EDITOR LOG - LANA LOHE
It’s been really
fun these past three years putting the monthly newsletter together for you to
read. I hope you all have enjoyed
reading them as much as I’ve enjoyed sending them out. Now that I’m a grandma, I am going to step
away from the e-board position as Corresponding Secretary and spend more time
traveling to KC to watch her grow (and of course, teach her how to sail). Thanks to everyone for your kind words on how
much you’ve enjoyed reading the club’s monthly newsletter these past four
years. I know whomever takes it over
will make it even more enjoyable next season.
Here’s to a fast
and mild winter so we can get back to sailing next spring.
Thanks E-board for
sending me your log entries month after month.

Welcome to fall
sailing at Carter Lake! Just a reminder
to check your dock lines, fenders, etc. as the winds are picking up.
The log this
month has a lot of events going on.
Please take time to read through the entire log.... The Commodores Cup (for families) and McGann
Cup are coming up, along with year end potlucks, slip pull out and the Fall
Banquet.
The Fall
Banquet is not only a more formal dinner than the potluck, but a dinner to
recognize acheivements throughout the season.
It is also host to the Fall General Meeting when we hold elections for
our Executive Board (E-Board). I know
the process seems a bit confusing....so I will do my best to help you with
this. To help with this process is a
Nominating Committee. This year, the
Nominating Committee will be Jan Poulson, Ken Poulson and Jan Morgan.
The Officers of
the Executive Board are elected by the general membership at the banquet.
The positions
involved are: Commodore (requires 2 years membership in the club and prior
service on the E-Board), Vice Commodore, Treasurer, Recording Secretary and
Corresponding Secretary. If you are
interested in any of these positions, please contact a Nominating Committee
Member.
The Committee
will nominate one willing member for each position to be filled. Any Regular Member in good standing who
wishes to run for office may submit their name to the Nominating Committee
before it meets on November 2nd, accompanied by a petition signed by ten (10)
Regular Memberships (one signature per membership). This name shall be reported as nominated at
the meeting along with the Nominee selected
by the Committee. If a vote is
required, ballots will be issued and tallied.
The Board is
also comprised of Committee Chairmen which are appointed (not elected) by the
Commodore. The Committees are: Education
and Safety, Membership, Social, Racing, Clubhouse and Grounds,
Slips/Breakwater/Docks, Boats, Junior Sailing, Government Laison, Web Master
and Historian. Details of each job are
in the bylaws that you received this year, and on line
(www.sailcarter.org). It became more
than apparent this year how diverse and knowledgeable each person is. If you are interested in holding one of these
positions or learning more about what it entails, please contact a Board
Member. We will forward the names to candidates for the 2005 Commodore
position. Appointments will be announced
at the Fall Meeting as well.
We will be
issuing a mailer that will address the Fall activites, along with the agenda
for the meeting. Watch your
mailboxes....
Have a great
fall, and see you on the water!

JUNIOR SAILING LOG - DAVID
& MARILYN HUGHES
October
is our last month of sailing on Carter. On warm days it is still great to take
out a dinghy and have some fun. At dock pull out on Sept 23rd we would like
help putting away the club sunfish and getting all the sails and spars out of
the dock box. Please plan to pull your sunfish from the racks as well as your
keel boat.
The
last four years have been great for us. We have enjoyed working with kids in
camp and on the water. There is nothing
like watching and interacting with kids as they improve their sailing. All the
volunteers have been terrific and it is a credit to the club that the junior
program has grown so much. We will
still be involved as volunteers but new co-chairs will be taking over the mainsheet!
Next year¹s program may have some
innovations. A day camp for the advanced kids is being considered instead of
overnights. Then the recommended age limit might be extended to include older
kids. If there is interest the racing seminars may repeat. Craig has expressed
interest in following up if possible. The beginning to intermediate class will
probably still be an overnight camp. Late June and early July will be the best
bets for camp dates. Later in June we may be able to avoid some of the rain
that occurred this year. Changes in the curriculum to attract more advanced
sailors as well as inspire younger more novice students are being considered.
Registration forms will be on the web site for the junior program in early
spring. Costs will be dependent on the type of program developed by the new
co-chairs.

