FROM THE EDITOR- LANA LOHE

I along with many others developed a computer virus on our home computer.  It’s been down for 2 weeks while we’ve been trying to save our data to a new hard drive.  I’m still working on re typing all the email addresses as we lost all them.  So I apologize if I have not responded to your emails.  It should be all fixed by the weekend.(I’m sure just in time for the next set of virus worms to hit!!)

Please be sure to let me know if you have an email or mailing address change.  I will make sure it gets to the other board members.

FROM THE COMMODORE - CARRIE PFISTER

Well the heat has finally subsided, and it is starting to feel like fall.  Good winds, but it gets dark quick.  With all of our concerns last year about water levels, it looks like things will hold, and the season will be a normal one.

This Saturday  (the 13th) is a new race.....  The Commodore's Cup.  I will be hosting the event (imagine that).  Skipper's Meeting will be at 9:15, with Sailing Instructions that are specific to this race, so be sure to attend.  First start will be at 10:30am.  Please be aware of the following: Crew must consist of a minimum of 3 people, all members of your family.  If you are short the minimum, you can recruit a Junior Sailor, or a Crewing Member.  If you need crew, please contact me, and I will help you fill your boat.  The Cup is one day only, and will have a trophy presented at the Fall Banquet.  Interested in joining me on the Race Committee Boat?  Give me a call 303.457.3839, or send me an e-mail:  sailing841@aol.com.

Speaking of the Fall Banquet (see details under Social Committee), it is time to start thinking about the forthcoming elections.  The Nominating Committee members are:  Jan Poulson, Ken Poulson, and Bev Johnson.  If you are interested in running for an office, you are able to do so by obtaining 10 signatures, meeting the requirements that are required by the bylaws (available on line, or you can contact me) and submitting your request to the Nominating Committee.  Basically, you must be a full member in good standing (dues are paid and work hours are complete), and if running for Commodore, you must be a full member for 2 years and have served one year on the E-Board.

The Committee Chairs are appointed by the Commodore.  If you are interested in a committee position, or need information on any of the Officer or Committee Chair responsibilities, feel free to contact me or anyone on the Board.

See you at the race Saturday!

Carrie Pfister   Sailing841@aol.com

TREASURER   -   DENISE MORIARTY

Hey everyone!  Wow, the summer went fast didn't it?  Of course, we've had lots of exciting things to keep us all busy, and that means that there are probably lots of receipts out there that need to be sent to me!!  Please get those turned in as soon as possible, and don't forget that you need to have the committee head's approval first.  Also, be very clear about what the expense is for, so I know how to account for it.  If I have a question about whether the expense is valid or what it is for, that will delay the check going out to you.

Also, an early reminder to bondholders: if your address has changed during the year, please let me know so that I can send mailings to the proper addresses without delays.

Thanks,

Denise Moriarty  Dande24@aol.com

CLUB HISTORIAN   -   JACKIE GURLEY

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS—August 16, 2003.

Carter Lake Sailing Club has never been like anywhere else.  Since the days it was known as the Denver Sailing Club, people were lured by the thought of great sailing on a clear mountain lake.  Even with the challenges of working to build and maintain the club, some people wouldn’t go anywhere else, for the friendships developed along the way made it all worthwhile.

Over the years, many members became interested in the history of the club.  Emmy Koehler completed a seven-year history in 1960.  Kurt Plache sought a historian in 1972.  Lynda Fromme published a 25-year History, “A Peek in the Past,” in a 1984 log that ended in “Let’s make the next 25 years even better with increased espirit de corps.”

There seemed to be some confusion about the true date of the founding of the Club.  It wasn’t until 2003 that history documents were brought together, examined and it was discovered the club was in fact 50 years old, founded on August 20, 1953.  A celebration was in order and planning for the 50th Celebration began.

Volunteers were recruited, plans were made, address lists were researched, and invitations were addressed.  One hundred and seventy five past and present members were invited to spend the day on the lake and at the clubhouse.

Never in CLSC history had such a celebration taken place.  As the moment of the big party approached, it became apparent that the idea the idea had caught on throughout the club.

Ø       By 1:30, boats on the dock were decorated with flags and glitter, and members enjoyed reunions and meeting friends never forgotten.

Ø       At 2:30, the parade began, but floundered in disarray due to the absence of the commodore.  Seventeen boats circled, and finally Bill Kieser was appropriately declared the leader and encouraged to proceed.  The commodore’s prop had failed her and she boarded the vice-commodore’s boat to join in the procession.  Eighteen boats, with flags flowing, circled the lake.  Jet skiers and powerboats were in awe at the spectacle.

Ø       At 3:00, several boats could no longer resist the fair southeast winds, and pulled out with furled sails to return to the slips.

Ø       By 4:00, the party had moved up the hill to the clubhouse.

Ø       By half past 5:00, the whole group was treated to a feast of unparalleled proportions. The keg flowed, and the table bulged.  This is the way it’s done—the way it’s always been done at Carter Lake.

Ø       At 6:00, a brief celebration honored all members past and present, including twelve past commodores.  A champagne toast celebrated 50 years in true fashion.

Ø       Members were present from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and new millennium, but the 80’s group soon took charge out on the deck.

Ø       At 8:00, the Mays showed up and the party intensified.  The music was turned up, and the 80’s group went into high gear on the lower deck.  Soon Rasta Bob returned, Elke and Nina led the dancing.

