EDITOR LOG - LANA LOHE
I wanted to say
how neat it is that our members can now go to the CLSC website and update their
own personal information.
I am heading up
this year’s 2004 Lady Victory Race scheduled for June 12th & 13th. I am working on CLSC Lady Victory T-shirts
for everyone and should have them ready by the Carter Open. I would like to have a meeting that Sunday
evening June 6th(6pm-ish) after the Carter Open trophy presentation at the
clubhouse. Please email or call me to let me know if you
are a Skipper, crewing or want to skipper and/or crew on a boat and we will
help you find crew or a boat to crew on. It should be a lot of fun this year and
hopefully some more winds than we had last year, along with making it a two day
event. WE NEED WOMEN TO SKIPPER BOATS……
Let’s get every woman in CLSC on a boat racing this year.!!
Bring your
girlfriends and come on out and race …..
Hope to hear from
everyone soon…. I’m open for any and all
ideas and suggestions.
P.S… OK SAILOR MEN, HERE’S

It is incredible to watch, and there is lots going on, and we are always

race! Please come out, and show people
how it is done on this lake! We have
invited a few of the Larimer County personnel to come up for the Saturday night

VICE COMMODORE LOG – JEFF
GRUVER
The
Open Regatta is closer than ever and I want to thank everyone who stepped up to
the plate to help out with the numerous jobs associated with an event of this
size. Since I have not been able to be
around the club events on the weekends, I will be available all day, all three
days of the regatta to distribute shirt orders that many of you have made. I will also have the new CLSC hat in three
different styles available as well as burgees and other fun stuff. Remember, even if you are not into the racing
scene the regatta weekend is a great time to come out and see all the action
and socialize with other out-of-town sailors.
See you there!
Jeff

TREASURER LOG
- DENISE MORIARTY
Everything
is going smoothly with the Club finances.
Please remember to have receipts approved by committee heads, and then
mail them to me, with instructions for who is to receive the reimbursement,
what address to send it to, and the budget line item that the expense should be
posted to. This is particularly important
for slips and docks, as is it hard for me to tell whether the expense relates
to slips, breakwater, or dock.

SAFETY & EDUCATION LOG -
ROBERT LOHE
With the success of the VHF seminar, this is the time to be interactive to let me know what you would like to for the next seminar. Anchoring or Introductory Celestial Navigation? Please email me with your choices.
Remember the winds at Carter have been strong lately so wear your PFD while on the boat. Water temps are still
quite cold.

JUNIOR SAILING LOG - DAVID
& MARILYN HUGHES
Junior Sailing
has several topics this month: Dinghy racers list, Safety/Rescue boat class,
Junior Racing seminars, Jr. Sailing sponsored continental breakfast at the Open
and last minute Junior Sailing camp needs.
Dinghy
racers want more dinghy racing
opportunities? Sign up to be on the Denver Sailing Association contact list. We
have been passing info to club members we think would be interested but it is
slow and imperfect. To receive information directly, please contact Steve Davis
at 303-699-0317 or by email at sdavis@cetenv.com
The
Safety/Rescue boat class scheduled for June 8 and June 10 still has a couple of
spaces open. This is a free class taught by Steve Linton at the Anchorage, who
is donating his time. Please sign up if
you are interested by contacting Robert Lohe or Dave Hughes. Complete
information on the class is in the April Log. If you plan to or would like to
help on the water at Sail Camp or the Jr. Olympic Festival this is the class
for you.
The first
Junior racing seminar was Saturday May 22, 2004. If you are 13- 18 years old
and want to attend any or all of the remaining seminars you can do so just by
contacting Jeanne and Stan Strathman or Dave and Marilyn Hughes. The
application is on the website under racing. The fee is small and learning is
great.
Both Junior
Sailing camps still have space for one or two sailors. The camps are scheduled
earlier this year. The “A” camp is June 16 to 19 and the “B” camp is June 23 to
25. Regatta for both camps is June 26th.
Forms are on the website. We would like to have full camps again this year.
If anyone wants
work hours there are several jobs to be done before camp as well as some adult
help needed during camp. Examples: we need an electric switch put in to run the
shower pump, one club sunfish needs some repair and tlc on its bottom, we would
like several people to do work on the courtesy dock and dock box. There will be
a pre camp workday on June 12th starting at noon. We also would like a large tent for kids to
sleep in and fans for the clubhouse during camp days. Also, we need overnight
supervisors for A camp. Please contact Dave or Marilyn if you can help.
We really
appreciate all of the club support for Jr. Sailing.
FINAL NOTE: Jr.
Sailing has been asked to provide the continental breakfast at the Carter Open
on Sunday June 6th. Juniors please bake a dozen of your favorite muffins to
contribute to the breakfast and bring them up to the lake Sunday morning or
earlier if possible. Questions? call Marilyn or Dave.

