Can
you believe that it is August already?
As
always there is lots going on.... Raft Up Movie Night,
the Fall Racing Series and CLSC's 50th Anniversary are just around the
corner. Please read through the entire
log for details.
Please
make sure to read through the Historical Committee report. Make sure you RSVP
for the anniversary party, ASAP.
This
is a full day event on August 16th, and we need lots of help to make this a
success. To open the days
events, I will be hosting the "Parade of Boats". We are looking for a majority of the club
boats to motor-sail around the lake (decorations are optional). Interested?
Please let me know at sailing841@aol.com, or call 303.457.3839. We will also need a few boats to take
previous club and crewing members aboard.
I
have had a few members complaining about dogs at the clubhouse. Just fyi... the
bylaws prohibit animals on the deck or in the clubhouse. They are only allowed on the docks and must
be on a leash at all times. Thanks for
your consideration.
Please
pencil in a new event this year... The Commodore's Cup. It will be a one day race starting
mid-morning on September 13th. Sailing
instructions will post in the September log.
The race will require a minimum crew of 3, all of which must be from
your family. If you don't have 3, or
your children have other plans for the day, you may substitute a Junior Sailor,
or Crewing Member. Interested in joining
me on the Committee Boat for the Race?
Just let me know!
On a
personal note, a big thanks to CLSC for their gratious donations to the Volvo
Leukemia Cup Regatta held at Chatfield Reservoir at the end of July. SPLASH was
once again the top fundraiser with just under $8000. CLSC had people on 5+ boats, all of which
placed in the race. Your support is more
than appreciated.
See
you at the Parade of Boats on August 16th!

VICE
COMMODORE - RAEGAN MORGAN
July is
typically my least-favorite month of the year, but sailing has given me a way
to enjoy the hot summer months. One of the July highlights this year was Jr.
Sailing Camp. Our oldest kiddo went to camp for the first time, and Lance and I
spent most of the week helping out in one way or another. What a hoot! If you are
looking for a fun way to earn some club hours, keep camp in mind for next year
-- it's great fun.
I've always thought of August as the "downhill leg" into fall,
which in my opinion is the very best time to be out on the lake. But dock pull
out always comes too soon. I look forward to lots of reading and relaxing on
Wind Shadow in the precious little time we have left! See you at the lake!
"A
sailboat is built to float, and then its keel is weighted so it floats less.
Floating is not enough. Too light and a ship is not right with wind; too heavy
and a ship is not right with sea. For a special rightness with the world, both
lightness and heaviness are needed."

JUNIOR SAILING REPORT - DAVID
& MARILYN HUGHES
Wow! We had a
lot of fun at our two sail camps. The kids worked hard, played hard and sailed,
sailed, sailed! If you¹ve never seen kids learn to sail mark it on your
calendar to come out and watch next year. It is great fun to see the kid¹s
progress.
The two session
format seemed to work quite well. We had 14 Jr. Sailors and one Jr. Instructor
(Mike Ruwitch) at the A session July 13-15th and 13 Jr. Sailors at the B
session July 16-18th,
Three newly
graduated Jr. Instructors joined Mike to assist at the B camp.
They were: Megan
Johnson, Avana Andrade and Mackenzie Jacobs. The Jr. Instructors worked hard
and did a good job of teaching the basics to our B camp sailors.
The camp regattas were really amazing. The B session sailors met
Saturday morning July 19th and had a crowd on the beach to help cheer them on.
The A session sailors ran into rough weather at 1:00pm so we postponed up at
the clubhouse with an ice cream social and awards for B camp. Around
some great pictures. All the kids raced on
sloop rigged dinghies with skipper and crew of one, two or three. All the A
group looked very experienced out there!
Results of the
B Fleet
1st Parker

2nd Ben Lewis( new jr. crewing member) and Parker Owens

Rounding out
the fleet were:

Caitlin Owens

They
all deserve a hand for their performance!

We had lots of
volunteers to help with the photos, crafts, night sails, night supervision,
meals, tents, campers, slips and the boats. Thanks again to all the club
members (44 in all) who helped make this year¹s camp such a good experience and
special thanks to Ivan Andrade and Jim Jacobs who volunteered their time as
instructors and worked tirelessly to make sure the "on the water"
instruction was the best it could be. Also this year Eileen Winans helped us
with "on the water" instruction for the B session. Welcome Eileen!
In addition,
Floyd Harrison took lots of great digital pictures (@200) that he has compiled
on a CD. It is for sale for $5. He also has a video tape of camp for $7.50.
Please contact Dave and Marilyn if you are interested in ordering either the CD
or the Video.

Last but not
least, Jr. Sailing is selling tank tops and boat bags for a fundraiser. We will
have the bags, tank tops and filled orders at the next potluck on Aug. 9th. If
you already have a bag or tank top that you need to pay for please send your

SLIPS COMMITTEE REPORT -
MIKE MORGAN
Everything
seems to be going pretty well this season, at least we
have not had any demastings so far this year. There are a few things that we
need done on the slips for anyone needing work hours. Some rub rails need to be
reattached on the North slips and a couple of boards need replaced on the mains
of the South slips.
I have noticed
that members have been leaving the gates open on the slips. We need to make
sure that the gates are closed behind you at all times.
Now that the
water is warm we will be having a work day this month to repair the breaks in
the break water and to install more foam jugs. I will send out an e-mail on
what weekend we will be doing this.

CLUBHOUSE COMMITTEE REPORT - DALE QUAKENBUSH
The club house served well during the
sail camp. It was a great camp with outstanding racing by the young sailors at
the regatta and last weekend during the series racing. They look like pros.
There is getting to be a pretty long
list of work to be done on the clubhouse before the 50th on the 16th of
August. So we have scheduled a work day on Sunday August the 10th. I am
racing that day so I can line people out early and work late if needed. I
encourage anyone to work at other times if available. Let me know so I know
what is getting done.
There are 30+ old club members coming
to our 50th celebration , so it would be
good if the club house look good.
The benches and tables need to be spot
sanded and touch up painted. This would be best if someone could do it during
the week so we aren't pot lucking on wet paint. The deck needs a good cleaning
again too. A general cleaning and organization in the
cabinets and in side around the furniture. Repair posts and ropes around
the parking lot and clubhouse. Can
anyone splice large ropes?
Mowing and trimming the grounds. The
club trimmer and mower wasn't working before sail camp
so a repair or one from home would work.
Ivan has been cleaning and organizing
around the storage area so many thanks to him. I think he is also my mystery
storage room cleaner.
a good wash down of the out house is in order. I will get it pumped
the week before.
the beer frig died and we have a new
one donated by Carrie but need to swap it for the brown one in the club house
and convert the brown one to a new beer frig.
We only had 1 person show on time and
3 or 4 later at the work day before the sail camp. Some more help would be
nice.
We are only permitted to have two
small boats on trailers for the jr. sailors above the
club house. We need to remove all but two.
