Well June wasas eventful as always! The Regatta wentoff without a hitch with over 50 boats and 6 starts per race. A huge thanks to Jeff Gruver, who once againraised the amenity and registration levels for the weekend, and Tom Ruwitch for running a race with every type of boat from a huge dinghyfleet to huge multi-hull boats. There isa HUGE selection of photos available for viewing on the website as well as raceresults.
The wind forthe Regatta was little to none, but surfaced in full force the followingThursday, where it was clocked at 90 mph. For a nice visual, please go to the main page of the website(www.sailcarter.org). We had anincredible turnout from the membership, starting at midnight that Thursday through 3pm Saturday. The damage done to boats was limited due to these people and theWaldburgers (CL marina) with they’re 24 hour a day watch and immediate responsetime. All is back in place and we were back in business in 48 hours! An additional thanks to JonMiller (member), Rick Beard and Bruce Goodwin of Scuba Joes, who donated theirtime (and air) diving and checking out keels, looking for a lost cable and asunfish mast. This club neverceases to amaze me with their energy and passions and connections.
We are now into July: The summer series, Lady Victory (rescheduled),a sock hop, the infamous Hillbilly Hoe Down (with the Salty Dogs as guests), aworkday and the Junior Olympic Sailing Festival. Hopefully a bit less rain on theweekends.....
Please visitthe Junior Olympic Sailing Festival site (on the main page of our website) andthe US Sailing posters. This event isgoing to be HUGE. In case you are out ofthe loop, we will have over 60 dinghies racing at Carter for the weekend. There will be on the shore activities, massages, dinners, clinics and music.... The events will take place on shore in the North Pines area. There are boats available for kids withoutthem. Contact Ivan Andrade to lend yoursupport or register a sailor.
We will belooking at starting to finalize lease negotiations with Larimer County Parks and Open Space in July, wrapping them upand firming up the transition agreement in August. We will be providing you with notice for aSpecial Membership Meeting as soon as we have information and dates in line.

VICE COMMODORE LOG – JEFF GRUVER
Thanksagain to all the volunteers who helped to make the open regatta a greatsuccess. Thanks to the weather gods forsmiling on us considering this very wet and windy spring/summer. Only a few hearty souls showed up for theSummer Sailstice raft-up, and of course we got rained out in a big way. We'll get another raft-up going later thisseason. I still have a handful ofregatta T-shirts in small and medium long sleeve. They fit kids really well and since theregatta is over they are going for $10.00 so give me a shout if you areinterested in buying one. Take care andsee you out on the water.

TREASURER LOG - DENISE MORIARTY
Everything isgoing smoothly with the Club finances. Please remember to have receipts approved by committee heads, and thenmail them to me, with instructions for who is to receive the reimbursement, what address to send it to, and the budget line item that the expense should beposted to. This is particularlyimportant for slips and docks, as is it hard for me to tell whether the expenserelates to slips, breakwater, or dock.

SAFETY & EDUCATION LOG -ROBERT LOHE
New PFD law for children:
Effective July 1, 2004 a new law isin effect that requires children 12 and younger to wear PFD’s at all times onthe water. I contacted Larimer Cty Parkstoday and they were not able to give me any other details regarding this newlaw.
Safety Boat Seminar
This was a great success. Steve Linton of theAnchorage gave two nights of instruction, one in theclassroom and one on the water, which were the core of training for people whowanted to work on the water at the Jr. Sailing Camps. The following people attendedone or both sessions: Robert Lohe, Brian Jones, David and Marilyn Hughes, Kenand Barb Owens, Mike and Tom Ruwitch, Steve and Bev Johnson, Dale Quakenbush,Ivan Andrade, Paul Culnan and Adi Chesley, Floyd Harrison and tworepresentatives from Larimer County Parks. With this training the number ofclub members who were able to help in rescue and chase boat operationsincreased dramatically. We all felt more able to operate powerboats and toassist anyone in trouble on the water. An additional result was that JuniorSailing purchased the club three new throw bags for use on the committee boat, the whaler, and in the dock box at the courtesy dock. All Jr. Sailors at campthis year have been trained to use them.

