EDITOR LOG - LANA LOHE
I’m continuing my position as the
Corresponding Secretary for the 2004 sailing season. I look forward to sending out the monthly “CARTER LAKE LOG” next year. My husband Robert Lohe, (Safety and Education
Committee) and I have been sailing with the CLSC for 8 years. We have a Catalina 27 “REBEL FORCE”. We enjoy racing and I really enjoy talking to
people and the fun potlucks our sail club hosts. This is my 3rd year as Corresponding
Secretary and I truly enjoy preparing the logs for our club members. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I’ve
enjoyed creating them each month. I also
head up the “Women’s Sailing” program, so please watch for dates of some
upcoming non-sailing events and then the sailing events next year. I hope we can get more women to come out and
sail with us next season. It’s a fun way
to meet new members and to improve your sailing skills while having fun. We’ll be doing some more sunfish sailing next
year and remember: Guests are ALWAYS WELCOME TO JOIN US!!!!!!
Please send any email or address changes to me and I will forward
them to the E-board.
I want to thank everyone for reading
the monthly logs. It’s the best way to
find out what’s happening in the club, such as upcoming potlucks & what the
theme’s will be, racing schedule, boat parties, women’s sailing dates, junior
sailing, work days and etc.
Your feedback is welcome. Just email me your thoughts.
How many days till the Boat
Show??? And the Membership Meeting??? And boats go
in???
Looking forward to seeing everyone
for the winter membership meeting in February.

The Fall
Banquet was a HUGE success. A big thanks
to Todd Rogers and Nina Simmers for their hosting and planning of the event,
and to all members for their help. The
venue was perfect for the last formal event for our 50th Anniversary.
A business
meeting was held, and a few changes to the bylaws were passed, and you will see
a new version reflecting these shortly.
Basically, we added a maximum boat length of 29' due to safety issues
and slip constraints. We will be looking
in to width and draft for presentation at the February meeting. We also accepted a formalized proration of
dues to 50% for members joining after September 1st. During the winter we will also be cleaning up
the bylaws and regulations to eliminate duplicate items, and bring verbage in
to line that is consistant through out both sets. We also looked into and accepted obtaining
additional insurance that would cover the slips during the winter storage. More details and coverage will be available
at the Winter Membership meeting.
Elections were
also held. Please read through the
entire log to become acquainted with the Executive Board for 2004. They have provided a brief history and
outlook for what they see. I am very
excited to be working with them and look forward to another year of continued
growth and activities.
A bit of
clarification for the Junior Olympic Festival... Unfortunately, some of the information we
received from SAIL was incorrect. The
event is not a ladder event, and it follows that no one will be forwarded on to
the Olympic event. What is it? An incredible opportunity to introduce
sailors (from 8 to the age of 21) to Olympic style and learning
and
events. There are 20 of these events
scheduled in the United States and Hawaii, with Carter Lake being one of
them! More information can be found at:
www.ussailing.org/youth/racing/jo/index.htm.
Ivan Andrade will be heading up this event. He will have information in the logs under
Special Committees, and in time there will be a link on our web site. This is a HUGE undertaking, and Ivan has
mentioned his goal of 100 boats for the event.
And now a bit
about myself for new members... I am in
my 6th year as a member of CLSC and 5th year on the Executive Board. Previous positions include 2 years as
Membership Chair, followed by Vice Commodore and last year as Commodore. I have a Merit 25 and a Fireball, which I
have been promised will deliver the ride of a lifetime. Originally from WI, I
grew up on Lake Michigan and spent summers on inland lakes "up north"
where my parents ran a resort, and taught all types of water sports including
sailing dinghies. During the week I am a
mortgage originator and underwriter....
Educational background includes degrees in Business Law and Philosophy,
licensed insurance agent (not practicing) as well as a Paralegal
Certification... Whew! The things you
never know, hmm?
As Commodore of
the club, my job is to represent the club at sailing functions and be the
facilitator for the Executive Board.
Although trying at times, I can assure you that I am passionate about
this club and everything it has to offer and will represent it with nothing
less. If you ever have any questions or
concerns, feel free to contact me (or any Board member) at anytime. We are here to help, support, vent.....
whatever it may be.

