club with
Larimer County is up for renewal this year, so please do not let the stickers
become an issue.
Starting with this issue of the log,
you will also see a quick refresher on a bylaw (or rule / regulation from the
bylaws). The E-Board has recognized the
fact that alot of members have not read them, or are unaware of some of the
regulations. Please read them when you
have time....
Guideline\refresher this month: Sailing in and out of the slips is strictly
prohibited. This is pretty self
explanatory. This is a safety issue as
well as a preventative measure for the preservation of the life of the
dock. Please come in under motor.
The E-Board also discovered that the
term originally intended for the Crewing Membership (1 year limit) was never
published in the bylaws when they were amended. The Crewing members from last year will be allowed to renew this
year, due to the mis-communication. The
by laws will be corrected going into the 2004 season. Crewing members joining this year will be made aware of the
upcoming change through written correspondence.
Last reminder.... If you are new to Carter, spring sailing
here means two thing: high, freaky
winds, and freezing cold water.
Please sail safely, ensure all dock lines
are snug, and that your boat's mast is staggered from your neighbors. Thanks.
See you at the lake!
Carrie Pfister

VICE
COMMODORE - RAEGAN MORGAN
Our 44th Open Regatta will be here
before we know it -- May 30-June1. Since
we're one of only a few lakes with
water, we expect a high number of racers
this year --great! We've got a
reputation for hosting a great weekend. Let's
do it again this year! To make
everything go smoothly, I'm counting on club
members to help me with everything
from race committee to registration to set
up/clean up. If there is a job you've
done in the past and would like to do
it again, feel free to e-mail me with
your preference and I'll get you on the
list. If this is your first regatta,
talk to me at dock put in and I'll give
you some insight as to what we do and
where we need help. I'll have the sign
up sheets at the clubhouse on dock put
in day as well. Thank you in advance!
Raegan Morgan

TREASURER -
DENISE MORIARTY
As I reported at the Winter Membership
meeting, the Club is very healthy financially.
The E-Board has worked hard to determine a budget for this year, and I
expect we're going to have a fun time with everything that is planned. As a reminder, please work with
the appropriate committee chair
regarding expenses to be reimbursed.
Receipts should be approved by a committee chair before being sent on to
me. In addition, I would appreciate
clear information about who is to receive the reimbursement, and the address it
should be mailed to. Also, please indicate clearly on the receipt
what the expense is for, and which line item in the budget it should be applied
to.
I'm looking forward to a great season!

JUNIOR SAILING REPORT - DAVID & MARILYN HUGHES
The 2003 Jr. Sailing program is
officially underway. Sail Camp will be running from July 13 -July 19. On July
20th Carter Lake Sail Club will be hosting a Jr. Open Regatta for the first
time. We are excited about trying some new approaches this year. The goal is to
have smaller instructional groups and smaller age ranges within the groups. To
accomplish that we will have two sessions of camp and hopefully two pre-camp
sail days to allow the
Jr. Sailors to "tune-up"
their skills before camp starts. We will publish those pre-camp sail days in
subsequent logs. We have info. and registration sheets printed up and available
through the mail (by contacting Dave and Marilyn) or you can access them on the
web site. Please call or email us if you have questions. We are looking forward
to a great season of Jr. Sailing!
2003
Sail Camp Information

Session B.
2. Session A will run Sunday through Tuesday (July 13-15).
3. Session A will have requirements: Recommended

sails as well as Sunfish.
5. Session B will run Wed. through Fri. (July
16-18) Recommended Age: 10-13,
no experience necessary. Session B will focus on
building and enhancing
basic sailing skills, safety and developing
confidence on the water.
6. Instruction for both sessions will be based on
the Red Cross Small Boat
Sailing Course and require that students pass the
Red Cross swimming test
and written skills test.
7. Jr. Sailors that pass the Jr. instructor
training during Session A will
be asked to assist for at least one day during
Session B.

