FROM THE EDITOR- LANA LOHE
We
have begun the women's sailing days again.
It was very nice weather on Sat. June 7th for our first
outing. Thanks to those brave women who
showed up to sail. I would like to put
some weeknights on the calendar to for those of you that might have your
weekends full of other activities or work.
Here are some dates for June
and July.
Tuesday,
6/17 5-8pm Saturday, 7/19 11-3pm
Wednesday,
6/25 5-8pm Tuesday, 7/22 5-8pm
Tuesday,
7/1 5-8pm Wednesday, 7/30 5-8pm
Thursday,
7/10 5-8pm
I
will send out a reminder on the Sunday before each date to see who can
come. Bring a girlfriend with you and
let's get everyone out sailing this summer.
Please
be sure to let me know if you have an email or mailing address change. I will make sure it gets to the other board
members.
Lana Lohe
"I find the great thing in this
world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving: To
reach the port of heaven, we must sail sometimes
with the wind and sometimes
against it-but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie
at anchor."

The
CLSC is up and running full blast. The
Regatta was an incredible hit. A big
thanks to: Raegan Morgan for planning and hosting the event, to Michael and
Denise McMillan for catering the incredible dinner Saturday night, to Tom
Ruwitch for running a smooth race, Junior Sailing for the Sunday breakfast,
Jeff Gruver for photos...and to everyone who helped and donated their
time. The club turn out was incredible.
The
potlucks, Rookie Series and regular races have been busier than ever. Thanks for the great themes and planning.
The energy has been incredible.
Guideline
refresher for the month: The slips/dinghy storage and campsites are items that
you LEASE from the club. They are not
your personal property. PLEASE do not give your site/slip to someone else
without notifying the proper Committee Chairman and getting approval to do
so. Please also make them aware of when
you will be removing your boat/camper, even if it just for a few days. We do monitor these sites, as does the
county and Don from the marina. Rental
charges may apply. This has happened a
few times over the last few regattas and disrupts the planning and facilities
that we offer to registrants. Also,
because they are leased, do not permanently attach anything to the club grounds
and facilities.
We
have brought this issue up before, and it is still happening. Please do not risk a membership in good standing
by not following the bylaws.
There
are tons of new events and activities planned for the summer. Please take the time to read through the
entire log, and mark your calendars!
And
finally: Coming this summer to Carter Lake, a new one day Race: The Commodore's
Cup. Details will be announced soon.

VICE
COMMODORE - RAEGAN MORGAN
The
Regatta was a HUGE success! I would like to give a big "thank you" to
all the clubmembers who helped make it so great -- I couldn't have pulled it
off without you. We had approximately 40 boats in 7 fleets. There was no wind,
light wind, strong wind and "break your mast" wind (my condolences to
Jon Bockleman); fog, rain and sunshine, lots of wonderful food; and the great
camaraderie
at the
clubhouse that makes the regatta the highlight of the season in my book.
A
reminder to clubmembers: if you took out an IOU for shirts or dinners this
weekend, please pay up as soon as possible. Thanks!
Now, I
think I'll sit back and enjoy the rest of the season and do some sailing!

JUNIOR SAILING REPORT - DAVID
& MARILYN HUGHES
David, Marilyn,
Ivan and Jim are in the midst of planning the 2003 Jr. Sailing Camp. But the
Jr. Program is really already running. Five of our Jr. Sailors participated in
the Carter Open Regatta: Avana Andrade, Gavin Jacobs, Mackenzie Jacobs, Megan
Johnson and Mike Ruwitch. Mike, Gavin and
Megan took home
trophies and they all braved the wild winds and had fun too. In addition, Jr.
Sailing provided the Sunday morning complimentary breakfast at the Regatta and
will receive $160.00 from the Regatta registrations from the club. Thanks for
all the support. Jr. Sailing also got an extra $35.00 of donations at the
breakfast. Those home baked muffins were good!
We are planning two PRE-CAMP SAIL DAYS to
help juniors tune up their skills before camp starts: SUNDAY JUNE 22 AND 29TH.
Please contact Dave and Marilyn if you are planning to attend. Meet at the
dinghy dock at noon. We will have adult supervision available. The club sunfish
and the dock box will be on the dinghy dock by June 14th. If you want to sail before the pre
camp days grab
a helpful adult and come practice!!
If you are planning to come to sail camp and
have talked to the committee chairs or instructors; PLEASE SEND IN YOUR
REGISTRATIONS and checks AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. (The deadline is June 12th) Sail
Camp will be running from July 13 -July 19. On July 20th Carter Lake Sail Club
will be hosting a Jr. Open Regatta for the first time. We are excited about
trying some new approaches this year. The goal is to have smaller instructional
groups and smaller age ranges within the groups. To accomplish that we will
have two sessions of camp and two pre-camp sail days to allow the Jr.
Sailors to
"tune-up" their skills before camp starts. We have info. and
registration sheets printed up and available through the mail (by contacting
Dave and Marilyn) or you can access them on the web site. Please call or e-mail
us if you have questions. We are looking forward to a great season of
Jr. Sailing!
VOLUNTEER
OPPORTUNITES
If you have a
sunfish that you are willing to lend Jr. Sailing during the week of camp we
would appreciate it. Please let Dave or Marilyn know. We also need campers,
trailers and/or tents. Let us know if you have anything to lend to the program.
Thanks in advance. WE ALSO NEED NIGHT SUPERVISORS-If you can help supervise at
night on the evenings of Sunday, Monday or Tuesday
July 13, 14, 15
or Wed. Thurs. or Fri. nights July 16, 17 or 18th let us know. (If you like to
sleep on your boat and have room for kids too that's another possibility.)

