PFISTER
It is officially the season!!! The slips went in relatively smoothly, but it
sure was cold out. This year's
bonus? The breakwater was floating!!!
Feel free to launch and slip your
boat. Just a reminder that the winds
are incredibly high in the spring, the water (as of 4.05.03) is 8' short of
full, but it is also a balmy 40 degrees.
Please tie your boats up so that masts are staggered, sail safely, and
ensure you have both current stickers on your boat.
The Homeland Security Act has returned
boating hours to normal. If the security level changes, the hours can become
restricted.
You are required at all times to stay
500 feet away from dams while you are on the water, and 100 feet away while on
land.
This policy is a federal policy, not a
Larimer County one. To check on current
boating hours, you can check on line at:
http://www.co.larimer.co.us/parks/carterconditions.cfm. You can also call the hotline
at: 970.679.4554.
The first potluck of the season is
this Saturday, April 12th at the clubhouse.
It is our Annual Chili Cook-off. Please bring a crock-pot of chili for
the competition. Prizes will be awarded
for the hottest, best appearance and overall best categories.
The potluck is being sponsored by the
Executive Board. They will provide: tortillas, cornbread, sour cream, onions
and cheese. Members with last names
beginning A-L are asked to bring a dessert, M-R a side dish, and S-Z a dessert.
Please bring your own beverages as well.
Appetizers will start at 5pm, and dinner at 6pm. See you there!
Bylaw/Regulation refresher for the
month: If you are not going to put your
boat in a slip for a while, or if during the season you are going to remove it
for a few days, you are required to let the Slip Chairman (Mike Morgan)
know. The slips are monitored daily,
and if one is missing....well, you get the point. To clarify, slips are LEASED by members. If they are not in use, the club can rent
out the slip to members on the waiting list, visiting boats or for the
Regatta. Mike will take care of assigning
boats to the appropriate slips for safety reasons. Please do not change slips or
invite people into slips without notifying him (AdvantageF@aol.com).
See you on the water!

VICE
COMMODORE - RAEGAN MORGAN
Plans for the 44th Annual Carter Lake
Open Regatta (May 30/June1) are moving
along. As I mentioned in previous logs,
the only way we can pull off a race of this magnitude (and still look good!) is
with lots of help from club members. You
certainly don't need to be "race savvy" to help! There is a sign up
sheet on a clipboard in the clubhouse. The next time you're up there, please
see if there is anything you might do to help out. Specifically, I have need of
several more folks to help with Sat. a.m. breakfast, Sat. a.m.
registration, and committee boat help
for both days. Due to drought conditions at other lakes, we anticipate a lot of
racers, and so I'd like to have a larger-than-normal committee boat crew (lunch
is provided both days).
I'm also looking for someone to
spearhead the solicitation and collection of donations/sponsorships and to help
me with food planning and shopping.
Copies of the Notice of Race will be available
at the clubhouse this weekend. If you would like a copy of the Notice of Race
mailed to you, please e-mail me with your request, or call 970-532-1153.
Raegan Morgan

TREASURER -
DENISE MORIARTY
As I reported at the Winter Membership
meeting, the Club is very healthy financially.
The E-Board has worked hard to determine a budget for this year, and I
expect we're going to have a fun time with everything that is planned. As a reminder, please work with
the appropriate committee chair
regarding expenses to be reimbursed.
Receipts should be approved by a committee chair before being sent on to
me. In addition, I would appreciate
clear information about who is to receive the reimbursement, and the address it
should be mailed to. Also, please indicate clearly on the receipt
what the expense is for, and which line item in the budget it should be applied
to.
I'm looking forward to a great season!