TREASURER LOG
- DENISE MORIARTY
Welcome to the
new, exciting 2004 season at Carter Lake Sailing Club! I'm looking forward to a wonderful year, as
always. I don't have any financial news
to report. So, here's a little bit about
me. I've been a member of the club since
1996, and Erin's been a member since Jan. 28, 1998. She attended her first
membership meeting at one month of age.
We live in Brighton, and we have an old dog named Boomer, and a young
kitten named Emme. None of us are
terribly good sailors, but we love the friends we've made at CLSC, and at least
some of us HOPE to be good sailors in the future.
Remember the pact,
girls!!
Thanks,
Denise

SAFETY & EDUCATION LOG -
ROBERT LOHE
This is my second
year heading up the Safety & Education committee. Last year I set up a weather presentation
with Nick Carter from Channel 9 News to come and talk about Colorado Weather
and clouds. I will be working on some
more seminars and classes this sailing season.
Some classes I will be setting up will be an Anchoring class, an Introduction of Celestial Navigation and
some safety classes on motorized dinghies.
Please contact me
if you have any ideas or thoughts of some classes you’d like to see the club
present.

JUNIOR SAILING LOG - DAVID
& MARILYN HUGHES
Jr.
Sailors-plans are in the works for next year's Sail Camp and if you still have
your feedback sheet and want to send it in we'd appreciate it. If you've lost
the sheet, call us or send us an email. We'd like to hear your ideas. The two
session camp seemed to work well so we are planning to repeat that set up in
2004. We are also looking at options for our older Jr. sailors 16-18.
At this point we are thinking of scheduling
camp a little earlier for 2004. We would like to avoid the super hot weather in
July and are hoping to set up dates in late June. Stay tuned... we should have
that decision made within the next few weeks.
Junior
Sailors and Club members- most of you already know that Carter Lake has been
selected as a site for a Jr. Olympic Festival July 31-Aug.1, 2004!
Here
is some general information about the Jr. Olympics. Please contact Ivan Andrade
if you would like to help with the festival. It
is a great opportunity for our juniors and junior sailors from all
around the region.
US Sailing's Junior Olympic Sailing Program is
a nationwide series of sailing regattas for youth ages 8-21. Each event in this
family of regattas is hosted by a different club or organization. but all
events share a common goal: to encourage young sailors to enjoy sailing and to
develop their skill. The types of boats
sailed at the Carter Lake Junior Festival will be: Laser, Optimist, Snipe and
Sunfish. This will be a terrific chance for jr. sailors to compete and have
fun!

CLUB HISTORIAN LOG - JACKIE GURLEY
I began sailing in
1991 and joined CLSC that fall. Although
Mike and I were
very inexperienced
sailors and did not see ourselves as "club people", we
were soon wrapped
up in club activities. We are both past
commodores, have
headed numerous
committees over the years. Recently I
have taken on the
challenge of
gathering and making sense of the club history.
Sailing and the
Carter Lake Sailing Club has been a hugely positive
influence on us
and our family over the years. Our
daughter, Ann, grew up
in four different versions of the Junior Sailing
Program and has become
quite a
sailor. In fact, she received a
scholarship to college due to her
expressions in the
interviews that she is a sailor and could articulate what
life lessons she
learned from sailing. I am a educator
and have enjoyed
working with kids
for 29 years in a variety of schools and positions. I
spend my
professional days with people, but you can often find me in my
personal time
relaxing on "recess" with a
good book, sailing with Mike and
Ann, or on the
lake simply playing on a Sunfish.
Jackie
Gurley
As
the new RC Chair, I look forward to overseeing the race program this year. I hope to see a large percentage of the club
participating in club racing this season, both at the helm and as crew. I emphasize to
those that haven't tried it to take part in at least one club race this season
- try it you'll like it! I
plan to use the club email list and website whenever possible for race
communications throughout the season, so check it often. Also watch for sailing seminars - SAIL does a
monthly series of seminars beginning in the new year and there is usually a RC
training session available. www.rmsail.org
I am also entertaining ideas for local clinics
at the lake this season.
About myself - I have been sailing at Carter
for the last seven years. A majority of my boating experience prior to that
involved paddles or motors. I was
sailing a Santana 25 when my wife Toni and I and our two boys joined the
club. I decided to downsize to a J22
(and Bucc 18) to become more active in one-design racing. For those that prefer a true one-design keelboat,
the J22 is very competitive with a small crew, reasonably priced, has a very
active local and national fleet, and is easy to trailer sail (couldn't resist
the plug). Racing has proven to be a joy
to me. Between club racing and traveling
events with the fleet it gives my crew and I plenty of time on the water to
improve our skills and keep the sailing fix going. As RC chair this season I hope to learn a lot
more about what goes on behind the scenes in race organization and its
governing body.
If
anyone has any comments or suggestions on the club race program, please send me
your input.
See
you on the water!
Brian Jones

- SHANNAN TENZE
I
am excited for the opportunity to plan parties – what fun! Thanks Carrie. I'll do my best to fill the shoes left by my
predecessors and provide another great year of socials. Rich and I are fairly new to sailing, next
year will mark our fourth season and third as members. Our first boat was a Potter then a Mac 26c
and currently a Hunter 260. CLSC is full
of so many great people and we a very pleased to be a part of it. See you all at the winter membership meeting
in February 2004. Watch for the date to
be announced in the January log.
Happy
Holidays!

