Remember to send
all email or mailing address changes to me.
On that same note, I’ve noticed some people have more than one email
address. So when you send a request for an email address change, please be so
kind as to tell me which one I’m to replace.
I’m not to good at guessing.
Are you ready for

It's spring! Soon the slips will be full, the potlucks
and racing season will begin and as always, the wind will be out of control. Just a reminder to make sure masts are
staggered when you are in the slips, preservers are on board and you have a
change of clothes on land that hopefully you will not need. The second reminder is for park passes and
registration to be affixed and current on both cars and boats prior to
launching. You can purchase a season
pass on line, and use the confirmation as your car pass (place in your window)
until the actual one arrives. The site
is: www.co.larimer.co.us/parks
On April 18th,
from 2-4pm I will host a seminar for the ladies of the club "Racing Rules
for Women", with Tom Downing as the speaker. Anything you don't understand or were afraid
to ask about...now is the time! It will in the area of 120th and I-25. Please contact me ASAP (303.457.3839 or
sailing841@aol.com) to reserve your space.
Another item to
pencil in on your calendar will be on May 19th, 9pm EST on ESPN.... A one hour
program entitled "25 Years of Sailing", which will be sponsored by
Rolex, hosted and produced by Gary Jobson.
I was able to see a portion of this program this past fall, and it was
incredible.
Please take
time to read through the log. There is a
LOT going on, and we need both volunteers and participants to make these
programs and events work. Also, make use of the forum sections on the web....a
great way to keep up on things and look for crew/find boats to crew on.
See you on the
slips and at the E-Board sponsored Chili cook-off on the 24th!
See you on the water!

Help, Help, Help! I still need a few volunteers for the Carter
Open Regatta on June 4th, 5th, and 6th.
I need three appetizer helpers for Friday the 4th from 5:00pm for a few
hours. You will prepare the food, set it out, and clean up after registration. It's a fun easy job and a great way to log
some hours. I also need two more people
to help with dinner on Saturday night.
You will be assisting the caterer with set up and ticket collection;
etc. This will start at 4:30pm until
done. This is another fun way to get
some hours in. Please contact me by phone
or email if you can help out.

SAFETY & EDUCATION LOG -
ROBERT LOHE
To start off the sailing season education topics, there will be a general discussion of VHF/marine radio communication on Saturday, April 17 at 9:00 A.M. at the clubhouse. Topics for the hour to hour and a half session will include a few details of radio operation, communication protocol, channel selection and hands on practice. Radios will be provided or please bring your own. Additionally I need one or two volunteers to handle radios to communicate with for the hands on practice.
The following article is reprinted with permission from The Boulder Beacon, the newsletter of the Boulder Valley Power Squadron:

Safety
. . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . From the
Bottom Up As I write this, it is 78 degrees and the
Vernal Equinox is just hours away. Which means every self-respecting boater
is thinking about getting the batteries charged, the winter cover off, and
getting to the lake! Because almost all of us had to store our crafts on
trailers last winter, it can’t hurt to do a little inspection before we
tighten the plug, throw in the sandwiches, and drop her in. Start from the
bottom and work your way up to prevent problems before they ruin your time on
the water. 1.
We all know
that under inflation is primary reason for tire failure on our trailer and
tow buggy. But deterioration and cracking of the tire sidewalls often occurs
way before we are able to wear down the tread of the tire. Take a few moments
to look for cracks or other signs of solar deterioration before you inflate
those tires to their maximum capacity. 2.
Next check the
wheel bearings for run out and lubrication. I like to jack the trailer
axle(s) and spin the wheels by hand. Then I check for play, in and out at the
top and bottom of the wheel. Hopefully you checked the wheel bearing
lubrication last fall so water didn’t set in the bearings over the winter. If
the wheels don’t spin freely there could be rust in the bearing or race.
Replace any bearings and/or races that are suspect and make sure you have
spares in your trailer box. |
3. If your trailer has brakes, the shoes or pads should be inspected once a year. Either at haul out and before storage, or now if it wasn’t done last fall. 4. Now inspect the trailer itself. Look for rust and bent or broken frame members. Are the bunks and rollers still supporting the boat as they should? Lubricate the hitch coupler and work the mechanism a couple of times to make sure it operates smoothly. Check and lubricate the winch; is the strap or cable still tight? What about the safety chain and the tie downs? 5. When hooking up to your tow vehicle check the receiver, pin and ball. Check and cross the trailer safety chains under the hitch. Plug in the lights and have your buddy step on the brake and turn on the lights and turn signals while you stand back and check the lights. Make sure all tires are inflated to the correct pressure when still cold, and don’t forget to check the spares. Most
trailers will provide years of service if properly maintained and properly
loaded. Have a great boating season in 2004! Frank Locker AP |