Ø       By 8:30, the party planners and volunteers were wearing down.  You can only have so much fun.

Ø       By 9:30, the clubhouse was quiet again.  Things were back to normal at Carter Lake.

In the days since its inception, the Carter Lake Sailing Club had hosted many events, large and small.  On August 16, 2003, the people were never counted, but they are thought to have numbered close to 150.  The founders of Carter Lake Sail Club surely would be proud.                                           (With apologies to John Steinbeck!)

So many people helped to bring this celebration to fruition.  It is my belief that we cannot say thank you enough.  I would like to share a special thanks to these people:

ü       Lynn Kieser, who helped keep us all on track on the project!

ü       Carrie Pfister and the e-board for their support of the celebration.

ü       Carrie, Raegen Morgan, Lynn, Helen Zeitlin and Marilyn Hughes who helped research and address invitations.

ü       Raegen, who coordinated the keg.

ü       Jeff Gruver, John and Sally Heer, Carrie for set-up and food on the docks.

ü       Todd Rogers and Nina Simmers who coordinated the champagne toast.

ü       Tonya Dunn, who provided the flowers.

ü       Shannon and Rich Tenze, who ordered and picked up the fabulous cakes.

ü       Steve and Linda Cooper, who provided the lemonade and water on the docks and at the club.

ü       Floyd Harrison and Beverly Johnson for taking pictures.

ü       Lynn and Bill Kieser, who provided a collection of trophies that was added to by other members for our display.

ü       Carrie and all the boat parade participants.

ü       All current members for their food and preparation.

ü       All past members by their enthusiastic replies and honoring the club with their presence.

ü       Terri Padget and Gay Hampton for the enormous clean-up after dinner.

ü       All club members who said—“What can I do?”

I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone.  It was a fabulous day that we can be proud of!

Sept 27                  Minnesota Hot Dish               Jake & Corri Connally, Stan & Shirley

Drinks & Appetizers:  5:30       Hot Dishes:  6:00

What is a Minnesota Hot Dish?   Well, it’s a meal baked in a casserole dish meant to stick to the ribs.  Some say it’s meant to thaw you out after a freezing day of ice fishing, but since your blood is mostly alcohol anyway by the time you come in from “a nice day on the lake”, that just doesn’t ring true.

A Hot Dish has two key ingredients:  some sort of ground meat and a can of cream soup.  The rest is up to your own creativity.  Minnesotans rely heavily on black pepper to “spice things up”, but since we are Coloradoans and have refined palates, any hot dish concoction will suffice so long as it is edible…..  Oh, by the way, we’re still looking for some Lutefisk so everyone can have a true Minnesota eating experience!

The Club will provide Minnesota’s best Hamm’s beer for your North Woods drinking pleasure, breads, and an assortment of tasty cobblers and ice cream for dessert.

A-H   Side Dish--vegetable, salad

I-R    Main Course Hot Dish/Casserole

S-Z   Appetizers

Be sure and try to make it to the last two potlucks of the season.  It’s sure to be a

good time with good food and friends.

SLIPS COMMITTEE REPORT  -   MIKE MORGAN

Well, it's time to start thinking about the end of the season. Slip Pullout is tentatively scheduled for October 18th and 19th. We will also be having a workday sometime in September to insert more foam filled jugs into the tires.

We have also been having a problem with people leaving the gate open. Even if you know someone is coming behind you please shut it.   People are watching for us to leave the gates open so they can enter. Whenever you enter the slips close the gate behind you. Other than that have a great fall of sailing.

CLUBHOUSE  COMMITTEE REPORT -  DALE QUAKENBUSH

The clubhouse had a busy August. A great crowd turned out for our 50th party. Thanks to all who showed up for the workday on such short notice on the 10th. And to Carrie to supervise the work day. The new frig’s are working great. The beer is just at freezing. There is still a full keg from the 50th party so come to the next potluck and help drain it.

Sept has several private parties.

Tue. 9/2 Green  11-3pm

Sat. 9/6 Harrison 7:30am-11:30am

Sun. 9/7 Cooper

Sat. 9/13  Gruver late pm-eve.

WE need to keep the BBQ grills clean. We had a small grease fire in one that was quickly brought under control. IF THE GRILLS ARE DIRTY CLEAN THEM BEFORE YOU USE THEM. LETS NOT BURN DOWN THE CLUB HOUSE!!

Someone also put a bunch of food in the trash can with no trash bags. There are 55gal trash bags under the south edge of the island so please use them. This was from use during the week. If you use the clubhouse please take out your trash to the dumpsters. Especially this time of year as the animals get ready for winter.

There is someone out there unhappy about using the shower room for storage. I was not aware of it being available for showers and we were using it for storage for the flotations for our breakwater.  It has now been cleaned out and ready to use.

I am also looking for some to help me out with the clubhouse next year. Some one willing to keep track of the stocking and inside cleaning and organizing of the clubhouse would be great. This person would be in charge of the inside of the clubhouse. I would take care of overall repair and maintenence of the clubhouse and grounds ,camping etc.

So many people helped to bring this celebration to fruition.  It is my belief that we cannot say thank you enough.  I would like to share a special thanks to these people:

ü       Raegen, who coordinated the keg.

ü       Jeff Gruver, John and Sally Heer, Carrie for set-up and food on the docks.

ü       Todd Rogers and Nina Simmers who coordinated the champagne toast.

ü       Tonya Dunn, who provided the flowers.