MEMBERSHIP LOG - TODD ROGERS AND NINA SIMMERS
Welcome newest
members, Doug and Rosemary McKnight, who were already seen rounding marks
during the Columbia Cup. The McKnights
have two children, Stuart 6 and Kate, age 4.
They sail a Capri 22, named “Dindo.”
We welcome you and hope to see you on the lake often, and at member
gatherings at the clubhouse!
MENTORING PROGRAM AVAILABLE
The
mentoring program is intended to make new members feel more at home by getting
to know an older (not age) club member and having someone to turn to with
questions about the club or sailing in general. The mentors and new
members will be matched up based on the needs of the new member and the
abilities of the old member. For new members interested in racing, we'll
try to hook you up with a racer. For those interested in cruising we'll
hook you up with a cruiser. Although we really are a pretty congenial
group some new members may feel uncomfortable showing up at a social event
alone. Your mentors can help break the ice by introducing you
around. Other new members may not have a clue how to sail. Your
mentor can give you informal training so you feel comfortable handling a
boat. So here's what we need to do…
Old Members
We
welcome volunteers who would like to take a new member under their wing and
teach them the ropes. We need cruisers and racers as volunteers.
People with and without kids. So lets show our new members what kind of
spirit we have and get more volunteers than we need.
New Members
Please
contact Nina and Todd by e-mail or phone with note about your sailing interests
and experience. You do not have to participate in the
program. But it's a great way to become an integral part of the club
quickly. And at worst you'll make some new friends!
Happy Sailing
Everyone!
Thanks,
Todd Rogers
and Nina Simmers - MEMBERSHIP CO-CHAIRS
CLUB HISTORIAN LOG - JACKIE
GURLEY
LOOKING BACK AT 50 YEARS: The Clubhouse
Over the next few
months, I will look backwards from the present to the founding of the Carter
Lake Sail Club 50 years ago. In the
months ahead, I will look at racing, social events, dues and fees, committees,
and traditions.
This month: The Clubhouse
Over the years,
countless people have served as clubhouse committee. Countless refrigerators, appliances, dishes
and bric-a-brac have been donated, used and at times, discarded. Great ideas were implemented, and some were
lost over the years. This article is a
tribute to all the contributions of members to the Clubhouse, the heart of the
Club.
Ø In March, 2004, the clubhouse committee,
headed by Dale Quakenbush installed new electric breakers. The Regatta breakfast committee is excited about
the possibility of having all the coffee pots, griddles and microwaves going at
once! Junior Sail purchased a new
barbeque for the club, and Dale installed a fire wall and lock system.
Ø In 2002, major portions of the deck and
side deck were replaced and repainted.
In July, the clubhouse committee defeated the Great Ant Invasion.
Ø In 1999, club members were as in the
newsletter: “Do not leave science
experiments in the fridge!” Please take
them home each week.
Ø Larimer County hooked up water lines in
1997 to the clubhouse. They laid the
lines, restored the area with topsoil and seeding, and installed a culvert at
the base of the driveway.
Ø In 1995, work was done to level the
parking area. Thankfully, cages were
placed over the lights above the tables on the deck to keep the birds from
nesting. “We no longer have to dodge
birds nesting over the outdoor eating facilities—and the food tastes so much
better!”
Ø The deck was extended in 1992, but the
hot tub was “put on hold for the time being.”
Ø Camping regulations were developed in
1988.
Ø Vandals hit the clubhouse in 1987 with
the CB radio and liquor stolen. Members
were asked to donate nautical decorations, photos and books.
Ø A clubhouse update in the LOG declared
that the clubhouse had become the “focal point” of the club activities.
Ø In preparation for the 25th Regatta,
pluming, water tanks, fluorescent lights were installed. A dumpster was brought
in for extensive grounds cleanup.
Ø In 1983, the roof over the deck was
completed, as were the benches, the bar,
the dressing room and the volleyball court.
The flagstone patio on the back of the clubhouse was blistering hot in
the afternoon sun before the roof was completed. Pictures show lawn chairs crowded into the
slim shade of the building.
Ø Lost to vandals in 1982—the fireplace
and the vacuum.
Ø The water system was installed in 1980,
and the final plans were made for the deck, the roof and the outside bar.
Ø October, 1979 LOG mentioned plans for a
restaurant and Palm tree. No further
comments were ever found on these two topics!
Ø The flagpole was installed in 1977, as
was the road and the barbeque.
Ø The path from the dock to the clubhouse
was formed in 1973.
Ø 1960-61 ended with Commodore Bill Keiser
completing the original clubhouse structure—under the $600 budget!
Ø The United States Department of the
Interior, Bureau of Reclamation approved the plans for the clubhouse on
November 25, 1958. The Bureau stipulated
three additions to the plans: the
building needed to be put on piers and not a concrete slab due to the subsoil
conditions, a temporary roof was approved until completion, and the building
had to be completed in two years.
Ø On August 17, 1957 a hand-drawn map
indicated the club site for the Sail Club.
Ø The first outhouse was completed on
August 16, 1955. The foundation is still
visible to the south of the clubhouse.
Ø On November 30, 1954 a committee met
with Larimer County to present the proposition for the clubhouse and license
fees to demonstrate the club’s good faith.
Ø In October 1954, Otto Koehler reported
on his conversation with Mr. Bishop of the Reclamation Office and with Mr.
Howell of the Larimer County Recreation Board.
A committee of five members took the advice of the Bureau of Reclamation
representative to go to Carter Lake and “stake out a suitable club site.”
Ø May 24, 1954, “Otto Koehler reported on
Carter Lake and made the proposition to look into the matter of maybe obtaining
a plot of land and building a cabin for the club, everyone chipping in
something for the original cost.”**
**As I write this
today, May 24, 2004, this date is exactly 50 years in the past. I hope you have enjoyed this look back.