MEMBERSHIP LOG - TODD ROGERS AND NINA SIMMERS
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE URGES NEW MEMBERS,
SLIP HOLDING MEMBERS AND MEMBERS ON WAIT LISTS FOR SLIP, SUNFISH STORAGE AND/OR
CAMPING TO READ THIS REMINDER:
Members are
encouraged to complete the Work Log with their volunteer hours spent helping
the CLSC. Great fall sailing weather
and our upcoming social events present perfect opportunities to come to the
lake and while there, PLEASE make a stop up at the clubhouse and record the
hours you have already volunteered for the sail club.
If you are short,
now is the time to get involved! Any one
with questions about hours needed before year end is encouraged to review the
Membership application each of us has signed (a copy resides on our website
main page) - or ask any Board Member if in doubt about what is required of your
type of membership.
Any member who is
short of hours is urged to become involved as soon as possible with an upcoming
event to finish hours needed. Reading this entire Newletter may present
some ideas to help you in that regard! Please do not wait till slips are pulled to
realize you are short. This is
especially crucial for members on wait lists and those who have a slip already
assigned. This may sound repetitive -
but please know that we have a long wait list of members awaiting slips. Anyone not completing their required hours
before December 31st will unfortunately be removed from the wait lists, which
would be regrettable, considering we have a signed lease and a secure sailing
season ahead in 2005!
If anyone has
questions or concerns, please contact us soon.
Thanks!

CLUB HISTORIAN LOG - JACKIE
GURLEY
Even a
dedicated--and usually wordy--Club Historian hits a dry spell. What to write about--more about the
clubhouse, or perhaps the history of trophies or racing, or a recap of the
stresses of the last year??
Then this morning
in the shower (no kidding) it came to me that we are missing first-hand history
of some of the most memorable characters to have joined and influenced our
culture and development as a club.
For unknown
reasons, I was thinking of the first time Mike and I drove to Carter Lake. We knew nothing about sailing and did not
have a boat, but we were fascinated. We
stood in the upper parking lot, in awe of the beauty of a lake filled with
white sails. Up the stairs came a jolly,
heavy-set man who introduced himself, welcomed us to Carter Lake, and
encouraged us to go down to the docks, where he said people were ALWAYS eager
to talk about boats and sailing. We were
hesitant and didn't take him up on the offer, but we remembered the welcome
when we bought our boat soon after and joined the Carter Lake Sail Club. Jim Nance was our official welcome into the
club, and it was not surprising to us when the Club dedicated a "Spirit
Award" in Jim Nance's name.
So, my challenge
is two-fold this month:
First, what other
stories and anecdotes do you have about Jim Nance and his impact on the
CLSC? Let me record them to honor his
memory and share with members who never had the opportunity to know him.
And, what other
"memorable characters" do we need to remember through story and
anecdote?
I look forward to
your e-mails, letters, or phone calls.
Jackie
Gurley

SLIPS COMMITTEE LOG - MIKE
MORGAN
Well,
it's sad to say but the sailing season is about over and it's time to plan for
Pullout.
Pullout
is scheduled for the weekend of October 23rd and 24th. If the weather doesn't
cooperate we will have the following weekend as a fallback.
I
will also need a crew of volunteers to meet at the lake on the Friday afternoon
before Pullout (October 22nd) to do prep work. We move the slips down closer to
the North ramp and get things ready for the next day.
All
boats need to be out of their slips by Thursday, the 21st of October.
The
encased foam floats I have ordered for the Breakwater have been backordered. If
they come in before Pullout we will need some volunteers to install them.
For
your schedules Put-In for next year should be on the last weekend of March. You
can also plan on having a workday for slip repair the 1st or 2nd weekend of
March.
Later,
Mike
Morgan

GOVERNMENT LIAISON LOG
- DAVE LOCK
As most folks probably
know, the Larimer County Commissioners approved a 5-year extension to CLSC's
license. The extension begins Jan. 1,
2005 and will be automatically renewed through Dec. 31st, 2009. The license terms are essentially the same as
they have been, although CLSC will have to pay higher license fees beginning
next year. Payments will be $10,000 in
2005; $12,000 in 2006; and $15,000 in 2007-2009. While no one wants to pay increased dues and
slip fees, the license extension is the best outcome that we were able to
negotiate over a very arduous year.
Thankfully, the County's plans hatched last year - to take over CLSC and
the marina - didn't come to fruition and the Club can continue to operate as it
traditionally has...we all will have to pay a little more, however. Members with questions about the license
extension can talk with Carrie Pfister, Mike Gurley or Dave Lock.

BOATS COMMITTEE LOG – STEVE
JOHNSON
As the end of the
season is approaching if you are in need of hours or you would just like to
help make the club boats look and perform better please give me call as there
are many things that need attention.
Committee boat:
1. Top sides need
washed and waxed.
2. Old Colorado registration numbers need to be
removed and new ones placed on the boat.
3. Once the rear
deck/floor is dried out it needs to be re-painted with several new coats of
gray
marine paint.
Whaler:
1. Trailer is in
desperate need of new wheel bearings/races and seals.
Blue Sunfish:
1. Any fiberglass
experts out there? We need to have a large crack in the bottom repaired and
inspection ports installed to get it dried out.
If anyone is
interested in helping to maintain the club boats and help research the current
and future boat needs of the club please give me a call or email.