JUNIOR SAILING REPORT - DAVID & MARILYN HUGHES
The 2003 Jr. Sailing program is officially
underway. We already have 6 registrations! Keep those registrations
coming! Sail Camp will be running from
July 13 -July 19. On July 20th Carter Lake Sail Club will be hosting a Jr. Open
Regatta for the first time. We are excited about trying some new approaches
this year. The goal is to have smaller instructional groups and smaller age
ranges within the groups. To accomplish that we will have two
sessions of camp and hopefully two
pre-camp sail days to allow the Jr. Sailors to "tune-up" their skills
before camp starts. We will publish those pre-camp sail days in subsequent
logs. We have info. and registration sheets printed up and available through
the mail (by contacting Dave and Marilyn) or you can access them on the web
site. Please call or email us if you have questions. We are looking forward to
a great season of Jr. Sailing!
2003 Sail Camp Information
1.There will be two sessions called
Session A and Session B.
2. Session A will run Sunday through
Tuesday (July 13-15).
3. Session A will have requirements:
Recommended Age: 12-15 and 2 years of previous camp or comparable
experience. If a student does not meet
specific experience requirement they may attend with permission of instructor.
Session A will focus on advanced sailing
skills, racing skills and Jr. Instructor training for those sailors who are
interested.
4. Session A will be using boats with
main and jib sails as well as Sunfish.
5. Session B will run Wed. through Fri.
(July 16-18) Recommended Age: 10-13, no experience necessary. Session B will
focus on building and enhancing basic sailing skills, safety and developing
confidence on the water.
6. Instruction for both sessions will
be based on the Red Cross Small Boat Sailing Course and require that students
pass the Red Cross swimming test and written skills test.
7. Jr. Sailors that pass the Jr.
instructor training during Session A will be asked to assist for at least one
day during Session B.
8. July 19th will be a practice day (in
camp) regatta for all the Jr. Sailors and all levels. Awards will be presented on Saturday July 19th.
9. Cost for each session will be
$150.00 for Jr. Sailors whose families are already club members and $225.00 for
Jr. Sailors who are not. The $225.00 includes a one-year crewing membership.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT -
SHIRLEY CONNALLY
We now have 79 members for 2003. 5 of those are crewing members (3 new ones!)
and 4 are corresponding members. And 5
of those are new regular members. The slips
and campsites are all assigned and have waiting lists. But we do still have 3 Sunfish slots
available, so if you are interested in one of those, be sure to contact
me. The fee is $50 for the season.
For you racers out there, the
returning crewing members are John Gramsas
(720) 887-3630 and Heather Krebs kiana454@earthlink.net
The new crewing members and their
experience:
Blake & Katherine Ives ives@spot.colorado.edu
“Blake - ASA Keel Boat and Coastal
Cruising certificates from Terry Killian
Two separate days of sailing Anaxamander, Summer 2002;
Beginning sailing class, Sunfish, Boulder Res, 2001 (Boulder Rec class); Cal 20
(Intermediate Sailing), Boulder Res, 2001 (Boulder Rec class); 10 hours solo on
Sunfish; 20 hours sailing on O'Day
Daysailer (17'), Boulder Res.
Kathy - ASA Keel Boat and Coastal
Cruising certificates from Terry Killian . Two separate days of sailing
Anaxamander, Summer 2002; 10 hours sailing on O'Day Daysailer (17'), Boulder
Res.
Blake would like to gain general
experience on various sailboats, and get experience sailing in competitions.
He’d like exposure to different boats
to assist in future purchase. And he
wants to have fun! Kathy’s goal is to
have fun and gain experience. Blake will be the more pro-active, and is willing
to take on most challenges with the proper guidance and assistance. Kathy may or may not attend, depending on
her schedule.”
Ron Ritchie ritchron@aol.com Here’s
what Ron says about his sailing experience:
“I've sailed small boats- Holders and Sunfish mostly - now and again for
some years. I've had some instruction
aboard some slightly larger boats (20 and 35 footers), but never spent very
much time with those. I've never done
any racing. What I'd like to gain from
crewing is getting back on the water again (it's been a couple years now),
learning a bit about racing and generally improving my overall sailing skills.”
Helen Zeitlin (303) 467-1274 Helen has had the performance class at J World and has taken
sailing at Victoria Sailing and done a week sailing flotation at Annapolis
Sailing School.
So if anyone needs crew for this
weekend’s race, be sure to call one of the above. An announcement by race committee for available crew will be
made before the committee boat leaves the dock this weekend, so if any of you
crewing members are interested in maybe getting to crew, come on down.

If you are planning on parking your
boat trailer at the Clubhouse and have not yet notified me that you are going to--either
by signing the log at the clubhouse or email--please be sure to do so
ASAP. Each trailer is required to have
one of our ID tags. The ones I already
know about will have tags at the Clubhouse this weekend, so be sure to stop in
and pick up your tag and get it on your trailer.