MEMBERSHIP REPORT -
SHIRLEY CONNALLY
Please
welcome new crewing members Harry & Beth Hemstreet of Loveland. Their email addresses are
hhemstreet@hemko.com and bethhemstreet@hotmail.com. Harry recently completed Basic Keelboat certification at J-World
in San Diego. By joining CLSC, they
hope to gain sailing experience, learn about different boats, and to try
racing. They eventually want to get
additional certifications.
Please
add Chris Roark to your membership roster.
He has just rejoined for this year and his email address is
rcr_03@indra.com. He usually races with
Ken Owens, but is interested in crewing
for others when Ken isn't racing.
Please email me if you want his full information for your roster
(address, boat name, etc.)
The
Yachting Club of America cards have finally arrived. They will be up at the clubhouse so be sure to pick one up when
you are there. They will be either on
the table below the Potluck sign-up board or over in the badge rack on the far
wall in the clubhouse.
You
will need to fill in your own name and our club name on the cards. We have enough for one card per membership,
not per person. Our YCA club number and
password are listed on the back of your Carter Lake Sailing Club membership
card. The web address is
http://www.ycaol.com if you want to check out other clubs with reciprocity. All letters in the password and id are lower
case. Be sure to include the word
"club" when entering the ID.
YCA is
a really nifty benefit of membership in CLSC.
Stan and I used it when we went to Lake Minnetonka in Minneapolis 2
years ago, and they let us have a slip and use of their clubhouse for a full
week, no charge. I know others in the
club have used it too, so
be
sure to check out the website for reciprocal sites if you are traveling. Some of them have really nice clubhouses and
fine restaurants that reciprocity would gain you admittance to even though you
are a non-member.
We
have two slips left on the Sunfish docks, but there was interest expressed in
them during the Open this last weekend.
So if you are considering one, be sure to get your money in right away
so you don't miss out. They are first
come (paid), first served. Rental
is $50
per season.
The
combinations on the locks at the clubhouse and the slips are being
changed. The new number is the 2nd one
listed on the back of your CLSC membership card, so be prepared.