Attention Jr. Racers:
There
was a planning meeting during the Saturday dock put in to organize some
advanced jr. racing seminars in 2004. The goal of the seminars is to provide a
program for junior racers who are 13 and older, have been involved with racing
and want to get more practice and hone skills. Craig Fleming (collegiate racer,
ASA instructor and rigger at the Anchorage) has agreed to help coach the
seminars. (See his bio on the Anchorage web site) Thanks to those 7 Jr. Sailors
who attended the organizational meeting to meet Craig and help us start
creating a great program. The four dates
that we came up with for the series are: May 22, 29, June 12 and June 19.
Students meet Craig at the Courtesy dock at Carter Lake at 9:00 am. Cancellations
due to weather will be at the dock only.
We may add other days in July if there is interest. The registration
form for the Jr. racing seminars will be on the web site under racing and

CLUB HISTORIAN LOG - JACKIE
GURLEY
At the E-board
meeting in January, it was suggested that I do some “Time Capsules”, what was
happening 50. 40. 20 years ago, in all the areas of club operation. Before I begin that, I’d like to share the
final installment of the original Denver Sailing Club history, written by Emmy
Koehler, First Club Secretary and Historian.
I am struck again by the lessons learned so many years ago that continue
to define and guide the members of the Carter Lake Sailing Club.
We begin in 1958.
Part IV, History
of the Denver Sailing Club, by Emmy Koehler
Activities and
plans increased as we continued to grow.
The year 1958/59 saw the following:
Change of by-laws.
Dues raised to $12.00 for single and
$15.00 for family (without one protest.
Collecting money for about
everything; meetings, refreshments,
dinners, etc. for the benefit of the building fund.
Issuance of $25.00 interest bearing
bonds. All assets of the club reserved
as first lien for the security of those bonds, and repayment after two years of
issuance to 20% of the subscribers, the names to be drawn by lot.
Start of the ordering Christmas
cards through Emmy Koehler for the building fund and later for the redeeming of
the bonds.
Pro-rationing dues for new members
after June 1.
Establishing associate membership
for former members.
First John Biddle Lecture with
profits to us.
Second display at the Boat and
Travel show.
First Invitational Regatta on July
4/5.
Foundation for the club house
poured, but due to too much wet weather not much else was accomplished.
And so we come to
the last year, 1959/60.
What pleasure and what luxury to
find the road over the dams paved with the promise to complete the job next
year.
The building was started and the
shell completed, also insulation installed.
The second John Biddle Lecture
netted us quite a sum and placed us first in sales among local sailing groups.
A Christmas party and a Surprise
party in February, the latter with marvelous fold dancing at the Jefferson
County Bank Building.
Fire and Hazard Insurance for the
club house.
Second Invitational Regatta, known
from now on as The Adolph Coors Cup Invitational Regatta, as the Coors Brewery
Co. had donated a large trophy for this purpose. Ed Kaiser of the Rocky Mountain Sailing
Association was the first winner.
Donation of another dinghy by a
departing member, R. Long.
For the first time simple supper
provided at Labor Day Regatta (at nominal cost.)
Another great storm leveled 11 boats
on August 11, but the keel boats or those carrying outriggers were not
affected. It proved the wisdom of
applying those while boats are on the mooring.
It may not look nautical, but it provides a sound, unworried, sleep
during storms.
And so, the first
seven year cycle with its tribulations and trials have come to an end. There is a great future in store fore this
club if all members will realize that it is One for All and All for One. Each one has to pay its share with money and
work; then, and only then, will you
enjoy to the fullest the sailing with other like-minded friends.
For Otto and me,
it has been a pleasure to work for the development of this club, but the
material acquisitions and growth in membership alone is not what counts. Never
forget that everyone of you holds the future of this organization in his
hands--that cooperation and responsibility are the watch words, and that it is
the spirit which makes dreams come true.
October,
1960 Emmy and Otto Koehler
Jackie
Gurley
Thanks to the 9
CLSC members who attended the US Sailing RC Management Class. And a special thanks to our ownTom Ruwitch
who served as one of the instructors. I
think that all who attended would agree it was time well spent, and that it
will have a positive affect on our Club RC this season.
I have the power
point presentation if anyone is interested I can email a copy.
NOR for the Club
Series and Rookie Series are on the website.
I will ask Lana to send a copy out to the membership as a reminder.
Rookie Series:
Rookies get your
boats ready by May 1st, the first session of the Rookie Series. The format will be two Saturdays (classroom
and water), or Sundays, followed by "Rookie Starts" added to the May
22/23 race weekend. The classroom
training is open to anyone who would like to attend and the racing
CD will be
available for a nominal charge. We
could use a few more boat coach volunteers from the experienced racers out
there.
Club Racing Series:
I.
The first race weekend is fast approaching - be sure to register at (or before)
the skippers meeting so fleets may be established. Attention: U20's, Capri's,
Catalina's, get four boats registered for ODR competition this year! If you can't make the skippers meeting please
register your fleet
intentions in
advance!
II. We are considering 8 race marks on the
course this season. The Racing Forum on www.sailcarter.org contains some
discussion on it for your review and comment, or you can always call or
email. The final decision on these
items will be announced at the skippers meeting.
* Mark #5 at the discretion of RC as a
"temporary bungee cone-mark", to be placed in a similar fashion as
#7. It may be placed on the west side of
the lake, south of #6, and west of #3, on a no-wake buoy. One possibility for #5 is to serve as a
leeward mark when the wind is out of #1.
* Mark #8, the orange pin, as a gate
mark using the start/finish line. A creative suggestion was made to help
resolve the problems associated with shortening course on Carter. As I understand it, if RC chooses a longer
course, they can use #8 as an intermediate mark. If the wind should die in
the middle of the
race (by some rare weather phenomenon), the S flag may be raised, without
moving the Bayliner, so the gate becomes the finish line instead of an
intermediate mark.
Wouldn't it be
great to have a dinghy fleet out there for the summer series, and fall?
But there is the need for a safety boat out there too. This implies a good sized RC staff and an
adequate chase boat available to RC.
Wouldn't it be
great to have a Wednesday night series of race clinics put on by some of our
members? e.g. Long Days of June Race
Clinics.

