    EDITOR LOG - LANA LOHE

Thanks to all the ladies who participated in the Lady Victory race on June 24th.  Thanks to Walter

La Mendola, Dave Hughes, John McGinley and Bob Miller for providing RC for the race.  We had 7 boats out racing and we were able to complete 3 fun races.  Congrats to Nancy Van de Mark for winning the overall Lady Victory Cup.  Results are posted on the website.  Also thanks to everyone for purchasing your tank top even if you didn’t race. Please mail me your check if you have not done so yet. The after race party was held up at the clubhouse where we started a fire to warm up and had a great party, complete with appetizers and lots of stories.  Several women talked about wanting a Lady Victory series race next year.  With maybe a spring, summer and fall race.  Hmmm!!!!!

Can you believe it’s already August???  Sail, Sail, Sail…….

<span style='font-size:16.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size: 13.5pt;font-family:"Times New Roman"'>FROM THE COMMODORE - CARRIE PFISTER

Well!  July was quite the month, rain, rain, sleet and then the heat!  Leaving the Junior Olympic Sailing Festival on Sunday, it felt like summer was finally here and to top it off, the lake is higher than it was this spring.

I am not sure where the count wound up, but I counted 27 boats at the Junior Olympic Sailing Festival on Saturday....  a HUGE success!   We had Optis (how cute were those kids!), Lasers, Sunfish and Snipes....no wind and postponements through too much wind with abandon races. For those of you who missed it, there were clinics both on and off the water, shore side activities for non-boaters, a band.....amazing! The kids (and parents) were grinning non stop.  The press was everywhere....Loveland and Berthoud papers, the Parks and Open Space as well as a special race photographer, and tv in Estes Park. My hat of to Ivan Andrade for taking up this project last fall, and working non-stop through the event, and to the committee heads and volunteers.

August is shaping up nicely with the racers off to Dillon, the start of the Fall Series, and a few of the Specialty Races: the Rusty Nail (keep your skipper dry!) and the TransCarter (night Race).  Details are in the log.  Potlucks include Cane Carter Bay (Carribean food with palm trees glaore), Cheeseburgers in Paradise, and Mexican Night.....again, details are in the log.  We are looking forward to the end of the month with finalizing the license agreement with Larimer County.  We will be holding a Special Membership Meeting, the date has yet to be determined, but tentatively I would keep the 21st of August open.

On a personal note, I would like to thank the membership for their support for the 2004 Leukemia Cup.  CLSC had 4 registered boats (Mike Wilson, Megan Johnson, the Strathmans, and myself), three raced and all placed for trophies.  The club continues to donate quite a sum of money towards this event and it is more than appreciated.   My boat (Splash!) reclaimed the Leukemia Cup for top fundraiser with raising $8,000 for the event.  Tentative figures were at $30,000 for the weekend!  How nice is that?  This event is incredible, my crew was amazed at what happens at this regatta (now part of the SAIL tour).  If you are interested in details for next year, please ask Nina Simmers, Todd Rogers, Steve and Bev Johnson, or myself).  There is now a catagory for "Phantom Sailors" as well (sailors who wish to participate, but not bring their boat).  I have details or that if you are interested.

I also want to thank members for their patience with the County negotiations.  The Task Force continues daily (hourly?) conversations and research to ensure we are doing the best we can for the club.  I apologize for seeming a bit irritated at times....we are working very hard and non-stop, and need all the support with our requests from you that we can.  Taking this position for the 2004 year, my goal was to assure we have the best Executive Board and Negotiating Team we could to preserve CLSC, it's history and future.  We have those people in place.  Sometimes we are just plain tired and frustrated trying to keep it all going in a direction we know to be the best for CLSC.  (Yes, it has almost been 1 year!) We look forward to September.... and stress free fall sailing at the lake.  If you have questions, comments, etc...please contact Dave Lock, Mike Gurley or myself.  We will also talk to you and answer your questions.

On a final note, I know we have all been busy this summer with vacations, family etc.  Please....  participate in the activities and work days.  We are seeing a lot of the same people this year.  Some I have not seen at all, and there are new members I have yet to meet.  The fall comes quickly, and work hours will be due.  This club's strength comes from it's membership and that stems from our camaraderie.  We are one of the only club's I know of where we know each other and continue to do things together off season.  By coming to potlucks, helping with Race Committee, clubhouse and slip work days, etc., you meet members and as we have all learned, some of your best friends.  You can contact a Committee Chair with any available time you have, and we will have a project within hours.