JUNIOR SAILING LOG - DAVID& MARILYN HUGHES
Junior SailingCamp
The Junior Sailing Camps just ended and werea great success even though they sometimes felt like works in progress from oneweather moment to the next. The advanced camp had very little sailing due toentire days of foul weather. Instead of sailing we had classes on VHF use, abrief weather session, use of throw bags in rescue, towing boats, rules of theroad, race start tactics, new knots, and other related topics. On Thursday (thebest weather day of A camp) the kids sailed onkeelboats and practiced being at the helm, trimming, being towed and droppingoff a tow as well as calling other boats on the radio. The kids all felt theylearned something even though they didn't get as much time on the water as wehad hoped. Many of the A camp kids came back the next week to assist in partnersailing and knot tying with the beginning/intermediate sailors. This got the Bcamp off to a quick start and gave the A camp assistants more time on thewater. All the new B campers earned their Red Cross small boat cards and manywent away talking about buying a dinghy.
This year we had a total of 26 kids in thecamps. Twelve in A camp and 14 in B camp. Thirtyadults volunteered by instructing, lending boats, supervising, partner sailing, cooking, cleaning and helping with the Regatta. Twenty-nine kids participatedin the Regatta and everyone got a trophy. Official race results will be postedin the racing section of the web site thanks to Brian Jones who
used Sailwave to score the races.
Sail camp works because we have so many greatvolunteers from the club. Besides the instructors, Ivan Andrade, Jim Jacobs andDave Hughes, who put in lots of time before, during and after camp we hadexcellent support from others. We would like to feature our volunteers and theterrific job they did. For starters we'd like to thank Ken and Barb Owens fortaking over the major supervision for A camp. Ken alsowas in charge of the race committee for the Jr. Regatta. They both drove thedistance from Berthoud to the lake too many times to count. Helping Ken out atthe regatta were Jeanne and Stan Strathman on the committee boat, Adi Chesleyand Paul Culnan on the whaler and Brian Jones doing the scoring. Steve Undycaptained his keel boat promise as a committee boat for the B camp. ThanksSteve..sorry for the mud!
We would also like to thank Mike McMillan andhis mother Sally for buying all the food in camp and preparing a lot of it! (Bacon for breakfast yea!) Many other people helped out with food preparation: Jan Poulsen, Sallyand John Heer, Raegan and Lance Morgan, Cynthia Ropek (great popcorn!) Kathy Stamets and Paulette Kaptain. Helen Zeitlin providedenough french toast sticks for both camps. Camp food never tasted so good!
Additionally, Floyd Harrison was at bothcamps and took many nifty photos both video and still. We can't wait to seethem. Corri Connally also took digital pictures. Lots of adult partner sailors showed uprepeated days to help out the B camp: Jackie Gurley (who also lent her boat),Eileen Winans, Lana Lohe and Adi Chesley. Go lady sailors!
John McGinley gave a weather presentation tothe B camp that had all the kids identifying clouds and thinking about when toget off the lake. Lynn and Bill Kieser, Bob Carlson, Duane Chaloupka, Pip Muir ,Lana Lohe and Dale Quackenbush all lent us boats touse during camp. Stan and Shirley Connally, Dale Quakenbush, Floyd Harrison andPaulette Kaptain lent their campers, Lana Lohe for using her boat as a camperand the Owens' lent their two tents!
A huge thank you to the club members who didnight supervison (especially in the rain): Kathy Stamets, Barb Owens, PauletteKaptain, Corri Connally, Lana Lohe, Floyd Harrison, Dale Quakenbush, andShannon and Rich Tenze. A final note of thanks to the Jr. Instructors who putin countless hours working around their jobs and their busy lives: Mike Ruwitch(our knotmeister) Avana Andrade, Mackenzie Jacobs and Megan Johnson.
The Juniors put theirheads together during A camp and proposed the idea of a Junior Carter LakeSailing Club. The organization for this is in the works and more info will beavailable in the next log. Many of them are busy doing a knot tying project(nautical napkin rings) as a fundraiser for the Jr. Program. Contact MackenzieJacobs or Laura Stamets if you are interested in buying napkin rings for a goodcause! By the way, if you or your junior sailor thinkyou lost something at camp, we have a substantial lost and found at theclubhouse. (Shirts, hats, life vests, water bottles, StartSailing Right books, socks!!)
Jr. RacingSeminar
Because of the poor weather we had to cancelthe last jr. racing seminar. However, Craig Flemingbrought his dad along (who has been racing since he was a young boy) and hegave an inspired talk on how to improve race starts to the whole A camp. We areworking with Craig to reschedule and will alert all jr.racers when we have a date set. Thanks to Stan and Jeanne Strathman and JimJacobs for helping supervise the advanced jr. racingseminars.
Upcoming JuniorEvents

MEMBERSHIP LOG - TODD ROGERS AND NINA SIMMERS
No new membersthis month.
We encourage moreof our new members to partake of the mentoring program. This is a great way to get to know people andlearn more about sailing. We have no newmembers to report this month, though we will be suggesting a mentoring match aseach new application is received.
MENTORING PROGRAM AVAILABLE
Thementoring program is intended to make new members feel more at home by gettingto know an older (not age) club member and having someone to turn to withquestions about the club or sailing in general. The mentors and newmembers will be matched up based on the needs of the new member and theabilities of the old member. For new members interested in racing, we'lltry to hook you up with a racer. For those interested in cruising we'llhook you up with a cruiser. Although we really are a pretty congenialgroup some new members may feel uncomfortable showing up at a social eventalone. Your mentors can help break the ice by introducing youaround. Other new members may not have a clue how to sail. Yourmentor can give you informal training so you feel comfortable handling aboat. So here's what we need to do…
Old Members
Wewelcome volunteers who would like to take a new member under their wing andteach them the ropes. We need cruisers and racers as volunteers. People with and without kids. So letsshow our new members what kind of spirit we have and get more volunteers thanwe need.
New Members
Pleasecontact Nina and Todd by e-mail or phone with note about your sailing interestsand experience. You do not have to participate in theprogram. But it's a great way to become an integral part of the clubquickly. And at worst you'll make some new friends!
Happy SailingEveryone!
Thanks,

