    EDITOR LOG - LANA LOHE

I was searching for a nice quotation for my last CLSC Newsletter and came across this one.

It was perfect.  When you read it, stop and think about what the club has been through these past two years with the County and where we are today.   Congrat’s to the Task Force for working hard to keep our sailing, clubhouse, racing and most important our Camaraderie alive.  No one can ever take that away.!!!

“A young sailor at sea was ordered to climb a mast to adjust a sail during a violent storm.  He got halfway up, looked down, got dizzy and sick.  An old sailor on deck shouted up to him, Look up son, look up.  The young sailor looked up, regained his composure, and completed his mission.”

Moral of the story: “Look ahead, not back”

Let’s hope winter is quick and brings us some good moisture so we can sail a full season next year.

Cheers,

Lana Lohe

Well, here we are again, the boats and slips are out... and the Banquet is just around the corner.  For new members...it is more of a formal event than the potlucks (usually suits and some tuxes).  Shannan has planned a great dinner, and it will be followed by the Fall General Membership Meeting including awards honoring accomplishments for the year.  If you are interested in working  or heading any committees, please call me ASAP.  At this time, we still have Social and Race Committees with no prospects...

I would like to thank everyone for their help and dedication in making this sailing club the most successful club in the state.  When I look back over the past 2 years in this office, we have added so much. To name a few: our website and newsletter have gone to new levels and become interactive, the clubhouse has received a new refrigerator, grill and a great paint job.  Junior Sailing has grown so much it has been split into 3 different levels, and the courtesy dock has expanded.  Raft Up Movie night went to surround sound, we hosted a 5 state area for the Junior Olympic Festival, and had a more than successful regatta which added prints and "regatta wear" into the mix.

The largest change that happened over the past year and became apparent at slip pull out....is that the club realized what we have at Carter Lake and what we bring to the table to make it happen.  It was just over a year ago, where our existence was in jeopardy.
Larimer County proposed a county run marina facility which would have eliminated our assets.  We held tight, negotiated in good faith, and received incredible press that showed the county our involvement in the community.  Our work days and incredible levels of knowledge were addressed by both the Larimer County Commissioners and the Parks Department.  This is what makes us different.  They are how we met our friends, instructors, spouses....   We have always been a club with a "can do" attitude.  People and groups give us tasks and opportunities.  We take them and run with the ideas. The outcome is always incredible.  I can't thank you enough for that.  What we put in to this club is what comes out of it.

Please take time to read through the log, see what has been accomplished during the year, and keep an eye on the log in the "off season".  There are always things going on...the Boat Show, movie nights, tell a tall sail-tale nights....etc.

The $1 tickets for the boat show are not here yet.  I will take reservations for them, and bring them to the Fall Banquet if I have them.  I am also bringing the final call box for the lost and found.  I have hats, windsocks, coolers, cooler-cups, toiletries, lifejackets, towels, shoes, disposable cameras. Not coming to the banquet?  Call me to locate your items. Anything not claimed will become a charitable donation on behalf of the club the following week.  I also will have Junior Olympic shirts, Lady Victory Shirts and a few small regatta shirts.

It has been my pleasure holding the position of Commodore for the past 2 years.  Please welcome your new Executive Board after elections and call them to volunteer your knowledge and help.  The 2005 year will be here sooner than you think, and be busier than ever.

       VICE COMMODORE LOG  JEFF GRUVER

Another sailing season is behind us.  Since I've gotten into sailing I found that winter is far less enjoyable than it used to be.  Looking back it was a pretty good season.  The Carter Open regatta which was my biggest task, was a great success due to an unending supply of talented volunteers and great luck with weather.  My other main task, assisting Carrie, wasn't nearly as successful as my job has gone through changes that don't allow me to be home very often, especially on weekends.  It's only going to get worse.  I wish I would have had more time to sail and to participate in the pot-lucks and get to know some of our newer members better.  The political battles that Carrie and Co. have fought over the last two seasons have drained us all but we are in a far better place than I would have anticipated.  Hopefully next season will bless us with good water, good wind, and a welcome relief from politics.  I hope to see you all at the fall banquet and I look forward to seeing you all out on the lake next season.

 TREASURER LOG  -   DENISE MORIARTY

Well, we've made it through another year, and what a year it's been!  The club is in good shape financially, with the final bond payment going out this week.  Thanks to the efforts of many people, and a certain few in particular, the costs related to the fight with the county have been minimal.  What a relief to be able to move forward into the next few years without that hanging over our heads.

I'm looking forward to the simple joys of sailing, but I would like to encourage you all to get involved in the workings of the club.  It takes everyone to keep it moving, and the best way to get involved and claim some "ownership" in the organization is to jump in, and be part of the decision-making.  You will get out of it what you put into it, and that is never truer than at Carter Lake.

Have a great winter, and for all our sakes, may it be short and mild!

JUNIOR SAILING LOG - DAVID & MARILYN HUGHES

Happily, there will be a Junior Sailing program again next year. We are inviting junior sailors, their families, and other interested members to come to the Fall Banquet at 5:00 P.M. to give their input. We hope for improvements and refinements to meet everyone's needs and interests. Ken and Barb Owens will be there as well to exchange ideas with the group. If you have thoughts about the program but won't be at the banquet, please email us.

Several members have requested information as to their status on the slip wait list. The table below shows the positions for each of the members and their work hour status.  Based on this information, it is likely that there will be some changes in the slip wait list after January 1.  However, members do have until then to get their work hours in.

RACE COMMITTEE LOG   - BRIAN JONES

A big thanks to all who served on RC this year to make this one of the best club race programs in the region!

Thanks also to respondents of the race program survey. I will have forms at the fall banquet for anyone who would still like to provide their input.  The results will be compiled for input to the 2005 season.

What happened to those fall series winds this year? Light and variable seemed to be the rule once again.  Some good racing though, the winner of the A fleet wasn’t determined until the 12th and final race of the series.