SLIPS COMMITTEE LOG - MIKE
MORGAN
For those new
members that I haven't met, I would like to welcome you to the club and
introduce myself. My name is Michael Morgan and I am in charge of the Slips and
Docks. My wife is Jan Morgan and we have 3 children, Garrett, Kendra and
Shanna. We sail on Liquid Assets, an S-2 8.0.
Well, it's time to
start getting ready for next season. We will be having a couple of work days on
the slips this spring. We will be replacing bad boards on both sets of slips.
In addition we need to repair some of the Rub-Rail on the old slips. The Rub
Rail is a project that can be worked on this winter for anybody short on work
hours.
When the water
comes up a little more we will also be needing to add some weights to the
Courtesy Dock. One of the cables snapped in a wind storm and we lost half of
our weights. We need to have a dry shore line in order to get the Boom Truck
down to the waters edge so we need to wait till the water comes up a little.
I will e-mail
everyone when the water is high enough to add the weights. Hopefully we can do
this on a day when we needed to pull the Courtesy Dock in anyway.

CLUBHOUSE COMMITTEE LOG
- DALE QUAKENBUSH
FIRST
I WANT TO THANK ALL THE MEMBERS WHO CAME TO ALL THE WORK DAYS THIS
YEAR
AND MADE SUCH A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THE TRAILER PARKING , CAMPING AND
CLUBHOUSE.
The
clubhouse was in active use 57 days this season and held up very well.
Its
time to start thinking about next year and it looks to be a busy one.
AS
my second year as committee chair I plan to make the clubhouse an even better
place to be.
I
am looking for someone to officially help with operation of the building and
stocking of supplies. Any one interested please give me a call. I don't plan on
trailer tags this year. I DO want to keep the list of
trailer
tags going so I can ID trailers and move them if needed. SO PLEASE put tag # on
your membership apps. I am going to schedule work days throughout the year so
they don't fall on race days and we don't have that last min. notice of days. I
would like member feedback from members on being able to camp on a weekend or
short term basis if spots are left empty. Looking forward to a great year next
year and call or e-mail anytime with ideas and comments/problems etc.
I am having a work day for
members who are short on hours or anyone who would like to come up to the
clubhouse on Saturday, December 13th starting at 1pm.
WE
will clean up the beach area where the slips were. Work on the slips repairing
the rub rails etc. Someone could remove the men & woman signs at the
bathrooms and take them home to sand and varnish. The whaler chase boat needs to be cleaned up
too.
LET’S GET TOGETHER FOR A
POTLUCK: SATURDAY, DEC. 13TH
After
the work day we would like to have a potluck.
All members are invited to come up to the clubhouse for a potluck and to
tell stories. We’ll show a movie later that evening. Remember there is no
available water so bring a crockpot or other dishes that need no cleaning at
the clubhouse. X-MAS treats are expected. Ivan and Jeff are providing the 1st.
story(lie) and movie. Bring your stories, the bigger the stories (lies) the
better. The biggest story wins…….
See
you all there.

GOVERNMENT LIAISON LOG
- DAVE LOCK
I am honored and
humbled that Carrie has asked me to fill the governmental liaison role at this
important time in our Club's history.
Since we are
relatively new to CLSC, let me include a few words of introduction. My wife
Jennie and I sail a Catalina 250 -- "Julietta" -- mostly as cruisers.
We live in Lyons and so far are surviving life with two teenage daughters,
Katie, 15 and Sarah, 13. When not sailing, I am a lobbyist in Washington, D.C.
and in Denver, representing about 30 electric utilities around the state of
Colorado. I have spent most of my career working with and for northern Colorado
local governments, including the cities of Loveland, Estes Park, Fort Collins,
Longmont and Lyons. Currently, I am Chairman of the Boulder County Planning
Commission. I offer this information about my background so you can rest
assured that I have the experience and contacts necessary to play a productive
and positive role as the Club's liaison with various governmental entities.
I encourage any
Club member who is interested in working with me on our governmental outreach
and interaction efforts to contact me. I
look forward to many years of sailing together at Carter Lake!

WEBMASTER
- STEVE UNDY
This is what happens when you innocently ask about the website - you suddenly find yourself the webmaster and a member of the E-Board.
My wife, April and I just joined CLSC in 2003. We have been sailing since 1995. Probably the highlight of our sailing life so far are the three months we took off to go live and sail on a 27 foot sailboat in the Gulf Islands in British Columbia, Canada. We now own a 19 foot West Wight Potter that we stealth sail (we sail it, but nobody sees us doing it). We have two small children who love sailing too.
Steve Undy
