CLSC Members,
Oliver Wendell
Holmes once said, "I find the great thing in this world is not so much
where we stand, as in what direction we are moving: to reach the port of heaven, we must sail
sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it--but we must sail and not
drift, nor lie at anchor".
I found this to
be a timely quote regarding what became a year of transition in to a new
license agreement with Larimer County Parks.
While the winds were high a good portion of the year, the Task Force of
CLSC had clear direction of where we wanted to go. And while it may appear we drifted occasionally,
it was always on the same course.
Sailing on Carter Lake as long as we have, high wind became our
forte. We came to a license agreement on
August 27th and look forward to smooth sailing for our future with Larimer
County. We thank the E-Board for
appointing and entrusting the Task Force to work on their behalf. If you run in to Mike Gurley or Dave Lock,
make sure you take the time to thank them.
Summarizing with Mike, we figured we have 3 boxes of research work, well
over 2000 e-mails, and each gave 3-4 hours a week (minimum) of their time for
the past 8 months to solidify the club's future.
In August,
despite some light wind and the on going rain, we still saw a lot of activity
at Carter Lake. The turnout at the
potlucks increased and the Rusty Nail and TransCarter (night race) had the
appropriate wind and sun. The month
ended with a great Raft Up Movie Night hosted by Jeff Gruver. For those who missed it, as always, your Vice
Commodore brought the event to a new level.
This year we had no wind, a full moon, a quiet generator and surround
sound! I will say, that whether or not
you were in/on the slips or breakwater...if you were on Carter Lake Saturday,
you heard Pirates of the Caribbean... It
was incredible! Thanks for pulling that
together so quickly Jeff!
September
already???? The lake is still very full,
and now the fall winds will come....what can be better than that?
Along with the
season winding down a bit, we will start looking into elections (held at the
Fall Banquet in November), by asking you to consider whether or not you would
like to hold a position on the Executive Board next year. The bylaws (now available on line) go over
requirements needed to run for an office.
The Officer positions are done through election, and Committee Chairs
are appointed by the Commodore. I will
detail more in the October Log....but if you think you might be interested,
please contact a Board member and we can answer any questions you may have.
Here's to some
great fall wind !!

JUNIOR SAILING LOG - DAVID
& MARILYN HUGHES
Two
thousand four has been a great year for Jr. Sailing at Carter Lake. The program
has grown substantially over the last few years and we have really enjoyed watching
kids improve their sailing and have so much fun at the same time. The program
this year included beginning sailing camps, advanced sailing camps, racing
seminars, regattas, and thanks to Ivan Andrade and Tonya Dunn's work and the
club’s support, a Junior Olympic Festival.
In our opinion Carter Lake Sailing Club is stronger due to its juniors.
We
still have a few trophies to get engraved, some t-shirts to deliver to
volunteers and Red Cross Small Boat certification cards to mail. We have sent
about half the cards and are planning to get the rest off as soon as we receive
them. If anyone has a receipt that needs to be paid out of the Jr. Sailing
budget please get it to us asap. We are planning to complete the 2004 budget in
September.
Enjoy
the last days of summer and the beginning of fall sailing! Thanks again to all
the volunteers that make the Jr. Program work so well.
Note:
Don and John Waldburger have turned over the two club sunfish on the courtesy
dock to help them drain and dry out. They are still available for club members
to sail.

MEMBERSHIP LOG - TODD ROGERS AND NINA SIMMERS
While we have no
new memberships to report, we want to remind all existing members that the Work
Log is our guide for membership hours.
Please be sure to input your time spent assisting the club, whether it
be in hosting a potluck, cleaning up clubhouse, race committee, jr. sailing
programs, the
open, etc. The work log is always in the clubhouse
during the sailing season. There are
always projects to be found to complete your required hours for your membership
status before the end of the calendar year.
Keep in mind that means no later than December 31st. Most efforts to accumulate
hours this year
will be between now and end of slip removal. Please note that volunteering for
the upcoming boat show (in 2005) does not count for hours this year. Helping our club not only keeps our costs
down, but helps you become acquainted with other club members and maintains
your membership
status and
position if you are on our wait list any or all of slips, courtesy dock boat
storage and camping.
Should you find a
prospective member or sailor interested in looking at our club as a new member,
please welcome them and send them to Todd or Nina.
Happy Sailing
Everyone!

SLIPS COMMITTEE LOG - MIKE
MORGAN
I want to thank
everyone that showed up to work on the slips last Saturday. With the crew we
had we were able to make the repairs mentioned in the inspection in a little
over an hour and get some sailing in on a beautiful day. The only other project
that we will attack before pullout will be adding more floatation to the slips.
We will be adding 10 more of the encased foam floats to the breakwater before
the end of the season.
Pullout is
scheduled for the weekend of October 23rd and 24th, with alternate dates of the
30th and 31st if the weather doesn't cooperate. We will also need a crew on the
Friday before pullout to do preparation work.
Later,
Mike

GOVERNMENT LIAISON LOG
- DAVE LOCK
I am pleased to
report that Larimer County and CLSC have reached an agreement regarding the
Club's future at Carter Lake. The County
and the Club have agreed in principle to extending our license with the County
for five more years, which would take us through 2009. After a final draft is reviewed and approved
by both CLSC and the County, it will be taken to the County Commissioners for a
formal vote -- probably some time in September.
CLSC will pay the County a license fee of $10,000 in 2005, $12,500 in
2006 and $15,000 in years 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Nothing changes concerning the Club's operations at Carter Lake. We will retain our Clubhouse, our slips, the
breakwater and the courtesy dock and continue to enjoy the lake and Club as we
always have. While our license fees will
be higher in the coming years, this outcome is the very best possible one for
the Club. Only a year ago the County
began talking of plans to fold the Club into a new County-run marina facility
and possibly eliminating CLSC's slips and Clubhouse in the process. The County initially believed that plan would
create nicer amenities at Carter Lake and earn more revenues than the Club and
Carter Lake Marina produce. Early in the
negotiations with the County, it became clear that earning more money from
Carter Lake was a primary goal and that the Commissioners believed CLSC had for
too long been getting "a good deal."
The new license agreement is fair to both CLSC and the County. CLSC will continue to operate as an
independent, not-for-profit, community-focused Club and the County will earn a
license fee that more realistically reflects the benefits CLSC derives from our
faculties at the lake.

BOATS COMMITTEE LOG – STEVE
JOHNSON
As the end of the
season is approaching if you are in need of hours or you would just like to help make the club
boats look and perform better please give me call as there are many things that
need attention.
Committee boat:
1. Top sides need
washed and waxed.
2. Old Colorado registration numbers need to be
removed and new ones placed on the boat.
3. Once the rear
deck/floor is dried out it needs to be re-painted with several new coats of
gray
marine paint.
Whaler:
1. Trailer is in
desperate need of new wheel bearings/races and seals.
Blue Sunfish:
1. Any fiberglass
experts out there? We need to have a large crack in the bottom repaired and
inspection ports installed to get it dried out.
If anyone is
interested in helping to maintain the club boats and help research the current
and future boat needs of the club please give me a call.
