have your weekends full of other activities or work.
Here are some dates for July. Hope to see you at the committee boat.

Saturday,
7/19 11-3pm
(same day as Jr. Sail Race)
Tuesday, 7/22

I
will send out a reminder on the Sunday before each date to see who can
attend. Bring a girlfriend with you and
let's get everyone out sailing this summer.
Please
be sure to let me know if you have an email or mailing address change. I will make sure it gets to the other board
members.

fast is easier ashore than it is afloat because there is no
time to stop and think when you are
racing."

PFISTER
I
was helping with the Rookie Series a few weeks ago, and just need to let people
know that this is a great learning tool to participate in....the seminars are
great, and the boats have had coaches and crews provided if needed. Please stop
by if you haven't yet. Great job Ivan,
Tracy and help!!
Please
make sure you are aware of work hours....
the clubhouse has tons of things that need to be done, and the Jr. Sail
Camp can always use help....
We
have had lots of new member interest lately as well as crewing members
converting to full members. Please make
yourself available to these new members with your knowledge of both the lake
and the club as well as your sailing skills.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
I
received a note from the Aspen Yacht Club....all is good to go for their July
Regatta. Water and launching is fine.
Here's
to a windy July!

CLUB
HISTORIAN - JACKIE GURLEY
Update on the “Celebrating 50
Years Event”:
HELPERS NEEDED! Lynn, Carrie and Reagen have helped put
together a past and present membership list.
We need help addressing invitations to the event. Please plan to help us before the potluck on
July 12, 4:00, on the deck. We hope to
get all the invitations in the mail at this time and we are asking people to
let us know if they plan to attend.
50TH EVENT FOOD AND
VOLUNTEER SIGN UP: Beginning July 12, I
will have a sign up sheet, much like the one for the Regatta, where I will ask
current members to commit to a side dish for the celebration and to help set up
and host different parts of the event.
I will be making BBQ Brisket sandwiches, but we will need side dishes,
salads, and munchies for the dock party/Parade of Boats. We are asking people to sign up so we have a
good idea of how much food and help we will have.
T-SHIRT SALES: We still have “Celebrating 50 Years”
t-shirts available for $10. Proceeds
from these sales will help us provide some plaques to recognize life-time
members and past commodores. I will
have shirts available a every potluck.
MEMORABILIA
AND MEMORIES: We hope to have a VCR
set up at the celebration so that past and present members can share a memory
of the Sailing Club. We also ask that
anyone having photographs and/or memorabilia please bring and share those items
with us for the day.
CELEBRATION
DAY SCHEDULE:
Ø
12:00--Gather
on docks to meet and greet past members, munchies on dock.
Ø
2:00—Parade
of Boats, with current members hosting past members on a short trip.
Ø
Sailing
as requested throughout the afternoon.
Ø
4:00—Current
members host potluck at clubhouse. Club
will provide beverages, BBQ Beef Sandwiches, and Celebration cakes. Current members will bring a salad, side
dish, or munchies.
Ø
Memorabilia
and Memories at the Clubhouse.
Ø
6:00—Short
“Celebrating 50 Years” presentation.
We will need a strong representation of current members to make
this all work! Please plan on helping
us make this a memorable day!
General Historian Update:
I am currently completing a set of
Logs from 1963 to the present out of the four large boxes of “stuff’ I have
collected. I hope to have the complete
set on display for the 50th Celebration. They make for interesting reading—and the more I read the more I
realize that as things change, but they stay the same. So many of the concerns and celebrations
throughout the years are repeated.
My future plans, after the big
“to-do” in August, include tracing many “strands” of information throughout the
years, including history of trophies and races, junior sailing, clubhouse,
moorings and docks, social events, different types of memberships, and
traditions of the club.
Nostalgia Question:
No
one responded to the nostalgia question, “In 1955 the club had three perpetual
trophies. Name any one of them.”!
Perhaps
this is because all three of the trophies in 1955 are no longer around. In
1955, these three trophies existed:
By 1960, a few more trophies
had been added:
One
thing that is not apparent in the Logs is what happened to these trophies—how
they were lost or replaced. Perhaps
some of our guests on August 16th will have information on
this!
This
report has gone on long enough, and so I will hold on Part IV of Emmie
Koehler’s original history until next month.
The history and traditions of the Carter Lake Sailing Club are an
irreplaceable treasure to celebrate and preserve. Thanks in advance for the support you have given for this project
and will give for the 50th celebration.
Jackie
Gurley
There
is continued discussion regarding the use of hands and feet to exert any
pressure on the headsail sheet in front of the jib block. The U.S. Sailing rule
50.3(a) states no sail shall be sheeted over or through an outrigger, except as
permitted in rule 50.3(b). An outrigger is any fitting or other device so placed that it could exert outward
pressure on a sheet or sail at a point from which, with the boat upright,
a vertical line would fall outside the hull or deck planking. Is a human hand,
arm, foot or leg to be considered a fitting or other device ? The
answer to that question is in the appeals book which is on the Committee Boat,
Big Yellow Note Book or available on line at the U.S. Sailing web site.
There
is a fleet of RC Lasers at Carter Lake. As Race Committee Chairman I would like
to begin holding events for this new fleet from the courtesy dock within the
breakwater . Jeff Gruver has acquired a starting sequence CD and race committee
will come up with marks. This is a strict one design fleet, no messing around
allowed, no sanding, no fairing, no painting, you get what you get. Anyone
interested in trying out armchair sailing from the comfort of the docks,
contact me and I’ll get you hooked up with someone from the fleet.
YOU CAN LIVE IN YOUR BOAT BUT YOU
CAN’T SAIL YOUR HOUSE.