       VICE COMMODORE LOG  JEFF GRUVER

Hello fellow sailors.  Several people have asked questions about the artist that did the painting on our open regatta shirts.  He just started a website that should answer any questions you might have.  Take a look at www.jerrymcclish.com.  I've not had any luck with schedules at work lately and have not been able to get any weekends off nor will I in August.  Therefore I will not be able to do the raft-up-movie this year but I would be more than happy to assist anyone who is willing to give it a shot.  I have the movie screen, we just need to put together a sound system and a quiet generator to power it all.  I can help with the advertising as well.  Let me know if anyone is willing to pick up the ball on one of the most popular summer events we have.  Still a few kid sized regatta shirts left at cost so give me a shout if you are interested.  See you on the water, on the weekdays that is.

 TREASURER LOG  - DENISE MORIARTY

Everything is going smoothly with the Club finances.  Please remember to have receipts approved by committee heads, and then mail them to me, with instructions for who is to receive the reimbursement, what address to send it to, and the budget line item that the expense should be posted to.  This is particularly important for slips and docks, as is it hard for me to tell whether the expense relates to slips, breakwater, or dock.

JUNIOR SAILING LOG - DAVID & MARILYN HUGHES

Junior Sailing has taken large steps forward this year and as always it is due to the willingness of members to participate. Additions this year included four main aspects.   One was having the safety and rescue boat course in June for adults who planned to help at camps and the Junior Olympic festival. This was hosted and instructed by Steve Linton of The Anchorage who was excellent in giving us core knowledge on safety and rescue boat operation.

Secondly, there was an amplified course offering in the camps including weather, VHF operation, towing boats, and use of throw bags in rescue.

The third change was in the intensity of the B camp for younger sailors. This was a direct product of the number of adults who were willing to loan boats to the program and to be partner sailors with youngsters many of whom had never sailed before.

The fourth addition was the four racing seminars for 15 to 18 year olds. The last meeting was Thursday evening July 29. Craig Fleming, a collegiate racer who works for The Anchorage, did a great job instructing. We had near perfect weather and young sailors showed large improvement in racing skill. They were a pleasure to watch on the water.

Regarding the B Camp partner sailors, we found that our ability to put kids on boats as soon as possible the first morning taught them more and elevated their level of interest in learning LOTS more than the traditional explanation first and then practice method. Fourteen accomplished sailors went out with Fourteen 10 to 12 year olds each on their own sunfish and just sailed. In the process they all had a great time and learned lots. Explanations were reserved for the afternoon after the rain rolled in. This succeeded so well that we could add more content as mentioned above.

Everyone solo sailed early in the camp and all are competent Sunfish sailors. We are pleased to have them on the water.

Thanks to following adults who partner sailed with the campers: Lana Lohe, Jackie Gurley, Eileen Winans, Adi Chesley.

Each of these areas of growth are places for club members to contribute ideas, time and effort. We have been fortunate that people have come to us to offer their services. New members may feel unsure how to engage themselves so an example may help.

Peter Blommaert and his wife Marlene, owners of the Bavarian Bakery in Boulder, are new members whose two daughters were in camp this year. Being interested in camp, they came to

visit, and decided to bake a large assortment of breakfast rolls for everyone to enjoy at breakfast the morning of the junior regatta. What a cool gift.  Thanks to everyone for being so generous.

MEMBERSHIP LOG - TODD ROGERS AND NINA SIMMERS

"Welcome to our newest member Eldred Himsworth.  Eldred raced with Tim Shoechle at the regatta and decided to join.  He will, again, be racing Tim's boat in club races.  Also we had a call from a gentleman in Wyoming who will be moving here in August and is intending on joining.  He races an International 14.  Hmmmmm... this could be interesting."

We would like to remind CLSC Members  that your required work hours must be completed within the calendar year to remain a member in good standing, which impacts slip assignments and waitlists.   For those needing hours, this is the perfect time to look at upcoming events and opportunities to volunteer some time, help the club, and complete your hours.

Happy Sailing Everyone!