SLIPS COMMITTEE LOG - MIKE
MORGAN
The good news
first, we had a great turnout and were able to get the slips launched
successfully on Saturday, March 27th. The bad news if you haven't already heard
is with the Breakwater. The sections that were beached when the water level
dropped in December filled with mud and sunk to the bottom of the lake when the
level came back up in February. Because of this we had major problems trying to
get it launched on Sunday and were not able to get it completed.
I want to thank
everyone that came up to help on both Saturday and Sunday. We had a good
turnout on both day's and the weather sure didn't help make it any easier. At
least Sunday we were able to get the biggest problems with the Breakwater taken
care of. This next Saturday we will the last 20 feet or so that is still on the
beach cleaned out and reattached to the Breakwater. There are also some tires
on sections that are floating that are down and still filled with mud, we need
to get them back floating. With a good turnout we should have no problem
getting everything completed in one day.
We will have
another work day this coming Saturday, April 3rd. We will meet at the lake at
9:00 and finish launching the Breakwater. Please bring garden trowels to get
the mud out of the few tires still on the beach. Also anyone that has waders so
you can work in the shallow water at the beach. Lunch will be provided.
Please try to make
it up to the Lake Saturday so we can launch our boats and get the season
started. As per the club By-laws we cannot put our boats into the slips until
all components of the slips and docks launched.
Later,
Mike
Morgan

The CLSC Task
Force will meet on April 8th with Larimer County Parks and Open Space personnel
as part of our ongoing effort to reach a permanent agreement between the Club
and the County. CLSC Task Force members
(Carrie Pfister, Mike Gurley, Don Waldburger and Dave Lock) received approval
from the E-Board to discuss price/value options with the County for the Club to
maintain ownership of our slips and the ability to continue to use our
Clubhouse IF the the County succeeds with building a County-run marina
facility. Per the Club's existing
agreement with the County, Larimer County Commissioners have until August 31st
to approve plans for a County-run marina.
If the approval is not granted, then CLSC will continue to exist as it
has, paying a slightly higher lease payment to the County in 2005 and beyond.