HISTORIAN -
JACKIE GURLEY
For the Regatta, we had a display board that began to share some of
our history and information about our “Celebrating 50 Years” upcoming
celebration. I wasn’t able to be at the
Regatta this year, but I hope the display generated some interest in our
event. I will leave the display in the
clubhouse in case members haven’t had a chance to look at it.
Carrie, Reagen and Lynn helped check old membership rosters to help
us invite as many former members as possible.
Lynn has developed a “can’t find” list, so please be sure to check it
out to help us find and invite as many former members as possible.
We have “Celebrating 50 Years” T-shirts on sale for $10. I will be at potlucks in June so you can buy
them then. We have also ordered
stickers with the CLSC Celebrating 50 Years logo for boats, bumpers, where ever
your want to use them. We hope to have
them soon.
Thanks again for your ideas and positive feedback. Please send me your thoughts on how we can
make this a grand time. We’ll begin
asking for volunteers to help with the day soon.
Last month, in Part II of Emmy Koehler’s original history of the
Denver Sailing, we ended in 1954 with the question, “But what about the
promised clubhouse?”
At first, the Recreation Dept. of Larimer County had allotted us
ground on the East Side of the road leading to the shaft house, with rights
extending clear to the shoreline.
Later, the U.S. Forest Service
objected to this as every citizen has the right to every foot of the
shore. In the end, we obtained the 2
acres we have now on the West Side of the road with our promise to build a
clubhouse later.
In the
annals of this club, the story of the sunken little liver pill will be well
remembered, also the friendly kidding Otto Koehler had to endure for a long
time. Noted in the minute book:
“How
Otto did it exactly is still a mystery, but he did it. He was late for a race; his boat, under
sail, got somehow entangled with the lines of the dinghy, the buoy, and
whatever else there was. It was windy,
he was in a hurry; but while he and his female crew was working feverishly to
get free, the wind decided that that was enough of the foolishness. So, the boat sailed across the lake with the
dinghy, buoy and about 250 pounds of weight.
We, on shore, watched the struggle with interest until suddenly “Six
Chips” sailed free of all the ballast.
But where could that ballast be?
You guessed it—at the bottom of the lake. The dinghy had seemingly filled with water, the weight had
snapped the line, and everything went under.
Otto tried to resurrect it the following weekend with the help of a
motorboat, but it preferred the deep, deep water.
It was
inconvenient without our “Liver Pill”; some had to take to swimming and here
and there I heard a slight cursing.
However, never give up hope, our dinghy hadn’t quite deserted us, three
weeks later it was lying on the beach, a little bit more weathered and slightly
peeled, but still serviceable. Good old
“Carter’s Little Liver Pill”, may it live forever.”
Another
item from the record book reads:
“On
August 14, a little tornado must have struck the lake, strangely enough at
about the same time as it had struck at Sloans last year. Six boats were turned over then, and six
were not. No serious damage was done
thanks to the quick action of the concessionaire who righted the boats as soon
as he dared to be on the water. He
claimed the waves were 6’ high, his own dock and many boats lying on shore were
overturned and windows at his stand were blown in. Quite a blow!”
But the
year 1955 was not yet over. Some of the
top men of the Big Thompson Project (of which Carter Lake is a part) decided
that some valves had to be checked or repaired. In order to do this, the water was let our to 5’ below dead water
level (the later is below the out- or inlet).
This time we were really down, below the inlet cement structure. We used to anchor our boats on it and had a
grand time hollering into the cavernous mouth of the tunnel.
1955
had been a crucial and decisive year for us.
In spite of all happenings, the members finally decided to stay at
Carter. We had passed all trials
successfully; in fact, they made us stronger than before, we knew now what we
wanted. Strangely enough, the following
years passed without any great incidents, but with increased planning.
Nostalgia
Question:
No one
responded to the question—it must have been a tough one!! The dinghy was nicknamed “Little Liver Pill”
and was referred to in this history as “Carter’s Little Liver Pill”—get
it—Carter Lake? Carter’s Little Liver
Pill was an over the counter pill the “purged the liver.” I remember hearing about it when I was
little, so it must have been available in the 1950’s. Our club ancestors were playing on this when they named the
dinghy.
This
month’s question:
In
1955, the club had three perpetual trophies.
Name any one of them.
Good
Luck guessing!!
Jackie
Gurley
Everyone should
read rule 69 in U.S. Sailing and thoroughly understand what it means. This rule
is the heart of everything good about sailing and it’s intent is to put some
teeth into the remainder of the rules.
Rookie Series is
going great. There is a boat with a few juniors on it that could very well
spell trouble for all you other experienced racers. Excitement and anticipation
for the next Rookie Race is in the air
and everyone involved is learning a tremendous amount. The boat coaching and classroom time seems to be effective. If
you don’t have a training CD please get a hold of me at the next Potluck or
race event. They’re $5 and all the money goes to the Junior program.
The
spring series, Columbia Cup, and the Carter Open results are posted on our
website under races and regatta's.
The
Rusty Nail is an excuse
for an all out water fight. 5 minute start sequence followed by a beat to the
first mark. All competitors wait at the first mark until the last one gets
there and blast them with water. Mayhem issues at each mark with broadside
battles, luffing contests, boats in irons taking a pummeling from both sides.
Any time a skipper is hit with water from another boat then he must perform a
360. So you have to bring protection as well as max firepower.
Beware of pirates
with large pumps strapped to the foredeck.!! AARGH!! Umbrellas are collapsed
under the tremendous onslaught of 150 gallons per minute from these pumps but
they have limited range. Is lack of range a chink in the pirate's game plan? Or
will the pirates return with more range or maybe more water cannons from one
pump? Is one pump a weakness? Can the pump be soaked and extinguished? For more
details ask a survivor of last years event.
The Blender Boat Challenge highlights the more important skills associated with sailing: preparing good food and tasty nonalcoholic blenderized beverages while sailing. Costume and attitude will only help your score. I have enlisted the assistance of two of the clubs renowned experts in the art of blenderizing, Lana Lohe & Jan Morgan to create an overall theme and scoring system.
Nothing can be loved or
hated unless it is first known.

The social committee thanks everyone who has volunteered to host
potlucks through the sailing season! If
you have signed up, Please be sure to contact Lana Lohe at lohe@earthlink.net
with your theme information and briefly please describe what you as hosts are
providing and what members should bring.
Details need to be in her hands, incluing reconfirming the date, by the
last

Denise Moriarty, and that our budget can cover up to $75. per potluck. Please do not hesitate to call on Todd or
Nina if you have questions or need assistance with anything as you plan your
potluck details.
The annual banquet plans for our 50th year are developing, with
Ammons Hall reserved on the CSU campus.
This location has easy access, and close-in parking. Ammons is on the
national historic registry and will afford us an elegant setting for this very

to mark your calendars for November 15th! Ammons does not have a liquor license, so members are to bring
their own beverages (spirits or otherwise) and we will have a set-up arranged
for mixes and everything else you need.
This process will also be cost savings to us all.
The Salty Dogs are joining us for a potluck in July - details will