submitted,

The Spring Series
has wrapped up with a final weekend of great winds! We have already been around #4 more times
than in the past several years. A fleet
of Stars came out to visit and seemed disappointed when we postponed until the
25+ winds subsided. Thanks to those who served on RC in running a successful
series with 21 club boats and another 10 guest boats. The complete results are posted on the
website.
Columbia Cup Winner: Mike Wilson
Spring Series - PHRF A
1st- Jones
2nd- Chaloupka
3rd- Ruwitch
Spring Series - PHRF B
1st- Wilson
2nd- Miller
3rd -Stamets
4th- Lohe
Race Committee
Signup: For those signed up for RC plan to recruit your own committee of at
least two people, preferably three. We
have a few skippers who still need to sign up for RC duty to fill in the fall
schedule. I anticipate there will be the
need for many skippers to sign up for a second day to complete the season if
you haven’t already. We have a
cancellation for the Lady Victory so we will need replacements.
PHRF Handicap: We
haven’t had the minimum number of boats for any ODR fleets so plan to continue
racing in PHRF fleets with a split at 200. Any concerns with PHRF numbers may
be appealed through SAIL. Tom Ruwitch and Mike Wilson are representatives
available to CLSC members.
Summer Series
SI’s: I proposed reducing the time limit to 1.5 hr (see time limit discussion
in web forum) and addition of an arbitration rule.
CLSC Perpetual
Cups: The governing code for scoring has been revised to use the Cox-Sprague
weighted high point system. Thanks to Tom Ruwitch for his research and update
to the code.
Good luck at the
Open, Lady Victory, and Alcova!

SLIPS COMMITTEE LOG - MIKE
MORGAN
So far so good,
the water level is still coming up and the weather has not been to bad this
spring. There are a few projects that we need to take care of. There is some
Rub-Rail that needs reattached, a cleat the and a few boards need replaced.
These would make good weekday projects for someone that can't make the weekend
workdays.
Please make
sure and contact Jeff Gruver if your slip is going to be available during the
Regatta. As usual, we will be needing all of the slips that we can for the
visiting racers.
Later,
Mike

CLUBHOUSE COMMITTEE LOG
- DALE QUAKENBUSH
This is a busy
month with something happening at the clubhouse every weekend. The Carter Open
and then the Lady Victory followed by Jr. Sail Camp. I heard the guys may be in
charge of the Lady Victory potluck if no one volunteers. Then Jr sail camp with
a potluck on the 19th while the racers are in Wyo. Should be a some sort of a cruisers
feast. Then more jr sailors and the jr
sailing regatta. The last weekend will kick off the summer racing series.
Should be a great month with lots of what we all enjoy. Sailing, food, drink
and friends.
There will be a
work day on Sun, June 13, to get ready for the Jr. sailing camp. It will be at
1pm. We should be just cleaning and doing what Dave and Marilyn need.
Many thanks to all
who are helping at the work days. Remember if you need hours during the week
because you can't make the weekends, let me know and I will find something for
you to do up at the clubhouse. Mowing,
cleaning the deck, painting. There are
always things to do to keep our clubhouse sparkling.
See
you all real soon,
Dale