HISTORIAN -
JACKIE GURLEY
It seems we have a birthday to
celebrate!
August 20, 1953: The first official meeting of the thirteen
charter members to organize the Denver Sailing Club. They paid dues of $1.00 each, elected officers and adopted
by-laws.
As I read the earliest history
documents, it became apparent that the roots of the Carter Lake Sailing Club
went far deeper than thought, and that 2003 marks the fiftieth anniversary of
the organization. At our dock workday,
everyone I spoke with agreed that we must mark celebrate our history and our heritage. What better way than a “Celebrating Fifty
Years” party this summer!
We have scheduled Sunday, August 16,
2003, as the date, but need ideas and volunteer time from all club
members. Some ideas so far include
inviting all past members we can locate, having opportunity to sail and/or race,
displays of memorabilia, sharing of stories, and of course, food and drink,
with a champagne toast. We also hope to
produce a “Celebrating Fifty Years” T-shirt and decal, and a brochure that
includes a brief history of the club.
We need club members to help to make
this celebration a fitting tribute! If
you are interested in helping, please meet to help plan on April 26, 2003 at
4:00 before the potluck. It will take
many club members volunteering in many capacities to help make this
happen. If you cannot attend this
meeting but are interested in helping, let me know.
I appreciate the interest and
encouragement I’ve received from club members on this entire historical
project, especially Lynn Kieser. Lynn
and Bill joined in 1956 and are rich resources of knowledge about the
club. I also thank Mike, who is always
encouraging and ready to listen to and appreciate the stories and anecdotes I
have uncovered in my reading.
In the past few months, I have
organized and read documents and logs through 1983. We have pretty complete history for all years except
1960-63. The most enjoyable has been
the original history written by the first club secretary, Emmy Koehler, in 1960. Her handwritten secretary log goes back to
August 20, 1953, and she is very detailed and formal in her accounts of “lively
discussions”, club planning, and of course, meeting refreshments. Over the next few months, I would like to
share the original history that Emmy wrote in 1960 in her words.
“THE FIRST SEVEN-YEAR CYCLE OF THE DENVER SAILING CLUB, INC.”
Before
the Second World War, only a few individuals sailed on Sloans Lake in Denver,
among them our own charter member George Seeman. In the 1930’s the City of Denver decided to build a boats house
with WPA labor in the hope of encouraging more boating. It did boost the interest and, restricted
through the gas shortage during the war, many people took to sailing.
All
watersport’s lovers were united in the Mile High Boats Association; joint meetings but separate activities. Up to the spring of 1946 the sailors often
were in the majority; it was not at all unusual to have twenty boats during a
Sunday race. Slowly, however, the
picture changed; by the end of the 1940’s we separated from this club and
formed our own, but loose, organization.
That it became never more than that was due to many factors. Finally, through the many rules and
regulations imposed by the city the sailors were being penalized and
representation at the city’s Boating Commission deemed necessary. By the spring of 1953, Otto Koehler urged
all sailors to unite as only by united force anything could be
accomplished. Preliminary meetings were
held, the first by-laws drawn up, etc.
On
August 20, 1953, the first official meeting of the Denver Sailing Club was
held. 13 members were present paying
dues of $1.00 each. Officers were
elected and the proposed by-laws adapted.
Of those first charter members still claiming a consecutive membership
today are: Emmy and Otto Koehler, Jean
and George Seeman, Piet Hondius, and Don Hillis.
The
Labor Day weekend of 1953 was spent on Shadow Mountain Lake; 4 boats and 11
members participated. The sailing was
wonderful and the fellowship excellent.
By the end of September, the membership had grown to 26. The attendance during the winter was about
75%; the topics of the discussions centered around the acquisition of trophies,
pennants for the boats, racing, and general plans for the future.
These
plans soon included Carter Lake. Otto
Koehler had broached this subject for the first time after learning that this
reservoir would be half full by summertime.
He emphasized our chance of leasing a lot from the government and the
possibility of building a clubhouse there.
The opposition to this plan dropped in exact proportion to the sinking
water level at Sloans Lake which reached the zero level for sailing by the end
of July, 1954.
To be continued!
Congratulations to Brian Jones for answering last month’s
Nostalgia question correctly: After the first Regatta at Carter Lake in
1954, the group had dinner at the Wayside Inn in Berthoud.
This month’s nostalgia question: Into the 1990’s: Many
members remember the fondly used term “Muchowhenge”. To what does this term apply?
Jackie Gurley
Thanks to Steve Johnson the committee
boat has been launched and properly tested. The new prop and other work by
Jerry at The Anchorage allows the Bayliner to get up and boogie. Proper
winterization sure makes the job in the spring easy. Jon Bockelman assisted
with setting marks on Saturday, 04/05, beating the predicted Sunday storm.
There may be a little tweaking of placements required but we went off GPS
coordinates from Tom Ruwitch’s gizmo to get it as close as possible.
Spring Series is upon us! SI’s are
prepared along with copies of PHRF fleet rules, protest forms and maps of
Carter Lake which will be stocked on the committee boat. County ‘No Wake’ buoys
aren’t set yet so inflatables may be used for #7 and #5 in the interim. Yes,
that’s right the return of #5 set across from #3 but not too deep south. It’s
hoped that the proper use of #5 by Race Committee will give use more
flexibility towards setting windward/leeward courses with #1 as the windward
mark. Let’s not sail, or should I say drift, to #6 more than we have to.
Thanks to everyone that volunteered
for race committee for the Spring Series. You shall receive your reward of
gracious kindness from the racers and much good cheer at the potluck. Committee
volunteers, as thoroughly noted in the SI’s, shall receive scoring for the
races they administer. There are still many gaps in upcoming series to be filled
by volunteers but it’s a great start. As many of you know I come to every event
with a roster so there is never a missed opportunity to sign up. Also find the
current list along with this log.
Tom Ruwitch will be at the Lake on
Saturday, 04/12 and possibly Sunday, 04/13 prior to the races to bestow PHRF
certificates to those with $20. The fee includes membership to SAIL with its
workshops, seminars, support of junior sailing and assistance for race
committees in the area. If you don’t have a current PHRF certificate your boat
will be scored with the lowest number I can find for your boat in the
continental United States.
The Rookie Series is shaping up. I
usually carry several copies of the Training CD with me that you can make yours
with $6. It is well worth the money for anyone new to skippering or crewing.
With the use of more boat coaches, printed material and other presentations
this year I need to know how many sailors and how many boats for proper
planning.

another nuisance’