CLUB HISTORIAN LOG - JACKIEGURLEY
LOOKING BACK AT 50YEARS: Junior Sailing Program
Jackie Gurley,Club Historian
Last week, I hadthe pleasure of hanging around and helping a bit with the second week of theJunior Sail Camp. I came away with thesame feeling I've had for many years--If you want to teach self-reliance, teachkids to be sailors on the water! Watching Dave, Marilyn, Jim, the Junior Instructors and all the parentsand enthusiasts who were there to support the kids, I thought of looking backto the history behind the Junior Sail Camp as we know it today. This article is a tribute to all theinstructors of the Junior Sailing Program who have had the vision of teaching anew generation of sailors, but especially to Lynn Kieser, who began the programso many years ago.
In 1971:
* Lynn Kieser announced that the"Junior Racing Program" was open to "any child havingreasonable swimming ability." Theprogram was held in July and August on Wednesdays and weekends when there wasno racing.
* Lynn reported in the Fallof 1971, "The results were gratifying in that "two families who liveat Carter Lake joined the DSC because of the program, andone beginning youngster was so eager about sailing that his parents bought hima Sunfish for the next season." (Many of us have been there!)
* "Attendance varied from 6 to 14youngsters ranging in age from 9 years to 14. The program included knot-tying, rigging and vocabulary, points ofsailing, swamping and recovery in addition to sailing."
* Lee Payne, Commodore, recommended thatthe club purchase and write a charter for a "Juniortraveling trophy to be awarded yearly" at the fall banquet.
* Sue Yeager, helper, reported that"As the season progressed the competition among the Sunfishes gainedmomentum. The great thrill of winning atrophy to prove their skills certainly ought to be added incentive for a veryspirited Sunfish fleet next year."
In 1972:
* "Young members of the DSC had a veryactive summer in their Sunfish. Beginning in June with the Red Cross Small Craft School, and winding upwith the DSC Cherry Creek Invitational, these many young people enjoyed aseason of learning and racing.
* The Small Craft School, which was held at the DSC facilities at Carter Lake, was attended but (students who) receivedboth their Basic Sailing and Basic Canoeing Certificates.
* Lynn Kieser earned her Basic Sailing andSailing Instructor's Certificates.
* On Wednesdays during most of July and August, the DSC Junior Sailing Program was attended by 16 students.
In 1973:
* The Junior Sailing Program started onJune 27th, classes being held from 10:00-3:00, June, July and August. "The program is open to youngsters from8 years of age and Mothers. Availableboats will be pooled for everyone's use. There is no charge for classes, but only children of DSC members areeligible."
In 1974:
* Kristie Kieser (now a Starsailor)--Kristie Kieser-Huff) provided the attached crossword puzzle to the Junior (and other)sailors in the Club. Enjoy the puzzle, and the answers will be in next month's Log!

RACE COMMITTEE LOG - BRIAN JONES
The Club Racingseason is almost half over. Time flies by when you’re busy repairing thingsbroken on a race boat! Congratulationsto the Carter sailors for a good showing at Alcova in the PHRF and U20 fleets!(What happened to those J22 guys anyway?) What a great venue they have, if youhaven’t sailed Alcova you should go for a long weekend sometime. Had a dinner stop in Medicine Bow and metWyatt Earp at the Virginian!
The summer seriesis underway with some good sailing in-between the rainstorms. How about that 27627626Fcourse. The Sailing Instructionsare on the website and the Bayliner, note that thetime limit rule has changed slightly per the discussion forum (1.5 hours forfirst boat in fleet, +30 minutes for rest of fleet) and that an arbitrationclause has been added in case the need arises.
On Saturday July24th the start warning will be delayed two hours to 2:25 allowing for the Lady Victory to complete.
We still need RCworkdays for 5 of the 6 days if we are to have a fall series. Those skippers who have not signed up for RCneed to call or email me with your preferred dates.
In order to enticethose club members who are not currently participating inclub racing I propose consideration for a PHRF C (Cruiser) fleet, a kindof an ongoing rookie program. This fleet would be for those skippers who wouldlike to race to have fun and build skills but don't have race ready boats, crews, and perhaps lacking experience to compete with the established racers intheir slippery overdriven boats. Initialrequirements would be patterned after the rookie program, skippers who havenever trophied in a club series or open, no spinnakers, and base PHRF ratingsfrom the book. If there is interest wecould trial the fleet this summer and implement it in the fall with awards. Ifit continues into 2005 we could consider: repeating first place winner mustmove up to the more competitive fleets. Let me know if you are interested in participating in such a fleet. I will add this proposal to the websiteracing forum for further discussion.