Membership Chairman,
HISTORIAN -
JACKIE GURLEY
It is a cold and snowy night in late February,
2003, one of those nights that I just wanted to curl up and stay warm. I am half asleep when the phone rings about
8:30pm. Who could be calling? Mike
comes and says, "You won't believe who's on the phone. I think you might be interested." I answer, and it is Jim Muchow,
past-commodore of the club, long-time CLSC friend, and the person who got me
involved in the e-board years ago. He
is moving to South Dakota, and he has several boxes that might be of historical
value to the club. I perk up. What?
"No, Jim, I can't come
tomorrow morning, I work! How can I
get the stuff? I tell you what, I'll be right over." Driving over we are curious--what does he
have? Is this the missing history? We pull up to the house with the U-haul in
the driveway. It is still snowing. We collect
four boxes and say good-bye to our friend. We rush home and rummage
through the boxes. What are they? Handwritten notes dating back to the 1940's
and documents of the start of the Carter Lake Sailing Club.
The missing history. Thank you, Jim, for keeping them safe all
these years, and for passing them on now.
I will be organizing and sharing the
history of our sailing club over the next months. But to begin--
The first regatta at Carter Lake, the
Labor Day Regatta, was held on September 17 and 18, 1954, with nine boats
participating.
The racers "felt like pioneers,
battling that dusty road after leaving #287, no accomodations whatsoever, no
dock, no toilet, the water level only about 35', plenty mud. However, the sailing was wonderful, we had
the lake to ourselves, the farmers of the
surrounding area became our friends
(many of them had never even seen a sailboat before). In spite, or maybe because of, the hardships, we had a wonderful
time."
Nostalgia question of the month:
Where did this group have dinner on Sunday Night after the
Regatta?
E-mail me with your guess--come on,
this is not that hard!!
I continue to gather bits and pieces
from the past of the CLSC history. If
your have, or know of anyone who may have further pieces
to the puzzle, please let me know or
bring them to the workdays ahead.
Thanks,
Jackie Gurley
Now that the excruciatingly long
America’s Cup is over we can all focus on racing in Colorado. I agree with
Gobson’s comment from early in the series. To paraphrase, ‘…7 knots, if we were
in San Diego or the Chesapeake we’d have two or three races finished and be
back at the club!’
PHRF CERTIFICATES all boats
participating in CLSC races should have a current PHRF certificate available
from S.A.I.L., the local administrating group for U.S. Sailing. Go to web site www.rmsail.org
and print out the PHRF application or contact Tom Ruwitch,
tomruwitch@seqnet.net, PHRF committee chairman for S.A.I.L. with questions. If
you don’t have a 2003 certificate you will be scored with your boats lowest
number and not allowed to protest other boats ratings or equipment. Appropriate
scoring is impossible without accurate ratings in PHRF fleets especially with A
fleet ranging from 150s to 190s and B fleet ranging from 200 to 300+.
RACE COMMITTEE VOLUNTEER Thank you to
those that volunteered for race committee duties at the Winter Membership
Meeting. Approximately 20 slots got filled but there are many more. I will be
sending out timely email reminders of volunteer commitments along with updated
schedules. To be scored in any series you must volunteer at least one day in
that series. You will receive your average score for the series for the days
races.
RACE SCHEDULE The race schedule is
posted on the CLSC web site, www.sailcarter.org
Weather permitting; I expect to get
off more races per day. I can’t guarantee any particular number but this will
be a function of a prepared race committee and appropriate courses for
conditions with a more flexible race committee willing to move to a mark and
finish the race if conditions warrant.
CARTER OPEN & CARTER JUNIOR OPEN
Anticipated turnout for these events will be epic. Carter Open may see as many
as 80 boats this year ranging from multihulls to dinghies. To make these events
a success requires good coordination, prior planning and good use of equipment.
I will be coordinating with experienced race officials within and outside the
club to make sure officiating is efficient and fair. I will be calling on those
of you with prior experience with the Carter Open or other major regattas to
give input and help plan the event. Efficient Start/Finish with numerous fleets
requires a Start boat, a Finish boat and a chase boat with experienced people
& good communication. Racers want more than one race a day! The Junior Open
will use the three minute start sequence, (refer to appendix Q of U.S. Sailing
rules). The Junior Open will present its own challenges since this is the first
year we will host the event. To make it consistent from club to club race
committee will include officials form other clubs.
ROOKIE SERIES Thanks again to Tracy
Ireland for his tireless commitment to making this years Rookie Series the best
ever. His work will have lasting value for the club. The CD he created is part
of the Powerpoint presentation Tracy and I have planned for each training
session. The CD will be available to those interested with a small price to
offset the cost of materials. Thanks to those that volunteered as boat coaches
and I will follow up with outline and CD. If you placed first in past rookie
series then join the big boys. Otherwise, anyone is welcome as skipper, crew,
coach or race committee. Crewing members are particularly encouraged to attend.
This course will make you a hot commodity! Your email will be overflowing with
invitations to crew in exotic locations like San Diego, Phoenix, Dallas/Fort
Worth to name a few. If you are single the Rookie Series will make you more
attractive and if you are married then your partner will want you more!

go to starboard"