CLUB HISTORIAN LOG - JACKIE GURLEY

MEMBERSHIP THOUGHTS NEEDED: Criteria for Honorary and Lifetime Memberships

Jackie Gurley, Club Historian

Since the first years of the Carter Lake Sailing Club, there have been a variety of membership categories that have changed over time. Some membership designations have included regular, associate, junior, introductory, regular slip, regular non-slip, and several non-voting "Special Memberships".  At this time, the following Special Memberships are in the Club By-Laws in addition to Corresponding and Crewing special memberships:

Annual Honorary Memberships:  "This type of membership is granted on an annual basis by the Executive Board or by the membership and pays no dues or fees.  They may use the clubhouse facilities and attend club functions, but shall not vote, hold office or be a member of the Executive Board."  The Club has not designated anyone to receive this honorary membership in many years. The last mention I found was in  the late 1970's when the Girl Scout Mariner Troop #777 and their troop Leader, Mrs. Lula Josehpson, were made Honorary Members.   Several "Honorary--Log Only" members included The Carter Lake Marina and the Larimer County Recreation Board in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

Life Memberships:  "This type of membership is granted by the Executive Board or by the membership and pays no fees or dues.  They may use the clubhouse facilities and attend club functions, but shall not vote, hold office or be a member of the Executive Board."

Only three couples have ever been designated lifetime members.

First were Otto and Emmie Koehler, who participated in the formation of the Denver Sailing Club, found and secured the Club site with the County, served as secretary and wrote the first history of the Club, and were instrumental in the development of many of the structures in the race, budget, clubhouse and social aspects of the Club.  I find mention of them as Lifetime Members in 1968.

In the 1970's, Roy and Maravene Clark were given Lifetime Membership.  Their daughter was a member of the club, and although they did not sail, they contributed many hours working in and around the clubhouse and grounds.

In 1997, as Commodore, I proposed Bill and Lynn Keiser to the E-Board for Lifetime Membership.  Bill and Lynn had been CLSC members for 40 years, Bill had been Commodore and negotiated the first written lease with the County.  He had headed the committee that had completed the clubhouse in 1962.  Lynn had initiated the first Junior Sailing Program and had coordinated and taught it for many years.  She had also served as race committee for years.  Bill continued to race in Regattas and Lynn was often seen helping at Regatta events.  They continue to attend potlucks, fall banquets and other Club events.  The E-board agreed that their "significant and on-going contribution to the CLSC" needed to be recognized with a Lifetime Membership.

Last winter, the e-board discussed developing criteria and a process for awarding the memberships.   In the early years of the club, the title of honorary or lifetime member could be "conferred upon a person by a two-thirds vote by ballot of the voting membership present at any annual meeting," but there is no criteria for who would be nominated for such an award.  The e-board would like to hear member's thoughts.

So, on behalf of the E-Board, what criteria do you feel are important to consider for these honorary memberships?  What do you think the process of awarding these memberships should be?  Please send me your thoughts, and I will take them to the E-Board for consideration.

Thanks--  Jackie Gurley

PS--Last month, several people told me the crossword puzzle did not scan very well, so I have placed several copies (with the answers, for those of you who are waiting to check your work! at the clubhouse.

RACE COMMITTEE LOG   - BRIAN JONES

The summer series is over with a total of 19 boats participating. The preliminary results:

PHRF A:  1st Chaloupka; 2nd Rampey; 3rd Scherrer

PHRF B:  1st Wilson; 2nd Miller; 3rd McKnight

A big thanks to the Star fleet and Paul Kresge for donating $100 to the CLSC race program!

August 14 - Fun racing afternoon and evening!

Noon - Rusty Nail, self start.  Bring water balloons and cannons, and lunch for a raft-up.

Dusk - Night Race, standard PHRF club rules (minimum fleet=3).  Test those nav lights first.

Fall Series:  There will be no skippers meeting and no significant changes to the existing SI’s.  The RC coverage for the fall series looks dismal with at least three days without RC.  The anticipated number of racing skippers for RC were reduced when some people doubled-up and others have schedule conflicts.  Does anyone know of a professional PRO for hire?  I had hoped to extend the season by moving the McGann Cup to October but that doesn’t look promising.

I only had one boat interested in PHRF C, so it won’t happen for 2004.  I am going to begin planning for a questionnaire for input on the race schedule format in 2005 (ie: Saturday only, Sunday only, weeknight series in summer instead of weekends, etc).

SLIPS COMMITTEE LOG - MIKE MORGAN

There is not much that needs covered about the slips this month. One item that has come to my attention is that the gates to the slips have been left open numerous times this summer. It is very important that the gates be closed behind you whenever you enter or leave the slips. It wasn't that many years ago that we had some of the boats broken into. Please keep the slips locked up at all times.

As for work hours, there is a small project that could be handled during the week. When our club was inspected by the Burough last month the only item on the slips that they came up with was the gaps between some of the boards on the North Slips. There are about three sections on the North Mains where wood should be added or boards slid down. This would make a good week day project for any members needing work hours.

Later,

Mike Morgan
